About Robin and Troy Suntheimer

Troy and Robin - Troy and I have lived in Newport News, VA for 18 years. Troy owns his own construction business and I retired from the Navy in 2012 after 29 years of service. We have a son in the Navy and our daughter works for an outdoor recreation company.

Robin and Troy Suntheimer purchased this lodge in 2013

Why Robin and Troy Suntheimer chose Independence

In Oct 2013, Troy and I traveled to Gatlinburg, TN and fell in love with the mountain views and cabin life and decided to find a cabin of our own. We found a cabin in Grayson County for sale and we contacted a realtor. We immediately felt at home in Independence and fell in love with our vacation home, the mountain it sits on, the area and the people. I think you will love it just as much as we do. We closed on 20 Dec 2013 and have been up there 5 times since.

What makes this lodge unique

When we first saw this lodge (cabin just doesn't do it justice) we noticed the numerous windows and the beautiful stain. We walked the deck which wraps around all but one side of the lodge and couldn't get enough of the million dollar view. We knew this was the place for us and hadn't even been inside. With the large master bedroom with its own deck, the loft with the amazing views, the high end appliances, single car garage, wet bar and 22 acres we were hooked. The other two bedrooms are cozy and private. The finished basement isn't like most, as it has several windows and french doors that lead out onto the patio. While sitting in the hot tub you can watch the sunset over the mountains which is spectacular. The wood stove keeps the basement very warm and if you open a window, the wood stove will heat the main floor. The living room has a beautiful stone fireplace, high ceilings and a mountain view. There isn't a room in the lodge that isn't cozy and comfortable. If you come to our home, you won't want to leave.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

After a section hike on the Appalachian Trail that ended in Damascus, we chose the Black Bear Lodge to stay and enjoy the local area. The cabin is absolutely beautiful with amenities that no others could touch(volleyball net, fire pit, and range). Every attention to detail throughout the cabin was well thought out and top notch! It was super clean and well stocked. The owners were super helpful and we can't wait to go back.

I highly recommend this cabin and biking the Virginia Creeper Trail on your stay at this beautiful part of Virginia.

Perfect stay, beautiful home, great location

  • 5 of 5

We (two couples on a romantic getaway) spent the weekend at Black Bear Lodge and had a wonderful stay. The home is beautiful and the owners supplied everything that was on their list. The property looked just like the pictures and the views were breath-taking. There is so much to do at the cabin and the surrounding area provides a lot of outdoor activities. We look forward to visiting Black Bear Lodge again.

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I needed to get away, so I went to look for a cabin in the woods. Stumbled across VRBO and Black Bear Lodge. Owners very accommodating. All the gadgets/devices to enjoy movies/internet with all the beautiful views to draw you outside. Modern kitchen with many staples, spices stocked. Be willing to cook most meals at home. Not many dining options, other than fast food, in Independence or Galax. Easy access to Grayson Highlands Park with fairly easy hiking there. Had beautiful weather for March. Would return later in the spring to be able to view all the rhododendrons on the property and in the area. Some trails on the property, but limited. Open space with volleyball and fire pit.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words. We are constantly trying to improve our guests experience so each time we are at the lodge, we try and work on more trails. I wish I had known about you searching for good restaurants as there some listed in the binder at the lodge. The Galax Smokehouse has wonderful BBQ, Bogeys is a great restaurant at one of the public golf courses in Galax and there is a Mexican restaurant right next to Morton's Reality in Independence that has very good food, large portions and not expensive. I encourage all guests to please read through the binder at the lodge and the welcome package as these restaurants are listed in the back with phone numbers and addresses. Thank you again for letting us know so we could share this information with our guests. Robin

We truly enjoyed our time at black bear lodge...The excitement began as we drove up to the lodge which was even more beautiful seeing it in person...It actually proved to be much more than we had expected...Our goal was to "hibernate"..and just relax...no better place , than the lodge..Plenty of firewood for our romantic evenings by the fire...The hot tub with its grand views, the relaxing spa tub with the Jets , so invigorating. ..and it was a pleasure to prepare meals in the lovely designed kitchen. .It was equipped with all we needed..We look forward to visiting again soon....Thanks for an awesome vacation. ..

Wow!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Black Bear Lodge was outstanding. Our family used the entire property, from the shooting range to the firepit. We ate lunch on the firepit everyday and couldn't have enjoyed it any more than we did. The kids are already asking to go back. They spent the time building a fort just beyond the shooting range, so if you find it, enjoy!!!! The owners went above and beyond with customer service. Fantastic. Can't wait to come back!!!

Great Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and two other couples recently stayed at the Black Bear Lodge and had a fabulous time. The lodge is a beautiful, well maintained home with all the amenities you need. The kitchen provided more than we needed to prepare great meals, there is plenty of space to enjoy time together but also private space and the view is fantastic. We enjoyed the hot tub, darts and staying close to the coziness of the wood stove while watching it snow. We definitely plan to return!
