RUSTIC ELEGANCE IN SERENE SECLUSION WITH PLENTY TO DO AND SEE

Hunt House Rental Photos and Description

Newly Renovated And Refurnished 3 Bedroom 3 Bath Creekside Residence

Rustic Elegance in Serene Seclusion with plenty to do and see. All very well furnished with more than you would expect to find in a five star hotel. Not just clean sheets soap and towels, but a kitchen pantry with and utensils that you would find in your own home. Just bring groceries and enjoy life. If you do not find what you need, just ask the owners and they can probably fill your request.

Outside we have a fire ring on solid rock alongside the creek with plenty of fire wood. There is plenty of seating on the patio as well as Lazy Boy comfort on the deck. Naps anyone? Or just read from our large library or chat and listen to the waterfall and watch the children play in the creek.

The Creek House has recently been renovated and decorated in the Western Style. It has three bedrooms each with its own bath. Two are located at opposite ends of the living area. The master bedroom has a King Size bed and the other bedroom features a Queen size Sleep Number bed, each have easy chairs and ample storage and closets.

The private Studio suite is just across a carport and has a queen size Sleep Number bed and a set of bunk beds. Kids of all ages will love this hideaway setup.

The spacious living/dining area has a rustic fireplace built of stones which were gathered off the ranch and there is plenty of firewood and comfortable seating. The dining table seats eight easily. and there is a four place round table just across the room that the kids may prefer.

There is a spacious shaded deck that overlooks the creek with a walkover bridge in a stone dam that backs up a small lake which flows out in a stepped waterfall. On the deck there is a gas brazer for outdoor cooking as well as a table and a number of chairs. There is a large flag stoned creek side patio with a table and chairs right alongside the stream.

The ranch is our yard. We have 1200 acres that include woods and meadows and cliffs and canyons, a rock strewn spring fed stream with a number of lakes to explore. Animals abound and bird watching is one of our favorite sports. The hunting blinds are fed year around and just sitting in one of them in the evening and watching the deer of several species come feed is a rare treat. The wild turkeys roam at will and in the early spring they put on a real show.

We have hunters that occupy our Lodge, which is a quarter of a mile upstream. They are here mostly on long weekends in November and December. They also come up to just visit and tend the feeders at a dozen blinds about every six to eight weeks. They are just like part of our family.

There is a first class shooting range where visitors can sight in their guns or just try their hand at pistol, rifle or shotgun skills. We do not encourage plinking around in the pastures.

The naturally stocked lakes and ponds yield up plenty of fish. Black bass are put back if they are under 11 inches or over 15 inches. We are sure that many of the over 20 inch long bass have been caught a number of times. Eat all of the mid-sized bass, catfish and bluegills you are skilled enough to catch.

This is a hiking and bird watching enthusiasts delight. Don't forget to bring your cameras. You will want to take lots of pictures.

If you have time and the inclination, there are looping drives that you can take through the Hill Country back-roads and along the North and South forks of the Guadalupe River. Each little town has its share of unique eating places. In the spring wild flowers abound.

Shoppers love to explore quaint old Fredericksburg which is less than an hour away.

The land that is now Riachuelo Ranch was first settled by the Byas family thus Byas Springs and Byas Branch. We are told that their homestead porch rested on the rock walls that enclose the spring by the Lodge. There are still traces of midden rock in the area that attest to the fact that this spot was once an Indian tribes kitchen. The land has been passed down through many hands before ours.

In 1988 Bernard ended a five year Odyssey of sailing the high seas and came home to the Hill Country of Texas. He purchased parcels of land over the next three years totaling a little over 1,200 acres. A wild fire roared through the area around 1965. Where this fire swept, a swath of half burned cedar with a thick regrowth of sumac and cactus evolved. The rest of the land was covered with cedar and more cactus.

The next ten years were spent first studying what was to be done with this tangle of unproductive and mostly impenetrable land and then clearing the land in a premeditated sculpture leaving enough cedar brush for the wildlife to have cover and habitat and enough open space to grow the grass and leafy plants to feed them plus some domestic animals.

Over the years a hunting lodge and two very nice homes were built, one by the creek and one on top of a high bluff overlooking several lakes. Limestone cliffs give birth to natural springs that are the source that feeds the lakes and three thousand feet of lovely shaded stream through the ranch. Byas Branch flows on beyond our place into Johnson Creek and on to the Guadalupe River.

The property is divided into seven pastures designed to accommodate the handling of livestock. Over the years we have had sheep, horses and cattle but now we confine our livestock efforts to the raising of a clean line of badger faced black Spanish goats that are sold mostly to ethnic markets for their meat.

There is a horse ring, corral and tack room where guests can keep their horses between long rides through miles of woods and meadowland and be with nature to their hearts content. Then there are many who will just enjoy just hiking.

A major portion of a lifetime has been devoted to making this into a place of natural beauty and now we want to share it with you. Help us by picking up every scrap of man's litter that you may come across, and be sure that you leave nothing behind.

Enjoy every minute of your stay.

About Rosalie Syfan

Bernard's family came to the Hill Country for vacations and weekends since his parents came here on their honeymoon in 1915 via train and buggy. He likes to say that he has been coming to the hills since before he was born and has spent the best part of his life here.

When he got out of business in California and came home from sailing for five years of sailing from Seattle to Turkey and back to the US it was to 'the hills' where his heart had always resided.

All of his family was here and his roving the world was put aside. He decided to settle down and be a rancher.

Bernard's grandfather established the first vacation subdivision in Kerr County on the Guadalupe river and his parents had their honeymoon there in 1915 after a three day train and buggy ride to 'the hills' as we always called it.

Bernard likes to say that he has been coming to the hills since before he was born which was in 1926. After a stint in the navy he graduated from Texas A&M with a BS in Civil Engineering, He worked as an engineer, builder and developer until 1983 when he went sailing on his five year Odyssey. When he came 'home' it was to 'the hills' where his heart had always resided.

Rosalie grew up in California & Oregon. In Beaverton, OR she took classes in appreciation of literature, worked as a hairdresser & taught dancing. She lived in the Los Angeles area for 42 yrs. Rosalie was president of the Hidden Hills Community Theater for four years and was instrumental in starting their children's theater program. She is a past president of the Valley Chapter of Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, which raises seed money for cancer research at UCLA. She took classes at a local college & made the Deans list for three years. She also had a jewelry business for 20 yrs. In 2005 she moved to Kerrville, Texas where she met & married Bernard 2013. Her most recent accomplishment was publishing her book 'Destruction of Innocence', a memoir by Rosalie Hollingsworth is a must read.

Rosalie Syfan purchased this house in 1986

Why Rosalie Syfan chose Hunt

Bernard picked this particular property because of its character, uniqueness and potential for conversion from a brush and cactus tangled old ranch into a self supporting, productive and park-like place of serene beauty.

The naturally stocked lakes and ponds yield up plenty of fish. Black bass are put back if they are under 11' or over 15'. We are sure that many of the over 20' bass have been caught a number of times.

What makes this house unique

When you stay with us at our Creek House, you will experience living in a house that has all of the comforts of rustic elegance, but you will be in an atmosphere of quit serenity surrounded by nature where you can pick up a book or stroll along the creek or hike over miles of ranch roads. You can sit on the shaded deck and enjoy listening to the little waterfalls, or you can just be together with ones that you love in a place that you will never forget.

Rustic Elegance was the best VRBO rental we've ever rented!

Rustic Elegance was the best VRBO rental we've ever rented!

We very much enjoyed our stay at Rustic Elegance and highly recommend it. From the name "Rustic", you can tell this is not the W or a 5 star hotel; if you want room service and daily massages then this is probably not the place for you. But if you want a secluded, peaceful stay in the Hill Country with superior accommodations, great views, a peaceful waterfall from the creek off the back porch, tons of deer, fishing, hiking, first class interior furnishings and appointments and a terrific friendly host & hostess in Bernard & Rosalie, then this may be just the place for you. They have a wonderful 1200 acres to get lost in, and the Creek House (and for that matter, the Hunting Lodge) give you all the privacy you could possibly need. The Creek House has a separate standalone suite with a queen size bed (I think), a bunk bed and it's own full bathroom; perfect for kids who want to get away or a couple who want their own space. The main house has two master bedrooms. The main living room den is spacious and well appointed. We have rented VRBO houses from Florida to California to Hawaii to Vieques, PR and we've never had a house as well appointed as this house (from everything to the welcome basket to the furnishings). Everything Bernard and Rosalie supply is first class, from the Select Comfort Bed to the cover for the gas grill on the back porch (yes, as a grilling aficionado, I noticed). Bernard is constantly making improvements to the property and has plans to construct a spring fed swimming pool in the next year (there is already a spring fed wading pool behind the hunter's lodge). My only regret is that Bernard & Rosalie haven't adopted me so I could possibly inherit this beautiful property some day. Stay here and you will not be disappointed (or if you are, then you just can't be pleased or should have stayed at the W with room service). I give it 5 solid stars. Can't say enough good things about it. Kudos to Bernard & Rosalie.

Owner's Response: What can we say? With happy guests like these, we just can not say, or do, enough. It is a pleasure to do everything within our power to make our guests bubble with excitement about every aspect of their stay.
Their son had an exceptionally good time as anyone can see by the grin on this fisherman's face in a photo that his mother sent us. That one will end up on in our website gallery.
And yes, we have started work on a 40' x 50' spring fed swimming pool which will be about 5 feet deep. It will have a natural stone bottom and one side will be nestled against a solid rock cliff. The plan is to have stone masonry under water seating built on the cliff as it transitions to the bottom. The other side we will have a wood deck with seating and the end will hopefully step out onto a little sand beach. We plan to have a ten foot infinity opening at the new down stream corner where the creek will exit the pool and fall about five feet to the solid rock creek bed and on its way down to the Creek House pond.
There will be auto parking on the upstream end of the pool and a walking path from the Creek House along the creek up to the new pool.
Everyone that sees the site is excited about the prospects of a natural spring fed pool which we plan to be an extension of the Rustic Elegance at the Creek House below and the Lodge just across the way.

Top notch!

From the time we arrived it was first class attention from Bernard all the way! We stayed at the lodge, but also hung out at the beautiful creek house w the rest of our family who had rented it out. Both properties were fantastic and the attention to detail was appreciated. We strongly recommend this and plan on coming back! Thanks for sharing your stories Bernard!

Owner's Response: Another wonderful and interesting family group. When I dropped in the day after their arrival to check to see if they had everything that they needed, I was ushered into the house where I spent a most delightful hour chatting and answering questions about the ranch, the goats and my five year sea voyage. It seems that they had read my profile in the listing.
The doctor concluded that what I had done was about everything that he dreamed of doing. His father had wanted him to be a civil engineer, he dreams of sailing away on an extended voyage and this ranch would be the answer to his fondest prayers.
It is so nice to have such friendly happy and appreciative guests. They spilled out over both the Creek House and the Lodge. The spring fed masonry lined and bottomed wading pool at the Lodge seemed to be the favorite for the young mother and her children every day. They built a big fire in the fire ring and were up late in the evenings on the deck enjoying the ripple of a small waterfall and the lingering fire.

The main body of adults spent a lot of time on the shaded deck overlooking the creek at the Creek House with its waterfall and pond. There were always running conversations among the adults flowing through the house and out onto the deck. This house and its location is truly a treasure and it is certainly gratifying to have it enjoyed so.

Found our Hill Country Happy Place

  • 5 of 5
Two families. Four adults and four children on this trip and we ALL loved our stay in the Creek House! I tend to go in with low expectations when renting and hope for more than I expect. This place definitely exceeded our expectations. Beautiful ranch. The house was darling, clean and had everything we needed. Including a fantastic covered back porch from where we were able to sit and watch our children play in the creek below. They spent hours playing (catching frogs and tadpoles) in the shallow water just below the dam. The homeowners were more than accommodating. They provided a welcome basket with all kinds of goodies for both adults and children and promptly mailed me back a hanging bag that I had accidentally left in the closet. Two bedrooms in the main house. Master with king and large bathroom. Laundry room off of the Master. Second bedroom with queen and it's own full bath. The children slept in the detached "bunkroom", which is just steps from the front door on the other side of the carport. The bunkroom had a queen, a set of bunk beds (sleeps 4), and a full bath. It was also very clean and cute.
The ranch is about 11 miles from Ingram where there is a small grocery and liquor store just as you get to town. We were able to find what we needed there. But there is also a Walmart in Kerrville which is not much further.
I highly recommend this place! We will definitely rent here again in the future.

Owner's Response: What great guests we have. We started renting out the two extra houses on the ranch and find that it is a real pleasure to meet such fine people and to share this little bit of Heaven with young families, family gatherings, groups of young ladies, and the like.
The diversity of interests is invigorating. Some shoot others fish or walk or run or splash around in the creek. Very few leave the ranch to do anything but buy groceries.

Come join us, bring groceries and enjoy life.

Amazing Place, Highly Recommended!

  • 5 of 5
Pictures don't do this place justice. A beautiful, charming creek house situated on a 1100 acres ranch. You pretty much have all the ranch to yourself! Swimming, fishing, target shooting, great library with carefully selected books. This place has it all. Very clean and well maintained. Beautiful furniture.
Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: We seem to be getting the cream of the crop. People who understand the land and how carefully it has been sculpted and maintained while keeping and enhancing what it has to offer in natural beauty.
We do our best to be sure that no one sees anything that was not put there by nature or by our loving hands.
The fishing in our lakes has something for everyone. Perch that go after worms, grass hoppers, and frogs really keep the youngsters hoping. Try for catfish that lurk slow and low, and the large mouth bass that show enough fight to get Dad's blood flowing.
Walking in the evenings along the creek-road between the houses in the late evening and watching the firefly show has become an every party activity. Also that is the time when the deer amble out to visit the feeder alongside the creek.
We ask for suggestions as to where we can make things even better and we do our best to fill every suggested addition from new seating to fire rings at the creek to stuff in the kitchen, or better recycle and trash systems. Thank you all.
People keep telling us that we should let potential guests know just how completely furnished and equipped our houses are. One can just bring themselves and groceries. The rest is in the house or we can come up with what they need.
Everyone looks forward to the next trip. One couples youngsters were crying as they left. They didn't want to go home. Now that is a problem we can address, just come back.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5
I had rented out the Syfan's home during the memorial weekend. The home is located on a beautiful ranch. We did not have anybody bother us and felt at home. The house was very clean and has everything you could need except for your clothes. We had a large party, and the Syfans went to extra lengths to ensure we were comfortable (which we were!). Also the ponds are excellent for fishing. They have stocked bass. I highly recommend if you want to teach a young child fishing this is a great opportunity. My 2 year old thoroughly enjoyed it. The bass were biting hard on a pumpkin black flake worm rigged weightless. We also visited their goats, explored their property, built camp-fires, grilled everyday, and watched the stars at night. I would highly recommend their rental place, and we can't wait to visit it again.

Owner's Response: What a pleasure it is to have great families come and enjoy our home and ranch. They say that Texas is privately owned and jealously guarded and for the most part that is true. We feel like we have the very best of it here and do so enjoy sharing it this way with people that really appreciate its natural beauty and quiet serenity.

Hill Country Happy!

  • 5 of 5
We went on a girls trip/art retreat and we had a wonderful time! We enjoyed the beautiful river, peaceful porch, great walks and birds watching, (so many funny wild turkey)! We cooked, drank wine, watched movies, but spent most of our time painting; we each came away with a really good painting. This is a happy, Hill Country place!

Owner's Response: You girls are something else. More people should do getaways like you had and we are proud that we have such a treasure to share with others.

We sincerely hope that you will return with your group or why not throw in individually and share the unique pleasure of a quiet few days in this jewel of the Hill Country with your families?

We think that once you see this park-like 1200 acre Ranch with its canyons, lakes and streams and the Western opulence of natural beauty, you will want to stay right here and enjoy a quite relaxing visit with nature and plenty of things to experience within walking distance.

We offer a big sky view of the stars as you roam the ranch in the evening or just relax and enjoy the beauty at hand.

If you have horses, bring them along and ride the endless trails on the ranch through canyons and among the oak trees or across the expanse of grassy meadow lands. We have a good coral and ring to hold your mounts when they are not under saddle and a fine tack room to keep your tack out of the weather.

Don't forget just old fashioned walking. Take to the many ranch roads or stroll up the tree-lined creek looking for minnows, frogs or fossils that are evidence that the limestone formations that you walk on were once an ocean bed eons ago.

Bring your guns, amo. and targets. Our shooting range is within an easy walk from the house, or just drive down. There is a roofed place to stand or sit to in the shade while uou shoot. Target backboards are set up at 32 feet for pistols and at 25, 50, and 100 meters for rifles. If you have shotguns, we have flingers for clay pigeons.

There are lakes well stocked with large mouth bass perch and catfish for those with the skill and patience. Actually the young ones have a ball with a pole and live bate. There are a lot of weeds but that does not seem to deter. The large mouth bass are catch and release for anything over 15' but eat all you want between 11 and 15 inches long and all the catfish and perch you are skilled enough to land.

If you chose to wonder the area there are many interesting places to go and things to do. The giant Cyprus trees that line the Guadalupe River make the river one of the Hill Country's crowning glories, 20 minutes drive along the river to Hunt there is a restaurant called Elaine's Table, a good place to dine as you view the flowing river and dam. As you approach the city of Hunt you can chose either of the two fork of the Guadalupe river for a scenic drive. Either forks is defiantly a photo opportunity drive. The Guadalupe River originates in this area with the many springs that leap out of the Edwards limestone formation. One can play in it, slide down the spillway at the dam in Ingram, tube down it or just drive along its banks for many miles.

If you want to shop there is the quaint, old and well preserved town of Fredericksburg or antiquing in the Ingram Loop 10 minutes away or the town of Comfort within a half hour drive. Bandera claims to be the oldest cowboy town in the west and is 30 minutes away. On the way to Bandera is Camp Verde Restaurant which is near an old Cavalry Post where the US Army had imported Camels as transportation to relieve horses. The Camp Verde Restaurant is a great eatery and interesting location.

Just north of Fredericksburg lies the Enchanted Rock which is one of the grandest monoliths in the world. This giant granite mountain is climbable on walking trails

and makes a wonderful day trip for any who are sturdy enough to make the climb, but just seeing it is worth the drive.

Notes:
If you would like to learn more about the ranch, please visit our web site at: riachueloranch.com Note that we also have a very nice Lodge which is available for overflow. It sleeps an additional 14+ people in one Queen, eight bunks and two couch beds which are sometimes used as doubles. The Lodge is not up to the standard of the Creek House but check the photos and see that it is quite nice for the more rugged crowd. We are available for Weddings, family gatherings and company meetings. We offer much more than just a fantastic place to stay, you can walk, run, ride bikes, fish, play in the creek, shoot your guns, read, or just relax in as beautiful and serene places that you are ever likely to find anywhere.
