Hale Akai means home by the sea- your sanctuary. During high season*, you will enjoy the entire house, with all four bedrooms and four full baths. You will have the convenience of a fully appointed kitchen, washer and dryer with laundry soap and dryer sheets provided.
During low season, Hale Akai may be available as a one, two, three or four bedroom configuration- as many rooms as you want to fill!
The large lot has mature lush tropical landscaping, large fenced grass area and off street parking. Enjoy brilliant tropical sunset skies and a peak of the ocean from the lanai and upstairs suites. You'll have two master suites and a single bed room upstairs and a master suite and two bathrooms downstairs. You are provided toilet paper, hand soap, towels and all bathrooms have a tub/shower. The floor plan allows a large family or group of friends to share the home yet have individual privacy. The owner's master suite coffee maker, bar refrigerator and seating area- your own private get away! You will have secure wireless internet, HD Television with DVR and blueray, board and card games, a modest library of dvds, as well as fiction, historical, ethnographic, and geographic literature. Beach towels, mats and related items are also available.

We lived in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains and needing a break from stressful jobs, we found the La'a Loa /Kahalu'u/Keauhou area to be the perfect place to relax, heal and enjoy friends and family. We purchased Hale Akai as a vacation rental partnership. We fell in love with the island, neighbors and Hawai'i life. In 2006 we decided that we were more than just business partners and 'married'' our homes, lives and families. We have been privileged to make lifetime friends with many of our guests, some of whom have returned twice a year since 2004!

The location! We have just placed Hale Akai back on the vacation rental market after three years of sharing our home with family and friends. We have all of the benefits of living near the ocean on the beautiful Kona coast with out all of the noise and congestion of being right on the beach. After renting a home on the beach for two years, we found that being down on Ali'i drive, next to the ocean, was noisy, scary during high surf and expensive. Less than a mile from one of the best snorkeling beaches in Hawai'i, 0.2 miles from a white sand beach with amazing sunset and boogie boarding, close to shopping, public transit and centrally located on the western coast, it's the perfect location! We wanted this specific neighborhood for it's safe, peaceful and convenient location. There were few properties for sale in the area so our Realtor sent letters to every property owner in the neighborhood and we spent several vacations driving up and down the streets waiting for a home to become available!
La'a Loa, the name of this area, means very sacred and Keauhou is 'a place to return to for healing' The area has a peacefulness that stays with you. King Kamehaha III was born two miles away and this was a favorite vacation area for King David Kalakawa, his summer cottage is one mile away. Sharing Hale Akai as a vacation rental gives us a chance to give back some of the pleasure and peace this home has given our family and friends over the past 10 years. Hawai'i Island, known by tourists as the Big Island, is the most diverse having 11 of the worlds 13 climate zones. You can literally play in the snow and be back on the beach in just over an hour, walk in rain forests, over lava fields and actually watch lava flow.
The Kona Coast is known for it's beaches, coffee farms, cattle ranches, beautiful sunsets and peaceful, laid back atmosphere. Hale Akai is in a quiet residential neighborhood with both vacation rentals and residences.
As I sit on the lanai writing this, the palms are gently swaying and I can hear the surf crashing, doves and cardinals singing and far off in the distance the gentle sound of bagpipes from a Scottish neighbor. The sand is not the only magical part of this island!
Although we don't know you personally, we'd felt the warmth of your hearts and the aloha sent here by your kindness and generosity when we shared in your rental home on the Big Island.
I had a group of 11 people staying at the house and everyone we just happier than could be. The 4 bathrooms made it easy for everyone to get cleaned up after snorkeling just 1/2 mile down the road at one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. And now with the new road up to the main highway, getting to your next adventure is even easier. The house is also situated in the perfect location. Close to the downtown with lots of activity while at the same time close to the south end of town with quiet more relaxed pace. The house also comes pretty well equipped with toys and supplies for the beach and a kitchen that has everything you need for a perfect sunset barbecue.
We could not have had a better house or location for our vacation. We walked to beaches for sunsets, surfing and enjoying the sun. Had wonderful breakfasts and dinners on the back patio watching the geckos play in the beautiful garden, which included fresh papayas!! The house was comfortable and wonderful to spend time in and supplied with great kitchen equipment and beach supplies like towels, chairs, and snorkeling gear. We loved each and every day there and hope we can be back soon!
I have been coming here for almost 9 years, and the house just keeps getting better and better. The colors are soothing, the furnishings are comfortable, the plantings around the house are beautiful, and there are always birds singing.The kitchen is open and efficient, and the whole place has a feeling of peace and serenity. It's a reasonable walk to Magic Sands beach for body surfing, swimming, and nightly sunsets, and close to town for shopping and restaurants.
The house is in great proximity to Kona beaches and has a wonderful porch and patio to enjoy dinner and time outside. We walked to Magic Sands every night for sunset. There was plenty of room for everyone to spread out and we enjoyed using the beach toys and snorkeling equipment. My only regret is that I wish we could have stayed longer!
Two week vacation with my sister and a friend. We were able to rent three bedrooms and three bathrooms- lots of room! We each had our own bathroom an extra bathroom off the living room. Perfect for family gatherings and for people who want their own private space. I had the owner's suite with my own bar fridge, coffee maker and microwave which was perfect as my morning clock is different than theirs. Nice neighborhood, friendly neighbors and good selection of towels and beach chairs. I especially liked the short walk to the beach as the sunsets are AMAZING!

Hale Akai is a bright, airy home with a serene, peaceful feel. The kitchen is well-equipped and easy to cook in. The living area opens onto a lanai that is great for outdoor breakfasts, and the front screen door lets in ocean breezes. Bedrooms are spacious, with good closet space, comfortable mattresses, and adjacent bathrooms. The proximity to Magic Sands beach is excellent for swimming and nightly sunset watching. A great vacation home.
Hale A Kai - means Home by the sea, your vacation retreat. This 2000 square foot home is located on a quiet cul de sac in the Magic Sands community, twelve miles south of the Kona (KOA) airport. Walk less than two blocks to La`a Loa (Magic Sands) Beach for boogie boarding, swimming and fabulous sunsets .
Less than one mile away is Kahalu'u Beach Park, acclaimed for its easy access snorkeling for all levels. Swim with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and a large variety of reef fish or just relax and watch the sea turtles sunning on the rocks. Rentals and lessons are available for snorkeling, surfing and stand up surfing.
The Keauhou Shopping Center is two miles away featuring an array of shopping and dining options. Keauhou Bay features the Kona Country Club 18 hole golf course. Available at the Keauhou Bay Marina are kayak rentals and boat excursions to swim with manta rays and dolphins as well as a whale watching, snorkel and sunset cruises. You will be just 4 miles away from the village of Kailua Kona featuring dozens of restaurants, stores, historic sites and major retail stores such as Target, Ross, Walmart and Hilo Hattie. Drive or pay $2.00 for an open trolley ride from Magic Sands Beach Park. Just over an hour away is Mauna Kea Summit which offers spectacular star gazing with nightly tours available through the Mauna Kea Observatory Visitor Information Center. On winter days travel to the snow, rent a board or sled and bring back an ice chest full of snow for a beach snowman! Volcanoes National Park, Hilo Zoo, Rainbow and Akaka Falls are all about 2.5 hours away, so plan for a long day, the island really is Big!

We accept pay pal. DO NOT pay any invoice without talking to owner first. A deposit of 50% of total cost secures booking and final balance is due 60 days prior to arrival. Amount is refundable up 90 days before arrival with a 10% booking fee. After 90 days, if we can rent to another guest for any of your stay, that amount will be refunded, less the booking fee.
