Local festivals - the summer: The Carcassonne Festival takes place throughout July, both in the Cité and in the Bastide St. Louis. Many of the events take place in the Place Carnot and can be viewed from the apartment. The programme contains opera, dance, theatre, jazz, salsa, country and western and other concerts, folklore, street-theatre and comedy. In August a re-enactment of the days of the troubadours takes place. Knights and horses in full costume, along with processions of jugglers, acrobats, mime artists, gymnasts, dancers and musicians will entertain you with jousting and processions. There is an organ festival that takes place from mid-June to mid-September, with concerts on the famous organ at the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire in the Cite. The concerts are free and take place every Sunday and on all public holidays during this period. And on Bastille Day (14th July) there is a truly spectacular firework display - the Cité looks as though it is being set on fire with 25 minutes of fireworks.

Local festivals - the rest of the year: There is a Christmas market in the Place Carnot with a stage, a skating rink (3 euros an hour!) with a huge ice spectacular one of the evenings, artificial icicles on the fountain, and artificial snow on Christmas trees and the wooden stalls. There is a huge ferris wheel with views of the town and Cite just outside the Bastide walls, sledging, trampolines, fireworks and many other activities including the Foie Gras fair the Sunday before Christmas. It is quite magic, and clients who have been there over Christmas have been enchanted. There are three big fairs in Carcassonne during the year, on 6th March, 6th September and the Fair of Ste Catherine on 25th November. These fairs are huge events, with crafts and produce from the region and elsewhere. The Dame Carcas Pig Fair is at the beginning of March and at the end of March there are the antique fairs. The flea market takes place in September each year in the streets of La Trivalle, the district directly underneath the Cite.

Troubadour apartment- amazing

Jimbop Wirral, UK
Review Submitted: February 26, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
This apartment is by far the best equipped apartment we have ever stayed in!! The owner's attention to detail is second to none and I cannot think of one item of equipment that was not provided. All cleaning materials, shampoo, hair conditioner were there for use. The owner's customer service was superb, as much information as could be provided about the apartment and the area was sent by letter with the keys. Our stay was 18-25 February the weather was cold but fine, the outlook on to the Place Carnot was excellent and despite the cold we were able to sit out at the cafes and bistros exactly as stated in the owner's information pack.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this apartment to friends, absolutely perfect for a couple.
By the way I am not related in any way to the owner, just happened to be an amazing find.
Owner's Response: What an accolade! Many thanks to this client for passing his comments on to anyone who is looking for the apartment that has everything!

An autumn break

Phoenix2001 Telford, Shropshire, UK
Review Submitted: October 25, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Our 5 days in the Troubadour apartment turned out to be the most relaxing and enjoyable trip we have had for some time. The flights were on time (even early), and the transfer time from the airport was only about 15 minutes. We were a little apprehensive when we first opened the door to the service staircase which was in darkness, and looked as though it had seen better days, but this feeling soon melted away as we opened the door into this beautiful apartment.
We were so pleased that we not only found everything that was mentioned on the web site, but much more than we have ever had previously in a self catering apartment.
The owners information was not only accurate but understated, and we would certainly recommend Troubadour to friends and family.
To top it off our stay coincided with a three day wine festival and the accompanying street entertainment.

A really memorable break !
Owner's Response: We are delighted these clients had such a great autumn break. I do always say to clients that the apartment is even better than the photographs!

Heavy sleepers only !

Darren & Lisa Derbyshire England
Review Submitted: September 24, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Carcassonne is a beautiful place, day trips up the canal du midi, and visiting the mediaeval city will last long in the memory. The appartment itself was clean, very well equipped with just about everything you will need for a week or two away, however we did have some strong concerns about the bed but we have been assured this has now been rectified with a new mattress (nice to know that the owners listened and acted on our concerns).
The location of the appartment is fantastic, overlooking a choice of restaurants and 2 or 3 times a week there is a market in the square. There though lies the problem with this appartment, every morning around 5 o'clock industrial cleaners start their cleaning process. This is extremely noisy which can and did go on some mornings till 8 o'clock, needless to say we had very little sleep the whole time we were there (advice from the owner to buy some ear plugs was not really helpful !).
The railway station is just a short walk from the appartment and a day out at the coastal resort of Agde is recommended (cost was approx. £30 but was well worth the trip).
To summarise: Carcassonne is a beautiful place with a wonderful array of designer shops and well worth a visit but only if you are away from the square or a heavy sleeper.
ps It would help if there wasn't so many references to the 20 Euros we had to leave for laundry purposes which seemed to be everywhere.
Owner's Response: Our apologies to these clients for the problem they had with the bed. When we investigated we found that one of the supports had cracked, which made it sag in the middle. Very annoying as the bed was less than 2 years old, and we had purchased the more expensive divan rather than a cheaper slatted base. However, it transpired that under the fancy coverings it was simply a slatted base, but as the slats were not normally visible, it was considerably less substantial than a normal slatted base. So be warned, anyone equipping a property in France! There was no problem with the actual mattress, but the base has now been replaced by a new and robust slatted base, and the bed has been pronounced very comfortable by subsequent clients.
Regarding the early morning cleaning in the square, most clients are not bothered by it. However we do recognise that some people are light sleepers and in the information pack we suggest earplugs, obtainable from the local pharmacy. Most clients regard any noise from the square as part of the atmosphere, but I appreciate if the bed is uncomfortable as well then any disturbance is doubly annoying. I don't know what time the cleaning starts as it has never awoken me, however it certainly does not go on for 3 hours. Possibly the client heard the sounds of the market being set up.
As far as the reminders to leave the laundry money are concerned, there are two. I include a reminder in the letter sent with the information pack and the couple who look after the apartment also leave a reminder with their welcome note (along with flowers and wine). In spite of this, quite a few clients still forget to leave their laundry money, so we will continue to leave the same reminders. I have to say this is a curious criticism, coming from a client who had to be reminded a number of times to send her final payment. I emailed a couple of times (no reply), I telephoned her home number a couple of times (no reply), I rang her work number (she had left that job 2 months earlier) and I wrote a letter. I eventually had a text to say she had been on holiday (so why didn't she send it before she went?) but it was still over a week before I received the payment, by then a month overdue. In fairness, I have to say that she left the correct laundry money.

A French experience

Rob & Pete Sydney, Australia
Review Submitted: August 10, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
This well equipped comfortable apartment is a hidden gem behind a very ordinary street entry. With markets in the square downstairs 3 mornings each week fresh French produce is plentiful. Very central and a short walk to cite and train station. We enjoyed the extra touch of towelling robes and complimentary French champagne.
Owner's Response: We are so pleased these visitors from Australia enjoyed their holiday in Troubadour, and hope that the rest of their holiday in Europe was equally successful. The bottle that Troubadour gusts get by the way is not actually champagne; it is the local bubbly, Blanquette de Limoux, made by the same traditional method but which pre-dates Champagne, and which, so the locals assure us - of course - is far better!

the heart of the Bastide St Louis.

salebazzer sale, cheshire, UK
Review Submitted: August 9, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Troubadour is truly at the heart of the Bastide St Louis. The windows with traditional french shutters open out onto Place Carnot. The square is the meeting place for the area and is full of restaurants, bars and shops. The bars and restaurants have tables and chairs outside from breakfast into the evening. Three mornings during the week there is a market in Place Carnot, offering wonderful local produce. The apartment itself fits the general ambience, it is furnished and decorated in a traditional french manner, utilising high quality materials. We were delighted with the Troubadour ande hope to return in the future.
Owner's Response: Delighted to hear this client so enjoyed his stay in Troubadour, and we would love to welcome him back in the future.
