About Ken Kosal

Hi, I am Ken, and with my wife Michelle, we are offering this cabin for rent. We live in South Lyon and are 'up north' most weekends (we have a cabin across the lake from this rental). We have 2 college age boys and 2 English Setters.

Ken Kosal purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Ken Kosal chose Barton City

Michelle and I purchased this cabin in the fall of 2013 to 'keep it in the family'. We built a cabin on the other side of the lake in 2000, however from the time I was a baby I was coming up to this 'side of the lake'. This cabin is next to other family members and was very important to us to keep it in the family. I have 2 boys that will eventually end up with this place. In the interim we have chosen to rent this so others can enjoy the area/cabin/lake as I have for 50yrs.

What makes this cabin unique

This is a very family friendly location. Lots of room to enjoy the outdoors with the large lot, fire pit, deck, lakeside bench. There is a hiking trail around the lake, accessible from the end of the road, as well as Reid Lake nature area 3miles away. The 'ball diamond' is located in the park 1 block away with 'old fashion' playground equipment, a basketball court, horseshoe pits and is the 'center' of the Biggest 4th in the North.

Fall Color Tour

  • 5 of 5
Our fall get-away to the Knotty Pine was a nice break from the daily grind. The weather was cooler and not the best, but is to be expected this time of year. The cabin was clean and very well equipped. The welcome basket was a well-received surprise and we can't help but note that there was a flashlight and fire extinguisher in every room. The two fire places in the cabin description are non-functional. We enjoyed drives exploring the surrounding area, did some hiking and caught a few bass on the lake. There's not much to Barton City or Jewell Lake, even more so this time of year I'm sure, but that's just the way we like it. We have two children under age three and our only recommendation would be to bring a baby gate to block the stairs at the entry of the cabin; there were also some neighboring dogs that we needed to keep an eye one. There was just enough sand down by the lake to keep my daughter occupied. Thank you for a nice experience.

Owner's Response: Dennis,
I am glad you had a great time at the Knotty Pine Retreat, we enjoyed hosting you. Your suggestion for a child gate for the entrance way has been taken, and a folding gate is now at the cabin. Michelle and I look forward to hosting you and your family in the future.

beautiful!

  • 5 of 5
The knotty pine cottage is a wonderful place to get away from the day-to-day grind. I would highly recommend it for a weekend getaway. During the five days that we stayed there for my 30th birthday, the weather was not cooperating with our plans (hiking, canoeing, and just being outside) however, we were able to entertain ourselves with card games, reading and napping. We were able to take the row boat out for a day and rowed over to the island and walked around. Cute little island. The town itself is very small and consists of one gas station/grocery store and a bar. Apparently Kid Rock (not a huge fan..sorry) recently bought the bar and some land on Jewell Lake..well this could be a rumor but was just passing it on. Further, the cabin was stocked with the basic necessities and they had a cute welcome basket.
Would recommend this cabin!

Owner's Response: Sarah, Glad you guys had a great time, despite the cool weather! In addition to cards/books/DVD's galore in the cabin for those less than desirable weather days, there are a number of attractions within a short drive of the Knotty Pine (detailed in a "activities book"). As far as I am aware Kid Rock has not purchased the bar in town, however he has visited Barton City on more than one occasion. Again, Michelle and I are glad you were able to enjoy your 30th Birthday at the Knotty Pine!

Great place 4.5 stars

  • 4 of 5
We loved the beautiful scenery at the knotty pine retreat. There are so many things to do if you enjoy nature as my husband and myself do. We did lots of hiking, canoeing, mushroom hunting, and just plain relaxing. We loved the stocked kitchen, we cooked almost every day. Our dog loved the property and chasing the resident squirrels. The only reason we are not giving 5 stars is because they fireplace could not be used due to some repairs that will be happening this fall. We were really hoping to settle in next to a fire, and it was a little too cold to use the fire pit by the lake. So all in all if they had half starts we would give them a 4.5

Owner's Response: Lauren, we are glad you and your husband enjoyed your stay at the Knotty Pine Retreat! We are glad you enjoyed the surrounding area, we also enjoy the woods for Hiking, and Mushroom Hunting (spring is great). I am sure the squirrels provided your dog endless hours of enjoyment, as the area has an abundance of them. We look forward to hosting you again.

Lovely cottage, beautiful lake!

  • 4 of 5
Our early autumn stay at Jewell Lake was relaxing, quiet and refreshing. The Knotty Pine Retreat is a beautiful, homey cottage with everything imaginable provided. Ken and Michelle are gracious hosts and welcomed us with a basket of wine and treats, nice surprise! The rowboat and paddleboat provided us with great fishing, several lake excursions, and the snowmobile trail through the forest was great for long walks with Maizy, our beagle. Only drawback was John's fall into the lake after getting caught in a loose deck board, which Ken has assured us will be addressed. This is a perfect spot for anyone looking for "sunrise side" vacation.

Owner's Response: John and Cindy, Michelle and I are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at the Knotty Pine. We have enjoyed many "excursions" on the lake ourselves and am glad we can offer these same experiences to others. The situation with the dock has already been addresses so that lawn chair legs cannot slip between the boards. Again, we are glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to hosting you in the future.

Great cabin with everything you need

  • 5 of 5
This cabin was everything the listing said and more. Peaceful, quiet yet close to a store if you need anything. Owner even had treats set out for us in a welcome basket. The cabin was comfortable with an "up north atmosphere" that had all the conveniences of home. Good blue gill fishing in the lake.
