OLYMPIC WILDERNESS RIVERFRONT HOME

Port Angeles Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Unique House On A Unique Property In The Olympic Wilderness.

Nestled on the North Olympic Peninsula, in a wilderness valley with lush forest and park like meadows cradling the beautifully pristine East Twin River is a special lodge. In addition to modern, comfortable living, feel the good energy viewing and hiking the river through sublime valley vistas on a system of ancient trails and deer paths. The location of this 18 acre camp site is way off the grid but central to all the cool destinations the North Olympic Peninsula has to offer. It's a short 1/4 mile hike to the beaches on the Strait of Jaun de Fuca where surfing, crabbing, beach combing, and fishing can be enjoyed. The NOP offers a 'where do ya start?' list of stuff to do. Physical address is 95 Pangea Trail Rd. It is about 26 miles West of Port Angeles, WA, on Hwy 112 and then 1/4 mile south on Bear Creek-West Twin Rd. (Forest Service Rd. 30). The Joyce General Store has gas, food, laundry facility, etc. located in Joyce just 11 miles East of property (on Hwy 112).

The place is essentially open and well lit with windows up to a cathederal ceiling with a peak at 26', kitchen downstairs and bathroom and shower upstairs. Beams, columns, and logs support the loft style 2nd floor that looks out over and up the river. Acustics are incredible. This long term owner-builder project even includes some owner-builder furniture. Heat and cook with wood stove, light by oil lamp and Honda generator for lights and TV/DVD, Hot water by Instant heat (propane). Full shower/bathroom, small (propane) fridge, and a outdoor barbeque (propane) grill. You will find what you would find in a normal home - but it is way off the grid and very private in a beautiful little valley with one access road. Build a bonfire outside in the one of a half dozen campfire pits if ya want! Your pets are more than OK - they will love it!

A new Rumford Fireplace is working well for small fires.

Firewood is expensive! The nice cut firewood is for inside (woodstove or fireplace) burning. For yer campfire outside please gather wood on the property (use the wheelbarrow). There's plenty on the grounds. If you use the good firewood outside in yer campfire I need to charge $10 per wheelbarrow full.

The property was placed in a conservation easement agreement through the North Olympic Land Trust (NOLT) in 2005. This is pristine wilderness and can never be developed (or really anything else within eye site) in perpetuity. Very cool, thank you very much.

There are shelves of about 200 non-fiction books that include the best on our founding fathers and heroes, environmental conservation, and construction. If ya want to fish, rubber boots and hip waders, and even a level wind and fly rod are there to enjoy. Bring your favorite candle or incense or take a hot shower after hiking the wilderness terrain and blazon trails along the river. There are plenty of easy trails but my favorite is a real leg burner. 'Leg Burner' is a short cut trail to the beaches located on the north side of Hwy 112. The Twin beaches at the Strait Of Juan de Fuca are a popular surfing destination. There's lots to do at the beaches so head over and hike as far as ya want to find cool stuff.

Small and large campsites are numerous in this secluded river valley that has more than a 1/4 mile of trails along the low river bank. There are half a dozen rock fire pits for campers already set up. Plenty of firewood is available. Groups to 150+ can camp and enjoy the outdoors for parties, reunions, or musical concerts.

This place is for lovers of the outdoors and natural wilderness. You don't have to be conservation minded to enjoy this place but understand that like any development, guns and pesticides are not allowed - nor needed. Have a wonderful stay and enjoy nature.

Make sure you print and read the House Manuel. I must email it to you.

BTW I'm new to VRBO. There are about 30 great reviews on the place on Airbnb.com.

Building this place is a blast but must confess I would have finished much earlier if it wasn't for time spent enjoying the wilderness and river. I bought this 18 acre property in 1991 and got the building permit in 2001. Sure, I'd be much more financially secure if I would have invested in hi tech but one thing is true; it's not the things we own but the memories we get with them that are important. Oh, the stories.

I used to make money but now I make furniture. My little riverside hide out has served as my primary design studio and I finish pieces at my shop in Edmonds.

Its just a cool place. It's all about clean livin.

This property is under a conservation agreement with NOLT (North Olympic Land Trust) and protected from development in perpetuity.

BIG AND OFF GRID

  • 2 of 5
I had a good time in this beautiful home with friends and family. Sadly, I won't be returning. It may be acceptable for a small party of hunters or fisherman who do not mind the unkempt shed and garden areas and the axes and machetes laying about. I didn't mind having to cut kindling or bring in wood for the cookstove. Unfortunately it rarely got hot enough to cook anything. The wood supplied popped and smoked tremendously. Would have just used the barbecue grill, but there was no propane to light it. We all slept upstairs to avoid sleeping amidst the large black carpenter ants which were everywhere. Sleeping upstairs meant sleeping with the smoke from the cookstove. Prepare for a camping trip and you'll be okay. Bring bedding and sleeping pads as well as coolers and a cook stove. The surrounding area is wild and lush and the river is beautiful. The house is large and better than sleeping in a tent.

Owner's Response: 30+ good reviews on Airbnb and only one bad, incredibly over the top, review on VRBO. There is always a first, but in this case the idiot that concocted this bullshit will hopefully understand first how goddamn unwelcome she is. My vacation advice to her is don’t stray away from the pool and stay in your own end. Hopefully, her insane review will fool other right wing idiots into staying away. I don’t want people like her on my property.

I have a life and I do not wish to spend my time on this idiot but I will take up an important argument with her. I hate signs but do tolerate one sign on my gate - Pesticide Free Zone. That means the property doesn’t allow pesticides or poison, much less to use them to kill, on this wilderness property.

This depraved idiot sprayed almost a full spray can of ant/roach killer all around the floor of my house. When it gets warm the black ants fly all you can do is set out the ant traps but this idiots decided to kill them as a way to releave her suffering. My night crew of Bats takes care of insects in the house and a very good job they do. This part of the country has some of the cleanest air on the planet and a most pristine wilderness environment completely unpolluted and this retard dumps poisons all over the place. If I find one dead mammal or amphibian she is going to be taught what “over the top” means!

I could be here forever explaining how stupidly wrong she is on every little bullshit problem she imagined. I’m sure she’s done this to other people because it takes some kind of person to come up with all this bullshit. Where the hell do these goddamn people come from that can't run a standard propane grill. If it really was out they should just put in the backup tank!

How ya like me now?

RENTER BEWARE

  • 2 of 5
This cabin is in a very nice location and is well built. It has such potential to be a wonderful rental. However, there are a few things potential renters should be made aware of: Most important is that there is no stove. The propane grill that is advertised had no propane and it was really dirty with crushed on black stuff. The wood stove in the cabin is not really a cook stove, so it doesn't get hot enough to cook meat, bread, etc. Anyone with breathing issues should beware as the wood stove has a bad draw and is very smokey. Every time you open the door to put a log in, smoke flows out into the house.
The owner needs to work with a rental agent to learn how to make his cabin renter ready. Here are just some of the things we found inexcusable for a rental of this cost:
Lawn was unmoved and very high. Large black ants EVERYWHERE! Mouse droppings all over our food every morning. The indoor and outdoor garbage cans had garbage in them from the owner's stay a week before we came. The frig was full of food so that there was no room for our food. Also, I had to clean the frig (pretty dirty) and defrost the freezer (totally frozen over) before I could put my food in it. Tools were left out all over the place (parents with children beware), saws, machetes, knives, axes, etc. Dishes in the dish drain. Food left on counter. Also, it should be mentioned in the ad that the bed is and extra firm futon. I loved it! But others may find it to firm and may want to bring a foam topper for it.
The owner did a good job cleaning before we came, as the floors and surfaces were clean and the bed had clean sheets on it. It is a lovely place. Just a few tweaks and it will be renter ready. Most importantly.....the owner needs to make sure the prone grill is usable since there is no range for cooking on.
One more thing. Sadly, when I contacted the owner about the ants, mice, dirty frig, unmoved lawn, etc his response was angry and demeaning. I own and rent out a 200 year old cottage on lake and know how hard it is to make everyone happy. Responding to complaints in anger is never a good idea, no matter how insulted you may feel. I always take complaints seriously and do my best to fix the issue for my next renter.

This location is fairly central to all the attractions on the North Olympic Peninsula from Sekiu to the Elwha dam. The Olympic Park entrance at Crescent Lake is close as the crow flies but is about a 25 mile drive.
