We live in New York City with our two teenage sons and, though we will always love the Berkshires, we spend our summers on Long Island. South House has been an amazing house for our kids and our dogs with numerous activities right on the property and many many more just a short distance away. South House has hosted numerous House Parties and family reunions and remains a very special place for us.

Tyringham is a 'hamlet' founded in 1765. Located in a beautiful valley with hiking nearby at the 'Cobble' and the Appalachian Trail which borders our property, it is far from the traffic and hustle and bustle of nearby Stockbridge, Great Barrington and Lenox while still being close enough to enjoy all the cultural attractions, fine dining and ski resorts of the neighboring towns.
The house is beautiful inside with fine antiques, while the outside is gorgeous with lawns, water and forest.
The sparkling pond is great for swimming and is also stocked with trout for catch and release fishing. The tennis court has been newly surfaced. The paddle tennis court is a fun wintertime outdoor activity. The free-standing sauna house is charming.
There are cross country ski trails in the woods at the back of the property and throughout the properties extensive open lawns. The house is close to all the Berkshires has to offer.
We had a marvelous winter weekend here. A beautiful significant house with spectacular grounds and views. We didn't even want to leave to going skiing, we enjoyed sledding on the great rolling hills, relaxing in the gorgeous sauna and fun around the fire. John, who takes care of things, was very available and very helpful. This is the perfect house to come together with family and friends and nature. I hope to come back in the warm weather to enjoy the tennis court and biking through the picturesque little towns.
My husband and I chose this property to bring our children and 4 grand children, ages 7 -12 for the Christmas holidays. We had a wonderful time. Alas, there was no snow, so we couldn't take advantage of the beautiful and inviting hills for sleigh-riding, but the treasures of the house more than made up for it. 4 different comfortable sitting rooms with fireplaces meant that different activities could go on without age-related disagreements. There is a glorious selection of books, music and videos to appeal to all.
I kept back a star in my rating because it is an old house that the owners use infrequently. A lovely caretaker is on the property, but it is hard to maintain a house of that size without some aspects falling through the cracks. The Hamlet of Tyringham is remote. The town of Lee is the nearest for shopping and restaurants and is about 15 minutes away, so groceries and supplies need to be well organized for a large group.
Those reservations being said, our experience was glorious, and I long to return in a different season to enjoy the beauty of the property and the graciousness to which the owners have endowed this home.
