The apartment is situated on the Prinseneiland. I will give you some information about our location in relation to the rest of the city.
First of all, our neighborhood is still part of the Centre of Amsterdam. It is a very quiet and safe 'little village' right next to the 'busy' part of the city. There are still a few little shipyards but most of the warehouses are converted into residences. The city is more or less built in circles around the centre. We are the western part of the centre, nearby Central Station. That is at this moment I think the most popular part.
Next to our apartment lies the famous Jordaan. The Jordaan is a small part of the city, famous for the narrow streets with little shops, cafes and restaurants. We are divided from the Jordaan by a very nice shopping street. In this street there are two normal supermarkets (open 8AM/10PM), bakeries, a butcher and two organic supermarkets. There are all kind of shops, cafés, nice little restaurants everywhere around us.
We think Amsterdam is more a “big village”. That is, the part where you want to be as a visitor. You can walk everything, but certainly on the bike everything is really nearby.
The address is Prinseneiland 10, Amsterdam if you want to look it up on Google Maps. The street view is still from the period we were building, a few years ago. But one of the pictures you can click shows the finished building.
Walking distance to the Central Station 15 minutes (bike 7 minutes), Jordaan 10 minutes (bike 5 minutes), Dam 17 minutes (bike 10 minutes), and Rijks Museum / Van Gogh / Stedelijk Museum (contamporary/modern art) 35 minutes (bike 20 minutes), Anne Frank Museum 10minutes (bike 5 minutes).
If you want to explore more of the city we have bikes for rent and there are trams and buses to all parts of the city at a 4-minute walk. Apart from the general maps that we provide, we also made a map of our neighbourhood. A selection of breakfast-/lunch-places/restaurants/supermarkets is pointed out on this map. We also have “around the corner” a few very nice and good restaurants. We are happy to advise you and/or make reservations for you.
We are Liesbeth & Wouter Nieuwveld. We are living here for almost 40 years. Wouter was a ships-designer and builder and Liesbeth was a manager of theatre groups. We have two sons and five grand-daughters. We converted our offices and workshop into luxury and roomy apartments.
Wouter & Liesbeth Nieuwveld purchased this apartment in 2007
We rebuild several years ago the old wooden buildings of the shipyard. The wooden buildings are a landmark on the island where we are located.
The athmosphere of the three little islands on which we are located is unique. We are still the City Centre, but a quiet and safe little village next to the busy part of the centre.
This may have been the best accommodation I've stayed in. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars as it exceeded my expectations. I was hesitant when booking that it was a little outside of the centre of the city but it proved to make no real difference, in fact I am so glad I did.
Depending on how quick a walker you are, it is only 10 to 15 minutes from Central Station, down a really lovely street full of interesting shops and restaurants. Really the only way to get around Amsterdam is to walk, although there are trams, I never used them. If from this apartment you want to go to the museum area, there is the number 3 tram that is close by that will take you there.
The apartment itself was just lovely and quite large; big living area, kitchen, bedroom and a walk in wardrobe you could dance in. I’m not sure how old it is but it was so clean and fresh it felt like we were the first people in there. The facilities were fantastic, nothing seemed to be missing, all the appliances had instruction manuals. There was coffee and tea, they have their own liquid soap and shampoo, we had some welcome treats and wine and a beautiful vase filled with fresh tulips.
The outlook was amazing on an island on one of the canals with lovely views. We just sat there looking out each morning not really wanting to go out and each night not wanting to go to bed. It was really nice being among the locals going about their daily business in such a lovely peaceful location.
Our hosts Wouter and Liesbeth were such lovely people, something we found throughout Amsterdam. As well as a usual tourist map, they have made up their own map of the area that includes local restaurants, shops and supermarkets. Everything they did and supplied was a traveller’s dream, thank you.
We stayed in the Harbor House. It was spectacular. First dealing from a distance with the host was super straightforward, quick, and pleasant. When we arrived it was even better. Wouter had a great list of recommendations, and history of Prinseneisland that were quite useful and interesting. The apartment is well appointed and completely lovely. The bed is very comfortable, the bathroom quite nice. The living room was spacious and the dining room had a great table where we could have meals or catch up on a little email during the mornings. The apartment has small canals on two sides and this gives a lot of interesting visual relief to the apartment. The Island itself is a sea of calm inside an ocean of big city hustle and bustle. Yet it was easy to walk to the center, and the busses and the trams were nearby, as was shopping. We took a cruise with Wouter in his boat and we highly recommend this wonderful journey. We certainly will come back to this property when we next visit Amsterdam.
Having stayed in the 'Lighthouse' apartment many times previously, this time I tried out the 'Harbour House' and I now I have to say I don't know which is my favourite.
This unit has a particularly wonderful sitting area with massive couch that overlooks giant windows that open fully to reveal the canal views. On this occasion, the canals were full of birds and even a swan family with babies!
With a fully stocked kitchen and dining area, this apartment is very comfortable and quiet.
It should be noted it is a 'studio' style, in that there is no door to the sleeping area, but if you're single or a couple traveling together, that shouldn't pose any issue.
Unlike the 'Lighthouse' which has a huge bath/tub, this unit only has a shower, but that's about the only other difference.
I highly recommend this unit for any single or couple looking for a nice quiet residence within about a 10 minute walk of the centre of Amsterdam.
Wouter and Lisbeth are two of the most friendly hosts you will ever meet and consistently exceed my expectations and always make sure my stays are wonderful and memorable.
My wife and I recently returned from a stay at the Island Apartments in central Amsterdam. The location of the apartments is unique in every aspect. It is a 15 minute walk, or a five minute bus ride (buses 18, 21, & 22) from Central Station, the heart of the city. However, the complex is situated on an island on the northwest side of the railroad tracks., and is like being in a small, peaceful, Dutch village, completely free of traffic and street noise. There are two lovely canals and iconic Dutch lift bridges visible from the floor to ceiling windows and glass doors in the apartments.
The professionally managed apartment complex is run by two individuals who reside on the premises. They are extremely personable and friendly, and cater to every need and want of the renters including helpful tourist advice, ordering tickets to online attractions, printing boarding passes, and providing airport pick-up and drop-off.
There is an Albert Heijn supermarket, an ABN-Amro ATM, and a tram and bus stop at Harlaamer Plein, a ten minute walk from the apartments. Tram 3 will bring you to the major museums and the Concertgebouw.
“The Harbor House” is a brand new, spacious (1100 sq. ft.) one bedroom open plan apartment furnished in a contemporary Scandinavian style. It is situated on the first floor of a modern building. The large windows and glass doors allow for plenty of fresh air and light. The European designed kitchen is large and is complete with the latest in appliances, utensils, china, and cookware. Special features of the apartment include two large flat screen TVs with multi-language programming, fast and secure Wi-Fi, a cell phone, and extensive brochures and maps of Amsterdam. There is also a washer and dryer in a separate utility closet.
Of all my recent European rentals, this is definitely at the top of the list. It is well worth the price and in all respects a true bargain.
My husband and I spent 8 nights in this terrific apartment - great, quiet location, but within walking distance to all tourist sites as well as to a wide variety of shopping (organic as well as standard supermarkets), restaurants, etc. Tram to Museums (Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, Van Gough) is a 5 minute walk. The apartment is ideal for an extended stay (although you can also book for only a few days) in Amsterdam & well-priced - romantic canal views, very comfortable, well equipped, tastefully and thoughtfully furnished and well maintained. . Owners live on the property and could not be more helpful, well informed or accommodating. They take pains to be welcoming hosts which adds to the enjoyment. Take a private boat tour with Wouter!
We stayed here for our wedding anniversary trip to Amsterdam. We were first taken by the size and space in this beautiful apartment. It's roomy, airy and contemporary and is perfect for couples. It has everything you will need and more with a lovely waterfront view. We were also taken with the brilliant help Wouter and Liesbeth were with anything we needed. They even rescued our anniversary night by organising a good restaurant as everywhere of any quality was booked. (Source your restaurant a couple of weeks before coming if thats your thing).
Amsterdam is a great city and we felt like we lived in the place for the weekend. The apartment is located in a corner of the city centre that is lovely and quiet, yet a few minutes walk away from Jordaan and the hustle, bustle and fun. We just had brilliant fund weekend!
I have stayed in many properties and we could not recommend this place enough.
