About Steve Shapero

My wife and I both grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and after many years of working in the high tech industry we started thinking about where we wanted to retire. After a long search we settled on Northwest Montana, and after buying some acreage we built our dream house overlooking Swan Lake about 10 miles outside of the village of Bigfork. We chose Montana because it had everything we wanted, boating, hiking, horses, camping, and was within an hour's drive of Glacier National Park, one of our favorite places to visit. We wanted a small town atmosphere where we could get to know everyone and Bigfork was just the right size for us. We love living here, even during the harsh winter months, and we have been able to do certain things, such as dog sledding, that we could never do in California. Even though we have only lived here for 5 years, we can't imagine living anywhere else!

Steve Shapero purchased this condo in 2014

Why Steve Shapero chose Bigfork

We started looking for a vacation rental property in 2013. Bigfork is a very popular resort area, and there were a number of rental properties for sale, but we wanted to buy in the best possible location, which meant as close to downtown as possible. We didn't want a large unit that would cost a lot to maintain and that we would also have to charge a lot for. A 1 bedroom, 1.5 bath two level condo was the perfect size for us and at the end of 2013 we were lucky enough to find a condo for sale near downtown. Downtown Bigfork is the hub for activity in this area, and there are lots of things to see and do there. It's an easy drive to Kalispell, Polson or Glacier National Park, and if someone is interested in water sports it's the perfect spot on Flathead Lake. We have a boat and enjoy spending the day on the local lakes. We couldn't find a better location for us to have a vacation rental.

What makes this condo unique

The best thing about this condo is that you can walk out the front door, cross the street, and be in the heart of the downtown area. Just stroll down Electric Avenue and enjoy the shops, bars, restaurants and live theater available throughout the year. You can walk south on Electric Avenue, across the steel bridge, and spend some time either listening to a band in Sliter Park or letting your kids enjoy the playground area. Head north on Electric Avenue, turn right on Grand Avenue and walk up the hill to the trail head for the 2 mile Swan River Nature Trail. It's a leisurely hike that takes you along the beautiful Swan River. After you're done hiking you can head back into town and have an adult beverage at one of the two local bars, or grab something to eat at one of the many local eateries. You can now wander through the shops and galleries looking the the perfect gift for that special someone. Being located so close to downtown means you can walk to anywhere you want without having to get in your car.

A nice get away

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Bigfork. We loved the location of this condo on the Swan River. The roomy layout allowed us to have friends and family over for dinner a few times during our stay. I especially enjoyed the gas fireplace in the morning while I had a cup of tea.

Montana autumn

  • 4 of 5

Northern Montana is beautiful in the fall and Bigfork a great spot to land when it's a bit quieter than in the busy summer months. Very comfortable and well equipped condo, a very short stroll to some excellent restaurants and shops. Great cycling, close to a wonderful walking trail along the north side of the river and lake access if one is seeking that.

Lots of room in the condo, ideal for couples, a beautiful private deck overlooking the river. Leave the window open at night, listen to the river rapids just outside and relax.

Luxury condo dog friendly

  • 4 of 5

One of the best VRBO rentals I’ve ever had the pleasure to stay in! The views of the Swan River from the expansive windows both upstairs and downstairs are wonderful. Used the grill and ate on the deck, love the sound of the river, watching deer prowl through on their own dinner search each evening. The interior design, décor, and furnishings are luxurious (the bed was amazing!). All the electronic stuff worked great too – TV with satellite, wireless internet. Owners do a great job providing instructions on how to operate everything (which surprisingly is not always the norm when renting vacation rentals). The condo is larger than the pictures convey, exceptionally clean, and very private. I appreciate that they allow dogs!! My dog was in heaven sitting out on the deck watching the deer and listening for other nature sounds. This is not just a simple condo. The owners clearly put effort and money into making it a truly wonderful experience for their guests.

The only recommendation I have is that the owners upgrade the kitchen cooking utensils to match the quality of the rest of the condo. For instance, steak knives, measuring cups and a strainer for pasta or washed lettuce would be nice additions. Some of the other utensils are a bit “worn out” and should be replaced.

Otherwise, wonderful place to stay!

The heart of the Flathead!

  • 5 of 5

A hearty thank you for the great accommodations in Big Fork. The place proved to be a great launch point for our mountain biking, hiking, Glacier Park, Flathead Lake cram adventure!

We had great communication form the owner and checkin was a breeze. Clearly this owner has experience in managing vacation rentals. Everything looked great on arrival and the picturesque view of the Swan River topped it all off. Believe me when I say that the pictures are great, buy the real thing is even better!

We have already had the pleasure of recommending your place to a number of friends and family members. One of my mother's beloved friends was the owner of Brookies Cookies for some years and this made this already special place even more special in our eyes. To be greeted by a basket containing these special treats set the tone for a great stay in the Flathead. We will look forward to a return visit!

The Village of Bigfork has many avenues for adventure throughout the year.

During the summer months there are the rivers and lakes in the area, including Flathead Lake (the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River), Swan Lake and Echo Lake. Boating, Sailing, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and tubing are very popular activities for both visitors and locals. Surrounding Flathead Lake are many cherry orchards which means fresh sweet cherries during the summer.

Bigfork Village has many quaint shops for purchasing one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. There is a fudge shop as well as coffee shops and full menu restaurants.

In the evening there are concerts in Sliter Park, and the Bigfork Summer Playhouse provides musicals and dramas throughout the summer months.

During the day there is plenty to do away from the water. There are hiking trails throughout the area and horses can be rented from one of the local dude ranches. There are also some challenging peaks in the area for anyone interested in mountain climbing.
