Bald Head Island House Rental Photos and Description
Great for large families or groups the Indigo Pelican is adjacent to the beach
The Indigo Pelican is a 5 Bedroom 5 1/2 Bath luxury beach house with beautiful views of the beach and ocean. Our wonderful wrap around porches are the perfect place for reading during the day (whether on the hammock or chaise lounge) or for cocktails and appetizers while watching the breathtaking Bald Head Island sunsets. The open floor plan makes it easy for everyone to be together while cooking in our fully equipped modern kitchen. Our large, casual living room (with gas fire place) is inviting and is perfect for movie or game nights after a long day at the beach. Each of the 5 bedrooms are generously sized and decorated tastefully, in casual beach style.
The house has Cable TV including a number of premium movie stations. Each bedroom has its own flat panel LCD TV and DVD player. The house is equipped with WIFI for high speed Internet access (in case you're not ready to fully escape from the outside world). All linens are provided during your stay as well.
Each of the bedrooms has it's own private bathroom. There is also a powder room on the first floor off of the living room. There is one master bedroom on each floor which is equipped with a king-size bed, garden tub and private shower. Both master bedrooms face the ocean and the downstairs master opens directly onto the porch via a sliding glass door.
The second bedroom on the first floor has two queen-size beds and its own bathroom with a shower and bathtub. This bedroom opens via sliding glass door onto the portion of the porch that is screened in. The other two upstairs bedrooms have two queen-size beds each, as well as their own bathrooms with shower and bathtub.
The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances including microwave, stove, refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, coffee maker and wine cooler. There is also a second large refrigerator/freezer in the laundry room which makes it easy to provision for your entire stay. The kitchen has a dining nook with a 4 person table where we usually eat breakfast and lunch. There is also is a bar with four bar stools. It's a great informal place to eat or spend time with the cook!
A great part of the Indigo Pelican's open floor plan is the dining area - which connects the kitchen and living room. The large, casual, dining table sits 8 comfortably, but could easily accommodate several more if necessary. There is also a full wet bar with ice maker that is great for large groups or entertaining.
Outside there is a gas grill which is great for summertime grilling. You'll need to check the propane tank and take it to the island hardware store to refill if necessary.
The house is also equipped with two 4 passenger golf carts for use during your stay.
Access to golf, swimming and tennis at the Bald Head Island Club is also included in your rental. If you're a golfer and haven't played BHI yet, we highly recommend it. The course is private, was designed by George Cobb and opened for play in 1974. It was recently restored by Tim Cate, who breathed new life into the course and made it more challenging.
There are two great swimming pools on the island that you'll have access to - The BHI Club pool (located adjacent to the golf and tennis facilities) and the Shoals Club pool (located at the southeast point of Bald Head Island). Both facilities are fantastic and offer a wonderfully fun family atmosphere. Each pool has a restaurant and full service bar so you don't have to leave for refreshments!
Turtle central is also a stop we recommend for children and adults alike. The conservancy holds numerous activities for members and non-members throughout the year. The most popular event, watching turtles hatch, has limited availability so be sure to book early.
If you have not visited Bald Head Island before, it's important to know that there are no cars allowed on the island. On the island, transportation is by golf cart only. You park your car in the parking lot at the BHI Ferry Terminal (mainland) and ride the ferry to the island. Parking costs $8-$10 per day depending on the season. Ferry tickets cost $24.75 for adults and $13.75 for children.
On the island there are lots of great things to do. There are a several stores in which to shop, restaurants, a post office, church, hardware store and a full service boutique grocery store.
You can rent stand up paddle boards, kite boards, bicycles etc at Coastal Urge on Bald Head Island. Riverside Adventure Company (at the marina) also rents beach chairs, umbrellas and bicycles by the day or week.

About Jason Swain
Hi, we're the Swains (Jason, Katie & Cate)! We live in Wilmington, North Carolina and Bald Head Island is our sanctuary. Jason is a real estate developer and Katie is a retired banker, part-time accountant and stay at home mom.
Jason Swain purchased this house in 2013
Why Jason Swain chose Bald Head Island
For us, Bald Head Island is the perfect getaway. Our family has been vacationing on the island for years and in 2013 we saved up enough money to become part owners of the Indigo Pelican. We love the island because it is truly a retreat. When we get on the ferry from the mainland, we find all the worries from home melt away. The island life is laid back, the perfect contrast to our normal fast pace schedule. For us, BHI is ideal because of the island is so family-centric. We never feel worried for the safety of our daughter and the clubs, pools, beaches and nature preserves provide an endless array of entertainment and exploration activities. Whether or not you stay in our house, we hope you'll visit BHI. It's truly a wonderful place.
What makes this house unique
We fell in love with the Indigo Pelican because of how nice it is, it's size and proximity to the beach. As one of the largest homes on the island (insofar as bedrooms/baths are concerned) the house can accommodate all of our family when we have big get togethers. One of the things we really love about the house are the great wrap-around porches. Since the house faces west, we always have great front row seats to the evening sunset. Sitting on the porch, sharing appetizers and drinks at the end of a leisurely beach day is our favorite way to get away from all the demands of daily life.
