Beautiful home with amazing views - ideal for a quiet relaxing holiday

Come and enjoy a relaxing stay at beautiful Kera Villa by the sea (This summer only two weeks 31st May-14 June 2014.) KERA VILLA is set in an acre of olive trees + gardens (with your own 10x5m private pool) and directly overlooks the sea and unspoiled sandy beach of Kera Bay and has superb sea and mountain views. This spacious, beautiful home is equipped to a very high standard. It has a very attractive, open plan, split-level layout with an enormous lounge/dining area (10x6m), fitted kitchen plus a large lower sitting room. All these rooms have views across the bay. With high ceilings and many large patio doors the property remains cool in summer. Fans and double aspect doors/windows keep the bedrooms cool WITH AIR CONDITIONING for any really hot nights. The bedroom balconies provide direct access to the wonderful pool area surrounded by flowering plants and olive trees. The two large bedrooms + pool area have super mountain views. There are open and covered terraces to provide sun or shade throughout the day and great places to eat or relax. Both Almerida and Kalyves (5 min drive or 10-20 min walk) have lovely blue flag beaches and many seaside tavernas and shops.

WIFI AVAILABLE IN 2014 and a new en-suite bathroom for bedroom 2 will be completed by April 2014

PRIVATE SWIMMNG POOL: The swimming pool is 10 x 5 metres plus Roman end steps and is at a constant depth of 1.4 metres. It is totally secluded as the pool and the very large tiled area are surrounded by olive and fruit trees plus other specimen plants making this a very attractive area of the property for both swimming and relaxing. In addition there are lovely views across our olive trees towards the White Mountains. It is a favourite part of Kera Villa for many guests.

BEDROOMS: Both bedrooms are large with one having a king-sized bed with new memory foam mattress and the other 2 twin beds. Both have fitted wardrobes and bedside tables and lights. The bedroom balconies overlook the pool and stairs lead down from them to the pool area below. At one end of the pool area a covered veranda provides a shady spot for reading, relaxing or eating and drinking. In addition there are chairs, a table, sunbeds and a sun umbrella located elsewhere around the pool.

AROUND THE VILLA : From the lane you wend your way along our private drive through the olive trees (that are illuminated in the evenings) to the far end of our land to the villa. It is located overlooking the bay to maximise the superb sea views. There is a large covered terrace (with built-in BBQ plus dining table and chairs) accessed from the lounge through the patio doors which will fold back completely. Go through the stone archway and there is a veranda which runs across most of the front of the house and provides an ideal location for relaxing or dining in the shade whilst listening to the waves on the beach below. In addition at the front there is also a large stone-paved area directly overlooking the bay below which is ideal for somewhere to eat or read in the sun or shade. The sheltered side terrace provides a perfect place for breakfast especially on windy days with a new stone arch - framing another super view. From the villa you get amazing skies as the sun rises over the small island in the bay and above the Drapanos mountain.

BEACHES : A short stroll along the lane leads to the unspoilt Kera beach in one direction or walk the other way and you can go down to a lovely, small and often deserted cove on the other side.

GARDENS AND ROOF TERRACE: The villa has a very large flat roof terrace and a large furnished room both of which have stunning panoramic views across Souda Bay and the Apokronas peninsular and is a great place for watching the sunset. Very good quality dining table, chairs and sun loungers are provided so that this is a most attractive area to sit and relax in the sun or shade or where you could have a simple meal or drink while admiring the views, sunset or just star-gazing. The tiled area in front of the room (which has a fridge for drinks!) leads onto a section of the terrace which is covered with green Astroturf and has glass walling on two sides to create a relaxing, seamless view of the Aegean Sea below.

GARDEN: There are young fruit trees along one side of the garden and over 50 olive trees. Close to the house there are different areas filled with specimen plants and flowers to provide all year round colour and interest and to make the setting for your holiday as attractive as possible.

Our main home is still in England in a small rural village. We are now both retired and able to spend more time in our lovely holiday home by the sea in Crete whilst also renting it out to provide us with some income.

Mrs Pattie Sidwell purchased this villa in 2002

Location was the absolute key for us - as near to the sea as possible but with beautiful mountain views as well - and within walking distance of tavernas and some shops and only a short drive from larger shops and other amenities ..... and a much warmer and sunnier climate than in the UK.

We found the perfect location - but our budget meant buying a property that needed quite a lot of work to make it a very special, luxury home. Many years later we are still continuing to improve Kera Villa and its acre of land - but as one of our reviewers wrote - 'Kera Villa was perfect when we visited 4 years ago but Pattie and Mick have managed to even improve on that'!

More than anything it is the superb sea views from almost all windows and terraces that makes Kera Villa the ideal place for a really relaxing holiday. You will have your own lovely private pool surrounded by flowering plants and olive trees and are only a short walk down the lane to a small unspoilt sandy beach - perfect for paddling and swimming. Kera Villa provides a very special, high quality home with spacious rooms and a kitchen stocked with herbs and spices etc - not a barely equipped rental property.

Amazing in October 2013

We had an amazing week at Kera Villa. We were on our honeymoon and couldn't have wished for a better place to stay. The villa was really well equipped with lots of extras including a lovely welcome pack and well stocked cupboards for self-catering. The villa is huge with several outdoor areas all with lovely views. The pool is brilliant and very private.
We had a very peaceful and relaxing holiday but also enjoyed going to the nearby towns for evening meals in addition to Chania which is only a 25min drive away.
Would definitely recommend to family and friends.

Kera Villa is an excellent base for a holiday in crete. It is very well kept and for a party of two couples it provides a lot of living space, there's several seating and dining areas to choose from and plenty room for privacy. We particularly enjoyed the bbq area and relaxing by the pool. The cleaning/maintenance staff are friendly and unobtrusive and the owners are helpful, organised and generally a pleasure to deal with.

The pool is a good size, perfect for four to float around in. An absolute luxury if you've spent time in the sun.

It is a simple matter to walk to Kalyves and Almerida, both routes have steep portions but they are easy to find and it only takes about 20-25 minutes to get to Almerida which felt further on foot. Almerida felt a little more tourist oriented but had a more easily accessible range of restaurant and bars. It's worth having a walk around as we didn't discover the butcher and bank machine in Almerida until later in the holiday.

We had a hire car for most of the time for trips further afield, shopping and airport transfers. It was convenient but we did without for four or five days and had no trouble keeping stocked with water or getting about. Tourist trips are available in both villages and you can get a bus to Chania quite easily.

All in all we had a great holiday, helped in no small part by the quality of the accommodation and location.

We have just returned from a relaxing week at Kera villa, thoroughly rested and recuperated. The villa is 'home from home' and everything you need for a relaxing holiday.
We hired a car to get from Chania airport and with Pattie's directions found our way to the villa easily. The villa is spacious with large bedrooms and beautiful views from all the rooms, even the main bathroom! The living area space is large and well equipped with whatever you may wish to do, from reading or sitting around the large dining room table playing cards in the evening after dinner. The kitchen is well equipped with whatever you may need, a very large fridge freezer and even a dishwasher!
The choice of outside living space is amazing; from the table and chairs outside what we nicknamed the 'snug', where we spent our mornings having breakfast and later in the day having lunch; to the pool area where we spent the majority of our time until approximately 5pm when we moved to the roof terrace to enjoy the late afternoon sun until it was time to get ready to go out for dinner.
The information folder was very useful with maps to Almerida and Kalyves, together with information and maps on other sightseeing opportunities.
We split our evenings between Almerida and Kalyves, the latter being our favourite place for tavernas; both being approximately a 15-20 minute walk from the villa, although you will need a torch on the return journey! We would also suggest maybe a taxi from Almerida.
Also in the folder was photos of the transformation of the villa; It was very interesting to see how Kera villa has been renovated over the years and quite unbelievable what Pattie and Mick have done over the years and how different it now looks!
We would have no hesitation in recommending this villa and look forward to returning in the future, hopefully for 2 weeks next time!

Owner's Response: As this review kindly confirms Kera Villa provides a great location for those who want a really relaxing holiday but it is also a good base for touring the western part of Crete. Nearby Almeryda has plenty of tavernas set right by the sea and a lovely blue flag beach but you can also enjoy water sports there if you are seeking more 'action' - without the intrusion of noisy jetskis etc.

Superb holiday home

We stayed at Kera Villa for a wonderful 2 weeks. We are a family of 4 with 2 young boys (6 and 8). The villa is wonderfully spacious, with spectacular views across the sea and mountains, that you never tire of. There is plenty of space for children to play inside when they have had enough of the wonderful pool, the bedrooms are extremely comfortable and the kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need.

We ate outside several times, but inside is a large dining room table to eat at or play cards etc. the roof terrace has wonderful views, but we didn't use it much, preferring to sit on the front terrace nearer the sea.

We used Almerida beach a lot, which is great for children and people watching, and we ate out many times in the waterfront tavernas, one of my favourite things was that all of the restaurants are literally on the water.

The beach at Georgeopolis (sp) is worth a visit, as is Rethymnon, but best of all was the shopping and harbour at Chania.

We also thoroughly enjoyed a speedboat trip from Almerida that takes you around the caves in the area and gives you the opportunity to snorkel and jump from the boat into the crystal clear water.(Dream Adventure Tours)

Pattie was very helpful answering all my questions promptly and thoroughly and giving lots of useful information. Gren, Gill/Sylv and David the gardener/handyman were all very pleasant and helpful.

We would wholeheartedly recommend this villa to anyone wanting to experience the beauty of Crete and a marvellous holiday home. We would suggest that air conditioning is installed in the bedrooms however as the heat in August was oppressive even at night.

We always take the trouble to check whether the villa is going to be suitable for all our guests and are happy to answer any questions they may have. With its location on an unfenced cliff edge + with a roof terrace and gardens not suitable for lively children or ball games we only accept children after parents have confirmed that this setting is safe and appropriate for their children. This also helps to maintain our high standards both inside and outside the villa.

It is our intention to consider installing air conditioning in the two bedrooms, with a local additional charge for its use because, as electricity charges increase and with our concern for the environment, we would want it to be used only when really necessary. Some guests may not want or need to use it and so it seems unfair to increase the rental cost for all.

A Perfect Week !

We had the most perfect week at Kera villa,from every point of the property the views are stunning and the pool area is a tranquil haven.
We didn't hire a car but walked to the neighbouring towns of Kalyves or Almerida on a daily basis and Chania is an easy bus ride away.
The villa is well equipped, but to be honest we spent very little time inside preferring to spend time on the exterior terraces or the roof top area.
Thank you to Pattie who was so helpful throughout.
We can't wait to go again!

Other guests that want to forget about driving and enjoy walking find many places nearby within easy walking distance. However, if they can drag themselves away from Kera Villa and want to venture further afield, they can hire a car or a bike locally for a day or two. There are also opportunities to book excursions by coach and/or boat to visit other places in Western Crete or even to enjoy a day trip to Santorini.

The small hamlet of Kera stands on its own bay between the villages of Almerida and Kalyves (both with shops and seaside tavernas) which are in walking distance or can be reached quickly by car. The sea is 20m below the villa and beach access is 100m along the lane.

FIND US on Google earth satellite- KERA VILLA is set higher up the headland to the left of Kera Studios - set in our own olive trees making the villa and pool very private. The immediate local area is entirely rural with olive groves and grape vines stretching back towards the White Mountains that look amazing especially when capped with snow.

PLACES TO VISIT : Within easy driving distance is the old Venetian city of Chania, set around a lovely ancient harbour with waterside tavernas; it has good shopping facilities and interesting museums. Easily reachable are many lovely mountain villages and stunning gorges (like the famous Samaria Gorge). You can visit the ancient site of Aptera or travel a little further to Knossos or other Minoan ruins or sites. Also within driving distance are many lovely beaches eg. Elafonissi on the west coast or drive to the beautiful south coast on the LIbyan Sea; or further a-field there are daily boat trips to Santorini in the main season.

The washing machine is also fitted into one section of this bathroom and ironing facilites are also available. The en-suite shower room is also of a good size and has plenty of natural daylight and ventilation provided by the large tilt&turn window. It has a new shower enclosure and the room has been completely re-organised and re-tiled to a higher standard.

  • The very large main bedroom with a King-sized bed has a window facing the bay and tilt and turn doors (with insect screen) on to its own balcony overlooking the pool and with views across our olive grove to the White Mountains. It is adjacent to the large main bathroom. The second twin-bedded room has two sets of tilt and turn doors onto its own balconies with the same super views across the pool area and towards the mountains and it has a new en-suite shower room. Both bedrooms have access down to the pool, extensive fitted wardrobes, bedside cabinets, dressing tables and large floor standing fans for use when required. With louvred shutters to provide security and privacy it is possible to leave open the doors and windows so that any sea breeze can also blow through. However air con is provided for use on hot evenings when the doors and windows must be closed to work effectively.
