The Quinn Cottage

An Orcas Island Waterfront Retreat

The Quinn Cottage is a lovely waterfront home nestled on a sunny, wooded acre of land looking across Harney Channel to Shaw Island. The famous San Juan Island ferries and a continual parade of pleasure boats sail by the cottage’s view throughout the day. The south-facing exposure catches the sunrise and sunset as well as all the sunlight and warmth possible through the seasons. It is a perfect location.

The cottage is just two miles from the Orcas Island ferry landing and public dock and the quaint Orcas Village with a well-stocked country market, shops and eateries, the Victorian era Orcas Hotel and Restaurant, movie rentals, whale watching excursion boats, and kayak rentals. Also two miles from the cottage is Bayhead Marina with boat slips and an easy boat and kayak launch ramp. Lake Killebrew, a small public lake only one mile away, is fun for fishing and exploration.

An abundance of wildlife can be enjoyed from this pretty seaside retreat: deer, rabbits, raccoons, otters, mink, seals, bald eagles, heron, and an endless variety of other sea, shore, and land birds. At low tide the rocks at the water’s edge offer hours of exploration for oysters, starfish, crab, small fish, octopus, jelly fish, and other sea creatures.

Kayaking from this side of the island is fabulous. Other islands, coves, beaches, and villages are all within easy paddle distances. Rental guests are given information and advice so they can create their exciting kayaking adventures.

At night the sound of water lapping against the rocks and beach lulls visitors to sleep.

This light, airy, newly remodeled home has an open living room, dining room, and kitchen with vaulted ceilings, skylights, and floor to ceiling windows opening onto a large wrap-around main deck. The panoramic view from this 'great room' is stunning. It is also completely furnished with all the details of a cozy family cottage.

The main level has two bedrooms, the Master with a queen bed and the other with a trundle bed (to be used as either two twins or one king), as well as a colorful bathroom with shower. The separate lower level is a very large bedroom with a main king bed area, a nice bunk bed niche, and its own bathroom with shower. It is connected to the upper level by exterior stairs and has its own private exterior entry. The water view is beautiful from this room's large windows. This serene lower level is perfect for a second couple or a children's getaway. It has its own books, games, television with cable and DVD, and plenty of space to relax.

All bedrooms have lovely pillows and spreads, cozy comforters, and high quality bedding and linens. The entire home has many European Bed and Breakfast touches and amenities.

Wood is supplied for the charming wood-burning stove in the living room. In addition every room in the home has its own baseboard heater and separate thermostat for year-round comfort.

The open, sunny kitchen is fully equipped for cooking, dining, and entertaining with lovely dishes, table ware, and linens. Even the gourmet cook will find the necessary appliances, cookware, bake ware, and utensils for any special recipe.

The pantry/laundry room has a washer and dryer, cleaning and laundry supplies, picnic ware, beach towels, and ample storage space. Many cooking essentials are available for use by the rental guest, including spices, herbs, coffee, tea, sugar and oils, and much more.

The large glassed-in upper deck and the water's edge lower deck have Adirondack chairs, dining tables, both gas and charcoal barbeques, a gas chiminea for 'camp fires,' and a double hammock. Both decks are lovely spots for reading, relaxing, dining, and the constant viewing of water and wildlife.

The landscaped areas around the house have whimsical pieces of “exterior art” and a full herb garden. The acre of land beyond the house is covered with mossy knolls and sunny fields, creating a cushion of peace for the cottage. No road noise can be heard from this serene spot.

Other amenities of this inviting home include wireless Broadband (high speed) internet, satellite television (Dish Network), puzzles and games, a large library of adult and children’s books and movies, a DVD player, an Ipod dock, and a boom box.

Orcas Island itself offers many adventures, including hiking, sea kayaking, lake and ocean fishing, boating, whale watching, canoeing, shopping, beachcombing, and biking, as well as day trips by ferry to other islands and Victoria, British Columbia.

The island has many local fairs and celebrations, open-air music concerts, quality live theatre, flea markets, garage sales, and farmers’ markets.

Eastsound, the main village on the island, and a 15 to 20-minute drive from the Quinn Cottage through pastoral farmlands and beautiful mountain vistas, is a charming town with many restaurants, specialty shops, and a major super market.

A stay at the Quinn cottage leaves all visitors with lasting memories of adventure, escape, and rejuvenation. One of the Quinn Cottage vacationers said it this way: “As I sat on the cottage deck on the last day of our week’s stay, watching the sun slowly set over the shimmering water in front of me, I got a lump in my throat knowing that I had to leave this amazing place. I could see why the Quinns have been coming here for more than thirty years and still can’t wait to return. I knew that I would return as well.”

We invite you to visit this special island and stay in our own magic spot, the Quinn Cottage. Please check our website calendar for available dates. We look forward to getting your request by email. Please also feel free to request by email additional photos, Google Map location, as well as more excerpts from the Quinn Cottage guest book.

About Mary Quinn

We have been vacationing on Orcas Island with our five children since 1979, traveling from San Diego to the San Juans for numerous years in a motorhome. After the first trip the children would not consider missing a yearly Orcas visit. For many years we rented a barn on the island, storing our toys (boats, kayaks, berry pie-making gear), looking forward to trips of fishing, crabbing, hiking, lake swimming, and berry-picking. As Orcas Island more and more became 'home' to our children, they cried as we left it each trip, motivating us to find our own place on the island. So after many years of drooling over island property, we finally purchased our own piece of 'the rock' in 2004, making our dream of a Quinn Cottage a reality. Now our seven (so far!) grandchildren join in the trips, adding more fun, adventures, and memories about Orcas. We know that Orcas Island and our Quinn Cottage will continue to be a huge part of our family culture for years to come.

We invite you to visit and experience the magic yourself. Be prepared to fall in love with it as we did.

Jeff and Mary Quinn

Why Mary Quinn chose Orcas

After renting vacation homes for years on Orcas Island, we learned that the amount of sunlight and warmth varied greatly from one place on the island to another, greatly impacting our vacation experience. So we narrowed our search to only south-facing, sun-filled spots for our own home. In addition to catching both the sunrise and sunset, the orientation of Quinn Cottage gives it hours more of sunlight each day compared to north or east facing locations on the island. Even on short winter days Quinn Cottage gets every minute of sun and light available. This makes cottage vacation days longer and warmer, with sunsets and twilights that go on and on. The huge cottage windows and multiple skylights flood the cozy cottage interior with this lovely light all year round.

What makes this house unique

It is difficult to express the wonder, peace, and privacy found at our Quinn Cottage. The magic of the warm, sunny southern exposure, with the sunrise and sunset across water and islands, as well as the romantic parade of ferries and boats, is a never-ending delight. The number of land and bird species that can be watched from the huge cottage windows and wraparound deck is awesome. The off-season change of landscape colors and wildlife, viewed from the interior living space with a cozy fire, makes the best escape imaginable.

Remembering our own experiences of years of renting summer homes on Orcas, we have been determined to make the Quinn Cottage an inviting, well-equipped, and charming place for our cottage rental guests to stay. Nothing pleases us more than to share our magic spot with others, so from the lovely furnishings to the spotless condition of the home, rental guests can tell immediately that they have made the perfect choice for their getaway. We love reading the glowing entries in our cottage guest book as well as receiving the grateful emails after guests' visits. We invite you to become one of our next cottage rental guests so you can also enjoy this very special place. Jeff and Mary Quinn

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the Quinn Cottage guest book:

"The view is amazing! Our favorite spot was sitting just above the tidepools looking at the purple and orange star fish and listening to the water lap on the shore. The cottage had everything we could possibly need and felt like home. What a treasure of a place."

What a wonderful vacation spent in your beautiful home on your beautiful island. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. You can't beat the location, view and all of the "extras" you included. We loved spending time on the deck watching the wildlife around us and the sea critters below. So peaceful, the evening ferries were the best part with their lights reflecting on the water. So beautiful, peaceful and serene. We spent a great deal of time just enjoying the space. We picked up oysters from Buck Bay (thank you for the recommendation and for the oyster shucking tools), and enjoyed them with a fresh shallot and ginger mignonette, and some cheeses, salamis and Prosecco from the market at the Ferry landing (very close and a lot of great stuff packed into that small space), and the chocolates from the little chocolate shop in the east sound-yum!! The kids enjoyed the game selection and roasting marshmallows on the lower patio. When we did venture from the property, we had fun kayaking and hiking around Mt Constitution! So beautiful! Thank you again, we hope you'll have us back!

Best vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

Quinn Cottage is an absolute gem in a magical place. The house is serene, cozy and comfortable; stocked with all you'd need plus many extras (BBQ and chiminea, DVDs and games, ipod speaker, washer /dryer, tons of clean linens, local & long distance phone and wifi /internet (the latter two helpful as cell service is spotty at best). Perfect for one or two couples or a family, with three bedrooms (master with bath on a separate level) and spacious kitchen -dining- living room and decks with panoramic views of water and and nearby Islands. Close to the ferry landing, services and groceries, and easy drives to everything Orcas has to offer: scenery, wildlife, hiking, kayaking, whale watching, or simply hanging out, reading, or doing nothing (the best part). This place has it all.

This was our first visit to Orcas and the owners, Jeff and Mary Quinn, truly went out of their way to ensure our stay was memorable, from the welcome bottle of wine to the comprehensive Orcas guide. We felt like "insiders" the moment we arrived and quickly felt at home in the cottage, too. The kitchen and pantry are well provisioned to prepare meals, which we did most days, while enjoying spectacular views and an abundance of boats and land and sea animals. Hard as it was to leave the comfort and splendid views , we got out most afternoons, as there is much to explore. We ferried to Friday Harbor, kayaked Doe Bay with porpoises and other creatures, and hiked a trail in the State Park with sweeping views of the San Juans and snow-capped Mt. Baker. We picked blackberries roadside one day, which made for a special treat that night and next morning. While whale watching, a pod of orcas glided under our boat. But the best part was returning to the cottage each evening!

This was one of our most special, enjoyable and memorable vacations ever, a perfect combination of place (Orcas) and space (Quinn Cottage). We have travelled extensively, including rentals in Hawaii, Cape Cod, Maine, San Diego, Santa Barbara and N. California. We can unhesitatingly recommend Quinn Cottage as among the nicest places we've stayed, and appreciate more than we can say the many personal touches by the Quinns at their charming cottage. We will definitely be back!

A Magical Place!

  • 5 of 5

We just got home from a wonderful week on Orcas Island staying in the delightful Quinn Cottage. We did hike, bike, boat, and participate in much that the island and neighboring islands had to offer, but I have to say that the highlight of our trip was our lodging. It was hard to want leave each day to tourist around. We were comforted each day by reminding ourselves that we would have the late afternoon and evening to sit out on the deck at the cottage. The inside of the cottage was very comfortable, too, and had every amenity we needed or wanted. The set-up was ideal for our family of 5. My husband and I had the bottom floor "apartment" to ourselves, and the 3 kids (ages 11, 15, and 17) slept upstairs in the main house. The owners were a delight to work with and actually sent us the "Quinn Family Guide to Orcas Island" after we booked the house. It was as good as a guide book and chock full of information. But, once again, I cannot stress enough that the outside living is truly amazing! The kids loved climbing on the rocks at the shoreline to get close to the starfish and other sea life. They loved reading in the hammock and otherwise exploring the property. We all loved watching the beautiful ferries and other boats go by. Quinn Cottage is most definitely a magical place.

Wonderful location, very comfortable home!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Quinn Cottage for a week at the end of July and thoroughly enjoyed it! The location is wonderful--tucked away on a quiet lane, right on the water. The views from the living room, master bedroom, and patios are excellent! We spent most of our time out on the island or sitting on one of the patios--there are several patio seating areas. The home truly is waterfront--you can see the water from the sitting areas, or take the steps down to the water to explore. There's a dock in the water in front of the home, and in the evening, harbor seals like to lay on a log that floats near the dock--fun to watch, along with other wildlife and the ferries. The home is very comfortable, with everything you need. Appliances and such are thoughtfully labeled with instructions, so it's easy to figure out how things work. The booking, check-in, and departure process were all very smooth--the owners have their system down and make things easy. Highly recommend!

This is a fabulous spot and we can't wait to return. Beyond the absolutely stunning views (noted by many), the house was comfortable, warm, and had every amenity we needed. The owners, who were wonderful to work with, thought of every detail to make an excellent experience for renters. My family had an amazing, memorable vacation here.

Great tidepooling is fun at low tide directly in front of the house; it is possible to launch your kayak from the property depending on tides; just 2 miles away is an easy boat and kayak launch ramp and boat slips; Orcas Village is a lovely 2 mile walk or quick car trip away for groceries, coffee, or convenient island hopping on the ferry; owners share personal tourist information and help with trip planning; the cottage is well off the main road for country lane walks and total quiet and privacy; bird watchers find the cottage a paradise of discoveries with both native and migrating birds in full view from the windows and decks; children and adults are constantly amused by the fascinating parade of boats and ferries as well as seals and otters lounging on logs in front of the cottage; within walking distance is Killibrew Lake with exploring, fishing, and nature walks for the entire family; relaxing in the sun and enjoying meals on the deck are perhaps the favorite activities of all.
