1232 Sutter St. was built in 1914 using bricks salvaged from a city devastated by the 1906 Earthquake. This property was the former home and studio of Robert Hutchinson from 1961-2008. Mr. Hutchinson worked as a designer in San Francisco for over 45 years and believed in working closely with crafstman in many fields to create unique living environment. Many of Mr. Hutchinson's most dynamic pieces remain in the home, such as the burl redwood dining table. The facade was also created by Mr. Hutchinson in 1977 and is unique to San Francisco. The entire building underwent a complete renovation/remodel/earthquake retrofit, from basement to roof in 2010-11. The loft has a private entrance on Sutter Street and a private garage entrance on Fern Alley, which runs behind the building. As you enter from Sutter there is the great room which is compromised of a spacious living and dining area. The guest bedroom is also located on the Sutter end of the flat. As you go further in the apartment there is a guest bathroom which includes a vanity designed by Mr. Hutchinson. The kitchen has been completely updated and remodeled and fit for a chef. Toward Fern alley there is a master suite. Many elements in the master suite were designed by Mr. Hutchinson, namely the custom couches, custom built in shelves and drawers. There are hardwood floors throughout, exposed 'earthquake brick' walls and massive steel columns. The type of earthquake retrofit used on the property is call Moment Frame. There are four moment frames that begin in the basement and reach to the roof and are connected to each other across floor and ceilings. The flat has a 1,000 square foot deck with full Southern exposure. The deck is surrounded by precious orchids. There is a private garage included in the price and a washer/dryer. Although the loft is in the center of town it's peaceful and private. The vibe of Sutter Loft is relaxed San Francisco with a New York, Mid-Century Modern twist. WiFi throughout, TV in master suite and in guest bedroom. Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Lower and Upper Polk restaurants all within walking distance. The blessedly uncrowded cable car is three block away. This line whisks you to the waterfront and the Ferry Building. There are buses one and two blocks away from the loft which will take you anywhere in the city. A unique space you will love.

I moved into this property in 1996. Lower Polk is one of the most diverse and lively of all the neighborhoods in San Francisco. If you enjoy walking as a means to get to know a new city than Sutter is the place for you. Robert Hutchinson was an inspiring man who bought 1232 Sutter in 1961. He used his home and office to experiment with architecture and design. The latest incarnation of 1232 Sutter has minimalist edge grounded by the beautiful designs of Mr. Hutchinson. There are many pieces of furniture that were designed by Robert Hutchinson. Many of the art pieces come from his collection. The loft is not precious, it is made to be lived in and enjoyed. Its location allows easy access to the city's main attraction by foot, bus or cable car. If your staying longer and desire a car, there is a private garage accessed by a private stair from the flat. Ever since moving in here I would look out the front window to see the weather. Often there would be a person across the street capturing the brilliant facade with their camera. The neighborhood around the house is rife with hip restaurants that are listed in the house book. You'll love returning to the peace and tranquility of my home after a busy day exploring the city. My home allows you to experience the city in an atypical, urban setting. Be rest assured that every person who has stayed at my home has remarked that it is way more spectacular in person than in pictures.

What makes this house unique

The building is architecturally significant and is filled with unique furniture designed by Robert Hutchinson. There are art and antiques that create a sense of drama and excitement. The 1,000 square foot deck is a room unto itself and since the buildings are so low around my home the deck is in full sunshine all day. Most of the furnishing in the loft were designed by Mr. Hutchinson, or were collected by Mr. Hutchinson. The flat has amazing cross ventilation as my home takes up the entire second floor of my building. There is also a private garage which is entered from Fern Alley. You can walk, bus, cable car to every location in the city from 1232 Sutter. The building also has two great tenants on the ground floor that you may enjoy. There is an art and antique shop and a facial and body spa.

Robert and Steve were excellent hosts. They were communicative and made the check in/out process very easy. The place feels like a art gallery and definitely one of the best airbnbs we've stayed at.

Great convenient condo!

2 bedroom and 2 bath condo that is within walking distance to cable car and bus stops! Lovely unique furnishings and bedding! Kitchen has all the necessary items for meals or snacking. We walked to Pacific Heights and Russian Hill from the condo. North of California St. Is a lovely restaurant district with a multitude of selection for dinner. We will return!

Great place! Great location!

I had a meeting to go to downtown with a colleague. She and her husband and I and my wife stayed in the flat. It was perfect! We got Muni cards (available at Walgrens just across California from the Cable car stop) to save on the Cable Car and took the cable car down to the Embarcadero every day. The flat is very comfortable, spectacularly decorated and well equipped. Internet was excellent. We had a post meeting party for international colleagues which went really well! (Easy to clean up!) The one car garage makes having and using a car a snap (although we used ours only a few times, the garage was worth it!). Flat is convenient to shopping (Trader Joe's, BevMo, CVS, Walgrens) and a three block walk to the top of the California St cable car line (goes right past the Mark Hopkins).

Steve (Robert's property manager) is very helpful and up to any crisis (we pushed the wrong button on the dishwasher and locked the controls! Steve solved the problem in short order!). Deck is great for reading in good weather. Probably not a great flat for small children, but for us, perfect. We'd return in a heart beat!

GREAT STAY!

Beautiful, beautiful and spacious home! We loved our stay here. Walked to Fisherman's Wharf, cable cars/bus right around the corner. Few small negatives (far outweighed by the positives!): only one TV in small guest room (living room kind of large waste of lovely space), wasn't able to connect to wifi and master bath could use a privacy door. Owner was helpful and patient (we tripped the alarm a couple times!). Very clean and well maintained. Would definitely stay again!

Family trip to San Fran

We stayed here in March with my in laws from Italy. We had a wonderful and very authentic experience. The owners of the condo were very gracious and accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. There were six adults traveling and the two youngest used the inflatable mattress in the den and it worked fine for us. The condo itself is wonderfully decorated and a site to see. Centrally located, it was very easy to get around. The garage also came in handy since we had a rental car to visit the surrounding areas. I'd highly recommend this place to another visitor and might even check into staying here again next time we come to San Fran.

Best house I ever rented in San Francisco!!

My husband and I and our daughter and son-in-law just had the most wonderful stay at Contemporary Loft in SF and it is, by far, our new favorite place to stay in SF. We live two hours north of SF and we come to the city regular for shopping, concerts, plays etc and we stay at hotels and homes and we are so excited that we found this gorgeous, sophisticated modern living space in a vibrant urban setting that is also walking distance to all things SF.

From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and we knew if we needed help it was just a phone call away. We still can't believe we got to stay in a newly remodeled architectural treasure of SF with spectacular artwork and a spacious and sunny deck and that this was our home for the weekend. Just around the corner was Polk Street and Upper Nob Hill and the area was filled with great restaurants, a wide variety of shops, and a vibrant street life with people walking their dogs and sitting at outdoor cafes- it is just a fun and exciting neighborhood in SF-but when you are at Contemporary Loft it is quiet and feels like you are in an urban design oasis. The house is spotlessly clean and well-equipped. If you want to have an amazing SF vacation, rent this house!!
