Why visit Shanti?

Shanti means peace

Shanti is a Sanskrit word meaning peace, rest, calmness, tranquility and bliss. Its broader meaning is “inner peace,” a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace. Owner Elizabeth Medgyesy says, “Many people have told me in the past that this land radiates peace and tranquility. Perhaps it is because of the abundant sunshine – so uncommon in this ecosystem of dense Redwood trees. Perhaps it is because this is the site of the original farmhouse of the area, situated above monolithic rocks with three natural springs emanating from them.” Shanti means peace, and peace comes from being in the natural environment of Shanti.

Location, location, location

Coleman Valley Road is known as the most beautiful road in Sonoma County. Shanti is located directly on incredible Coleman Valley Road and only a short two-mile drive, bike ride or traffic-free walk from the lovely hamlet of Occidental with its shops, video store/internet café, famous Italian/French/Breakfast restaurants and locally-owned gift and organic food markets. The drive from Occidental to Shanti affords beautiful views of Mount Saint Helena and the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains to the east. But it is further west that attracts so many visitors. The remaining eight miles from Shanti to the ocean ary between a shockingly steep, narrow, curvy and spectacularly panoramic drive unparalleled in Sonoma County. Forested landscapes of a varied ecosystem of deciduous oaks, Redwoods and Douglas firs give way to sudden vistas of meadows and a sometimes fog-shrouded ocean that stretches into eternity. The drive to the coast takes about 35 minutes, but you’ll stop to take pictures all along the way. This is the number one scenic attraction of the area and directions are easy: Just take a left out of our driveway!

In addition, Shanti is neighbors with the highly acclaimed Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC), Western Hills Garden, Willow Creek Nature Preserve with its miles of hiking and biking trails, dozens of wineries, Osmosis Day Spa with its world-renowned Cedar Enzyme Bath, restaurants, cheese shops, bakeries, brewpubs, zip lines, kayaking and canoeing. Archery lessons can also be arranged in Elizabeth’s backyard.

The area around Occidental is gratefully and gracefully populated with ancient Redwood trees. However, these gorgeous behemoths impart a great deal of shade to many other residences and vacation rentals. Thankfully, Shanti is located on the site of the original farmhouse of the area due to its three natural springs. The hillside above the homestead was cleared many years ago for orchards of cherries, apples, plums and pears that have mostly died off. The remaining sunny hillside is our home site and also pasture land for our llama, sheep, goats and chickens. We are blessed with a glorious amount of sunshine interspersed with tall trees that impart shade to strategic locations such as the driveway and Shanti's private back deck. Occidental’s microclimate is coastal cool with fog in the summer mornings so you will be very glad to have Shanti’s afternoon sunshine, especially if you visit us in the winter months.

Shanti is doubly blessed to have both sunshine and water. Our water here comes from three natural springs. We might suggest that you use our spring water for everything but drinking if you are concerned about untreated water. We provide ample packaged drinking water in the refrigerator of the unit. We ask you to avidly conserve our most precious resource of water. Please no long showers or running water while washing dishes or brushing teeth.

Shanti’s Décor

Shanti’s décor is “Contemporary Bohemian.” No wood paneling or dark walls here! We have decorated in vacation bright colors like marine blue, apricot yellow, classic red and an orange that will knock your socks off in the Tantric bedroom! Fun, swanky, sexy and spiritually uplifting describes the Contemporary Bohemian style. Owner Elizabeth has traveled to 45 countries around the world and many of the eclectic décor, such as the Buddha statues and Thangkha wall hangings, come from her extensive travels to Asia. The bamboo tiger stripe floor is always a hit…it is so visually beautiful and exciting! Subtle lighting and Asiatic accents complete the Shanti experience. Elizabeth has completely redone the back yard of Shanti to be a private and peaceful place for you to relax in the dappled sunlight, swing in the Brazilian hammock, read a book or just nap and listen to the birds in the surrounding trees.

Shanti Accommodations

Your comfort at Shanti is of the utmost importance. To this end, we provide a luxurious queen bed with Sealy Posturepedic pillow top mattress, silky sheets, down comforters and plush pillows. In addition, a full sized futon couch in the living room can sleep two. Lastly, for those who want a bit of adventure, sleeping on the queen mattress in the camper is the answer. In all, Shanti can sleep six adults in separate “rooms.”

Shanti is now provided with high speed internet service, as well as Verizon cell phone service. Be sure to download the Sonos App en route to hear your iPod's tunes, Spotify or Pandora on the wireless speakers.

Pets and Children

Well-behaved pets and children are always welcome at Shanti. Children will naturally resonate with the natural world within Shanti as they play in the fenced backyard, or in the pasture with Elizabeth’s two spaniels Libby and Lucy, or in the Redwood forests that encompass a third of the 6.5 acres of Shanti.

About Elizabeth Medgyesy

Elizabeth has been in the tourism industry since 1991, when she started her own tour company, 'EcoTours of Oregon' in Portland, Oregon. After eight years, she decided to make use of her extensive knowledge of traveling in Asia, yoga and Buddhist philosophy by founding 'Spirit Travel,' during which time she operated spiritual pilgrimage tours to Indian, Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. Elizabeth is also a world traveler extraordinairre, having visited 45 countries around the globe. Her last two-month solo trip in 2013 was to Cambodia and Laos. In Fall 2014 she went trekking in Nepal for the sixth time with her sister Cathy. Elizabeth has finally decided to buy some furniture and (more or less) settle down for a time. She now lives peacefully with her two Field Spaniels Libby and Lucy, her two cats Buster and Princeza, her llama Cosmos, three sheep and three goats on her 6.5 acre Permaculture Farm. Shanti grows a host of vegetables which guests are welcome to harvest for their food eaten here. Elizabeth is also a talented Certified Massage Therapist who works out of her home studio and previously at the highly-acclaimed Osmosis Day Spa in nearby Freestone. She enjoys both road and mountain bike riding, walking on the beach with her dogs, all types of music, world travel and gardening.

Elizabeth Medgyesy purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Elizabeth Medgyesy chose Occidental

Elizabeth purchased this property because it had the two things she desired most: her own source of water and old growth redwood trees. She has lived here since December 31, 2009. The land was consecrated in ceremony by a group of friends who walked the perimeter in the pouring rain, blessing and leaving offerings to the four directions.

Shanti is her brainchild and operates only under the strictest environmentally-friendly guidelines, including water conservation, recycling, composting, permaculture landscape design, organic farming, low use of fossil fuels, 36 solar energy panels on the roof, absence of toxic cleaning chemicals and purchase of locally made products whenever possible. Shanti was so named due to the incredibly peaceful energy felt by many who have visited this land. Help us to add to this good energy, and visit us soon!

What makes this cottage unique

The biggest asset of Shanti is the 'peaceful, easy feeling' one gets from being here. We are void of light pollution and noise pollution; all is silent on this stretch of Coleman Valley Road aside from the occasional car or bike rider passing below us. Instead, we hear frogs up in the pond, birds chirping in the morning and an occasional coyote howl at dusk. With plenty of room to roam and run, this land is a dog's dream and Elizabeth heartily welcomes your friendly and well-behaved dogs to Shanti to play with her Field Spaniels Libby and Lucy. Play fetch with sticks in the pond or walk through our backyard to the famous Grove of the Old Trees with grandmother Redwoods hundreds of years old. If massage is your desire, Elizabeth can help you to work out those sore muscles on site -- its so nice to simply walk back to your room or the hammock in your private backyard afterwards! Couples massage can also be arranged with prior notice for you and your sweetie to receive and melt next to one another simultaneously.

Great weekend getaway! In such a tranquil setting and without the distraction of phones, televisions and computers, I was able to completely relax. After a day of exploring one of the incredible nearby trails, I even treated myself to an awesome massages.

Owner's Response: Dear Amber and Kristy, When I decided to make Shanti "unplugged," my goal was to create a spiritual retreat-like atmosphere that was peaceful, relaxing and away from the cares of the material world. I am overjoyed that this unique aspect of Shanti has been such a success with all my clients thus far. I also feel overjoyed that you took advantage of some of the Old Growth Redwood trails right outside of Shanti's back door, for I believe nature is the best healer. Please come back when you are due for another dose of complete relaxation or an awesome massage! Namaste, Elizabeth

Lovely, quiet, magical space

  • 5 of 5

The owner, Elizabeth, has created a perfect getaway for a couple. My wife and I (and our dog) went up for our anniversary. The details, accomodations -- e.g., an incredible bed -- and the space are very romantic, especially the hot tub at night. Really hard to beat warm water and the Milky Way. If you need anything, Elizabeth it there to help.

Owner's Response: Dear Ken, I am so thrilled that you spent your anniversary in the magical world of Shanti. The master bedroom is designed to be sexy, serene and spiritual with soft red lighting, glowing walls of color, art from my world travels, extreme privacy and quiet, and surrounded by magestic douglas firs and coastal redwoods. Next time you return I will have a beautiful and serene Japanese Garden in the back! I look forward to seeing you both again! Namaste, Elizabeth

Shanti is a Serene Dream

My boyfriend proposed to me on Friday night and we wanted a weekend to ourselves before we shared the news. We drove to Elizabeth's place late that evening from SF. She contacted him in advance to ask if we wanted eggs, bacon, toast and coffee for the morning, which we did and loved the next morning.

The guest cottage is adorable and vibrantly decorated, with a wonderful adjoining outdoor space for pets and a deck for drinking your coffee in the morning as you stare into the forest and watch birds bounce from tree to tree. There are sagging plum trees heavy with fruit which you're invited to pick and eat from as well as a little side vegetable garden.

We definitely took advantage of the full property, hiked around the grounds, enjoyed a few dips in the big hot tub in the shadow of an old growth redwood tree, and made the short trip into Occidental for drinks, dinner and bocce. It was the perfect base from which to enjoy afternoon trips to Marshall and Jenner, and the drive down Coleman Valley Road is absolutely gorgeous.

The whole weekend was a wonderful, serene success and Elizabeth is so kind, warm and accommodating. You will absolutely love it here!

Owner's Response: Dear Jessica and Greg, Congratulations on your engagement! I was so honored that you chose Shanti as your destination to celebrate your love. We have tried to make Shanti a very romantic getaway, with sensuous colors in the bedroom and living rooms, varied textures and aromatic smells throughout. I am always happy when my guests roam the land and explore all the wonder that the Redwoods, pond, fern garden, flowers and vegetable garden have to offer energetically. Please come back to celebrate your anniversaries with us and be a part of the changing nature of Shanti! Namaste, Elizabeth

Beautiful property, perfect hospitality!

Our first time staying at a VRBO property could not have been nicer. The owner is hip and welcoming, and has done much to make the property full of character and fun. Property is clean, well-appointed and equipped, with charming aesthetic touches. The owner was very interested in getting feedback on what could be improved (we suggested only tiny tweaks) and is clearly committed to the happiness of her visitors. We were totally comfortable (great weather helped) and loved the private backyard area especially for breakfasts and stargazing. Incredible stars in the darkness out here! We also really loved the hot tub.

The area of western Sonoma County is also very cool. It is super-quiet around the property, but we loved the proximity to tiny "downtown" Occidental with the top-notch French Bistro des Copains (2 miles), Freestone with its superb bakery and Joseph Phelps Winery (2 miles), the spectacular Western Hills Garden (1 mile) and Bodega Bay and the ocean (10 miles).

We would recommend this property and its owner highly to anyone, especially couples.

Owner's Response: Dear John and Lori, I so enjoyed your presence on this land called Shanti! It makes me feel so happy when my guests appreciate the unspoiled nature of this peaceful property like the darkness of the sky at night or the hollow sound of the wind through the trees while lazily swinging in our Brazilian hammock. Your easy suggestions (smaller dish rack, more hangers and ice trays, another floor lamp) have all been implemented -- thank you! I am glad that you savored much that West County has to offer and that you plan to come back to Shanti again! Namaste, Elizabeth

Total Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We spent Memorial Day weekend at Elizabeth's Cottage and we loved it! Waking up late every morning, reading under the tall redwood trees in the large, private backyard, sipping wine in the late afternoons before enjoying an excellent dinner in close by Occidental, need I say more? And yes, even our kids (12 & 14) were compelled to drop their gadgets and do some real reading for a while! Before I go, I need to mention Elizabeth our gracious host who brings a unique personal touch to the whole experience by dropping a welcoming note on the table or an activity advisory note on the windshield :-)

Go relax, you'll love it!

Owner's Response: Dear Alex, Thank you for being my first guests. You and your family were so kind and experienced as VRBO travelers that I was really lucky. I have made many of the changes that you suggested including more outdoor lighting, a trellis of Jasmine flowers, a Brazilian hammock under the tall trees and detailed beautification of the private backyard. I look forward to your family's return! Thank you again! EM

Occidental may be one of the least-known yet cutest little towns in western Sonoma County, if not all of Northern California. This small place, with a two-block-long main street is a perfect place for a relaxing escape, and it's only a 90-minute drive from San Francisco.

Founded in 1876 when the railroad went in, Occidental began as a commercial center, but soon became popular with vacationers looking to escape San Francisco's fog or Central Valley heat. Two Italian restaurants were founded a few years later and they still vie for diners, sitting across the street from each other.

Occidental is popular for quiet, relaxing weekend getaways. It's great for a romantic escape, or just to unwind.

Occidental is far enough inland to avoid the dreaded 'June gloom' that keeps oceanside communities under a shroud of day-long fog in early summer, and almost any time is a good time to go. On winter weekdays, you'll find it particularly quiet.

Don't miss

Osmosis Day Spa: Just five minutes drive from Occidental in the even tinier town of Freestone, this Japanese-style spa offers unusual enzyme baths, massages, beautiful gardens and other relaxing experiences. Make it your first stop and you'll feel de-stressed all weekend long. They're often open as late as 9:00 p.m., so for maximum relaxation make an early escape and stop on your way.

5 Great Things to Do in Occidental

• Browse and Shop: Occidental's main street is only two blocks long, but you'll find some nice shops along it, selling handmade crafts, interesting imports and nice art work.

• Occidental Farmers Market: Held Fridays from 4:00 p.m. until dusk, June through October.

• Musical Interlude: The Redwood Arts Council hosts regular chamber music concerts in the Community Church, praised for its excellent acoustics.

• Zip Through the Forest Canopy: Take a zipline through the treetops with Sonoma Canopy Tours.

• Wine Tasting: The area around Occidental and Freestone is coming to be recognized as one of the best places to grow pinot noir grapes in California. Joseph Phelps Freestone Vineyards have their own tasting room in Freestone. The WildFlour Bakery is right next door, famous for its giant-sized sticky buns.

Other points of interest just minutes from Shanti include Western Hills Rare Plant Nursery (Coleman Valley Rd., 707-874-3731), Wishing Well Nursery (Bohemian Hwy., 707-823-3710), and Occidental Art and Ecology Center, 707-874-1557).
