Traditional stone mountain house with stunning mountain views of the Pyrenees, located at the end of a quiet lane in a tiny, peaceful hamlet, with a delightful footpath to the village, approx 10min. South facing garden of approximately 1 acre of lawn and beech woodland. Shaded outside dining for 12, heated pool 6m x 4m. Conservatory also with dining for 12 (and drinks fridge) leading to main room which is divided into a well stocked kitchen with dishwasher, fridge, cooker, washing machine and smaller dining table and the sitting room. A large open fire and wood burning stove for spring and autumn evenings surrounded by comfortable chairs. The bedrooms are arranged on 2 floors. The rooms furnished with lovely antique French wardrobes and or chests of drawers. There are 3 double beds, 2 sets of twin beds and one bunk bed. There are three modern bathrooms. Towels and linen provided.

Nearest Train: Foix at 40 Kilometres
Nearest Motorway: St Paul de Jarratt at 30 Kilometres

The small village of Montferrier is located in the heart of Cathar country. It has an excellent baker and teashop, general store, Post office, tennis courts, children's playground and restaurant. The Cathar castle of Montsegur is only 10 minutes drive and the charming village of Montsegur has two excellent organic restaurants. The beautiful medieval bastide towns of Mirepoix and Foix are under 1/2 hour drive both with weekly markets selling a wide selection of fresh and organic local produre. Our local market is at the town of Lavelanet (15 mins drive) which is the centre of the local weaving industry with a fascinating museum and several discount fabric factory outlets. The whole area is crisscrossed with wonderful walking routes, taking you high up to the peaks and fantastic views across the Spanish Pyrenees or along the valleys in and out of picturesque valleys, the black Merens horses, sheep and cows graze wherever you go. The ancient city of Caracassonne is only 1 hours drive.

Peace in the Pyrenees

This property has a fantastic mountain-side location and is well laid-out for a large family group. The house is simple, rustic and traditional with all the equipment necessary for home-cooking using the wonderful local produce. It represents very good value considering it can sleep 12 people.
We enjoyed the beautiful garden with pool, and went on scenic hill-walks from the door. Out in the car we visited spectacular sites such as Carcassonne and Cathar castles.
Ideal for Francophiles/nature-lovers.

Great deal and can cope with lots of people

This is a big place with large grounds that can cope with a lot of people without costing the earth. Feels rather like a country estate as you sit on the terrace looking over the heated pool to the mountains beyond. It's right at the end of its own private road so there are no traffic issues: children can chase lizards or race around the fields in total safety. It's at a fairly high alitude which means warm days/cool nights in summer, but the climate is great in spring and autumn, short trousers and swimmable pool for nine months of the year. In winter the local council clears the snow to the house every day and there are ski resorts 20 minutes away, but at this time of year you'll need to keep the wood-burner and open fire running 24/7 to keep the place warm, with four feet of snow on every side.

Stayed there with friends in summer 2008. The view is wonderful and it's a very peaceful area. Beautiful fields and surroundings. You are in your own private space with fields and trees. The house is very comfortable and the terrace (and its view) for dining and general sitting about is fab!
Great for walking and hiking or painting or doing nothing very much at all.

A car is vital as it is somewhat off the beaten track which is of course a great advantage rather than a problem. Friendly unspoilt village 3 minutes by car with wonderful fresh bread etc. Or a pretty walk to it downhill (rather harder walking back uphill particularly if laden down with bottles of wine etc!).

There are one or two other properties near but they are absolutely not intrusive. You would not know they are there.

The only downsides might be:
a) the relatively loud volume of romantic cow bells in the field next to the house... Clonk...clonk...
b) the lack of nearby discos and night life (nothing - thank goodness) but if you need that sort of thing on holiday, then this is NOT for you!

Our second stay.Great location for hill walking,skiing and French pyrenees generally. Accommodation-authentic French style-like going back in time.Get away from it all location with superb mountain views.Found village of Montferrier charming and very near to Montsegur.Surprisingly not as far as we thought from Toulouse Airport being easy drive along dual carrigeway most of the way and actually the Toulouse ring road was the only slightly challenging part of the journey.Carreffour at Pamiers is really convenient to make "big shop"-you drive right past it- involves a detour of only 2-3 mins. Again easy drive to Mirepoix, Carcassone ok and skiing resort of Aix within 50 mins.1/2 hour drive to smaller skiing resort of Mont D' Olmes.Car is essential for getting out and about. Out of season this property is ideal for active outdoor people and during summer there is the benefit of a cooling pool.We brought plenty of games and portable dvd player which kept everyone amused.Good house for family sharing.Second time we went with my brother and being both a family of four we had a floor each. One final point we found it truly magical to be here, warmed by a log burner whilst the snow fell around.Unforgettable.
