**** THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR 2014, SUMMER-SEASON, RENTERS! WE ARE HAPPY THAT WE COULD SHARE OUR 'LITTLE PIECE OF PARADISE' WITH YOU. SEE YOU AGAIN FOR THE SUMMER OF 2015, BEGINNING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND! ****

Are you looking for a quiet hide-away in the deep woods of northern Michigan? A place where the two of you can just relax and get re-acquainted? The 'Tree House' is a unique, studio apartment that has what it takes for a great, couples, vacation. It has everything you need to enjoy life for awhile: King-Sized, Temper-Pedic style, memory foam, bed; cozy living room and kitchenette; shower; toilet; 32' high definition TV + DirecTV with all the movie channels; air conditioning; and a large deck in the tree canopy.

You are just minutes away from all that Michigan's 'Little Finger' (Leelanau County) has to offer. Close to swimming beaches, wine tasting, gambling, shopping, boating, and state parks. The Tree House is located five miles north of Northport, in 42 acres of cool, quiet, mature, Beech-Maple forest. Your own paradise... Hike miles of nature trails and watch the whitetail deer as they graze; or just relax and read a book, on your deck, while the leaves whisper to you.

Leelanau peninsula is a cyclists paradise, too! A destination for both bicyclists and motorcyclists alike! Also, near by, are beautiful inland lakes to canoe or kayak. Loons, eagles, otters, and other wildlife are waiting your viewing pleasure. Bring all the 'toys' up north and have a good time!

Sit on the beach, at the lighthouse, and watch a summer sunset over Lake Michigan. Go wine tasting at one of Leelanau's many wineries. Swim in Lake Michigan's cool waters at Christmas Cove. Nature at its finest in Michigan's Water Wonderland. A 'pick me up' for your soul. Ahhh... peace and tranquility.

*** Now with wireless, high-speed, internet service available ***

*** 32 inch, high definition TV, with all of the movie channels on DirecTV ***

About Tom or Kathy Larkin

Tom & Kathy are retired from careers in high school teaching and school social work in 2005. We now enjoy Bend, Oregon and Ruidoso, New Mexico, in the winter; and Northport, Michigan, in the summer. It is our pleasure to share our 'little piece of, Leelanau County, heaven', with our guests. When you stay at the Tree House you are family, too!

Tom or Kathy Larkin purchased this studio in 1990

Why Tom or Kathy Larkin chose Northport

Even though Tom was born and raised in Michigan, we first came to Northport when Tom's brother-in-law became the pastor of the Northport Trinity Church. This was in the early 1970's. Then Tom's parents bought the Captain's Cottage, in Northport, and his sister built a cottage in Omena. We were last, in the family, to build a home 'up north' (1995). We've been enjoying our forest home ever since.

What makes this studio unique

This unique area of the Leelanau Peninsula is one of the most beautiful places we have ever lived. We have 42 acres of mature hardwood forest to roam, and we adjoin hundreds of acres of state land to our west. Very private. We are located close to many outdoor activities (hiking, biking, swimming, boating, scenery, etc.) Also, there are numerous shops, wineries, casinos, and indoor activities between Northport and Traverse City. What a great place to just 'unwind'.

Guestbook comments from the owner

(Unedited from our guest book)

Tom & Kathy,

Already so many good things have been said about the fantastic Tree House, the area, the food, etc. (in your guest book). To add just a little more, we loved the apartment; the freedom that comes with coming and going without having to disturb anyone. Your property is beautiful and perfectly maintained. You both are so kind and friendly, to the point that it is a little disappointing to leave. I really don't think we could have asked for a better place, or time, to vacation. We thank you for more than we can possibly express.

Great spot for nature lovers and their hyper dogs!

My husband and I (early 30’s) weren't sure as we pulled in (the treehouse is a guest house over the garage, with the owners living about 200 feet away). Was this the beginning of a horror movie? Turn out, our stay turned out to be absolutely wonderful. Tom and Kathy have the perfect personalities for making you feel comfortable and at home, and we couldn’t have had a better location for enjoying all at the Leelanau Peninsula has to offer. Other than this rental and rustic camping up at the state park, there really are no other lodging options in the area, and we got full access to incredible beaches and hiking trails with virtually NO crowds. We felt like staying at the treehouse was a unique take on deluxe camping – an awesome deck with bird watching and star gazing, but with the comfort of a fantastic king-size bed and a kitchen stocked with tin foil, olive oil, coffee, the works.

Most importantly, this place is AMAZING if you have an energetic dog who loves to explore woods. With the gated deck and acres and acres of property, you couldn’t ask for a place to stay with a dog. We walked her (off-leash) around their property when she wasn’t already exhausted from hiking through sand dunes or cruising the downtowns of Northport and Sutton’s Bay, and it was ideal to say the least. (Usually getaways are a special treat for the humans, but this place is also a glorious vacation for a well-behaved dog with extra energy!)
Bottom line: Diamond in the rough. This place is high-demand due to repeat visitors, so book early (like, 8-10 months in advance) and it’ll be worth your while. As long as you are prepared for semi-rustic (even change your own sheets afterwards in lieu of a cleaning fee if you want) and willing to sacrifice a little privacy in having Tom and Kathy and their Jack-Russell terrier close by, it really is a great gig. Nothing like it (or even close) in the area!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review, Robin & Allan. We strive to make sure that, not only, our two-legged guests have a great vacation, but, also, our four-legged ones, too. "Well behaved" pets are always welcome. We hope that you will bring Gadget back for another romp in the woods.

Northport weekend

  • 5 of 5
The beautiful wooded and quiet location was perfectly situated for exploration of the Leelanau Peninsula. We explored five beautiful beaches in 3 days, enjoyed the harbor towns of Northport, Sutton's Bay, and Leland, and were impressed with the number of wineries and orchards in the area. The studio-size "Tree House" was the right size for us - comfortable, clean, and well appointed. The owners were accommodating and communicated well with us through the whole rental process. We highly recommend it to you!

Fun time Up North late in the summer season

  • 5 of 5
My fiancé and I and our 2 corgis spent most of a week in the Treehouse the week after Labor Day and had a great time. Tom was there to greet and familiarize us with the Treehouse and the surrounding area, then gave us some much appreciated privacy the rest of our stay.
While the Treehouse itself is a bit "cozy", it was perfect for our needs. While my fiancé slept in, I was able to bike down to town and pick up breakfast at the grocery store and bakery. Then we would make breakfast and head out with the dogs for sightseeing (Leland's Fish Town or Sleeping Bear Dunes), wine/beer/cider tasting, or simply walking on the beach (Sutton's Bay proved particularly agreeable to the corgis due to the lack of waves). Then we returned at night to make dinner and chill. Because it was after Labor Day, we usually had the beaches to ourselves.
During our stay the outdoor temperature dropped about 20 degrees overnight. Upon our return that night, we found that Tom had left an electric radiator with a note at the end of the stairs. While we didn't end up using it, it was much appreciated.
We all had a great time and are looking forward to returning.

Restful Location

  • 5 of 5
A wonderful place to hide in the tree tops! Very quiet with everything you need, comfortable and very clean. The deck is great for sun or shade. Tom and Kathy were helpful with directions and considerate hosts. A great value for the money. A car is necessary but beaches, bakery and grocery not far away. A return visit is a must for me. Thanks for sharing your wonderful cabin!

Perfect Honeymoon Location!

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Tree House. It was the perfect, secluded spot for a honeymoon - and it was close to local attractions when we wanted to explore! Tom and Kathy are great hosts who made sure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable, while also respecting our privacy too. We can't wait to return celebrate anniversaries!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review! We strive to be the best place for newlyweds to have a memorable beginning of their lives, together. After the stress of a wedding, the Tree House is the perfect place to relax and "unwind". We have had five sets of honeymooners, this year, and hope that more newlyweds will take advantage of our unique (& very private) studio apartment in the woods. Thanks again, and best of luck in that adventure called "Marriage"! -Tom & Kathy-

Peace in the woods!

  • 5 of 5
This was the most relaxing and vacation I think I have ever had, and, the first "real" vacation since we were married in 2009! The "Tree House" is the perfect size, the grounds filled with nature sounds and the beauty of birds and deer. Our dog loved every minute of exploring on your property and laying in sun spots on the deck. We appreciate all your hospitality, it certainly gave us the "base home" to explore Leelanau Penninsula, which, is an amazing example of God's handiwork! From the Lighthouse, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Peterson Park, Sunsets and Petoskey searching at Christmas Cove to Suttons Bay and Traverse City (and everything in between). It is like a place where time stood still.
