They were no shows upon arrival.
We rented this little place hearing that the neighborhood was an up and comer and we liked the deck
Unfortunately there was some last minute changes (not initiated by us) about how we would get the key, and the owner forgot to inform the cleaner about the time or manner we would be arriving to get the key.
When we showed up and rang the buzzer after being assured he would be waiting for us...no answer.
If we hadn't been carrying a cell phone and had access to email or the cleaner hadn't answered, we'd have been screwed. We had to wait for an hour with our bags for him, then another 90 minutes while he cleaned. It reminded us why hotels exist.
In their defense, the owners apologized, left us some wine and chocolates with a nice note, and let us check out late. Even so, they don't seem too organized, and I almost got caught with an exhausted pregnant wife in Vienna with no where to stay. I'm not too fussy, but that was unacceptable and stressful.
The pluses
-Right next to a subway station
-Very large patio with nice view
-Apartment/bathroom is clean
-The little cabinet kitchen is more useable than you'd think
Negatives
-Disorganized owners
-Apartment itself and bathroom are very small
-Patio and sunroom have a great view but unlike the apartment they are kind of dirty and unkept. Stained cushions, rusty chairs and a cat scratched sofa.
-Boring location
There's nowhere great very close-by to grab a drink or anything, and the immediate neighborhood is a mix of apartments, offices, warehouses, and industrial wasteland. You're sort of a subway ride away from anything good the city has to offer IMO.
As much as they made an honest effort to make it up to us, I can't recommend this apartment to anyone primarily because they don't have their act together for running this apartment and left us in the lurch with all our bags after a long trip, and the neighborhood isn't ideal for visitors.
Owner's Response: We totally and utterly apologize for any inconvenience – no show-up upon arrival actually happened to be a half hour delay at check-in, sorry for that - being somewhat a premier since for years, no one ever saw much to complain about.
Of course, this is not the 1st district, although far from being some industrial outskirt of ugly Vienna suburbia. We’re definitely not an hotel – that would set you back for much more, as in a 5/1 ratio, if on a comparable level – but in a value-for-money dilemma you might reconsider your vastly negative experience.
Concerning the rusty, unkept etc. situation, I can assure you, our rental apartment is as neat and tidy as it goes, outdoor plants are free to grow, summer would have them all over, herbs included free for discovery, and looking for a well kept plantage, we do recommend you’d rather checked into a junior suite next St. Stephen’s.
