The house is on one of three hilltop villages within sight (and a short drive) of each other. The beautiful village of Tamnies captivates the visitor with deer, flower displays and an excellent restaurant. Its illuminated church tower is a landmark at night. Marquay, with fresh bread daily, offers several excellent restaurants. The house, Combe-Claire, is perched atop Escamps, a hamlet of just a few houses, free from intrusion and visitor activity. An enjoyable 15 minute drive to the south lies the medieval town of Sarlat; a similar distance to the west is Les Eyzies, the ‘capital of prehistory’, while to the north are the celebrated caves of Lascaux, where images of bison and deer, perhaps ancestors of the herd that still haunt the nearby fields, are to be seen.

Notes: This superb large house/villa has been designed by the renowned architect, Francois Coq. The style has been inspired by the Chartreuse (Carthusian monastery) with all the beauty of a Perigordine stone house and the modern facilities for maximum comfort. The entrance hall leads to a very large salon (over 67sq m) which enjoys the fantastic panoramic view of the valley, there are large doors leading to the outside terrace. The house has many features such as stone flooring, beautiful oak beams and a large stone open fire place. A separate dinning room has also marvellous views and doors that lead to the terrace. The principle bedroom is located on the ground floor. A mezzanine on the first floor also leads to a large balcony. The house is full of light and is beautifully decorated throughout. The 13m x 5m, heated non-chlorine swimming pool has a delightful waterfall. The pool's specifically designed Roman steps and soft padded lining are ideal for young children.

Further details for this vacation house rental in Tamnies, France

Combe-Claire: Combe-Claire is a traditionally stone-built, country house/villa that offers all the modern conveniences to make your holiday comfortable and enjoyable. In spring the fruit trees blossom on the slopes surrounding the house. The deer pass by in the valley and wild boar occasionally forage in the local woods. In autumn the early morning mist gives way to warm sunshine that ripens the figs and walnuts. In the immediate surroundings it is easy to find an astonishing variety of wild mushrooms. Here is truly a place to relax, contemplate and unwind, yet it is superbly located so that all the region’s attractions can be visited with ease.

The Dordogne: The Dordogne or Périgord region is one of the most beautiful parts of France, well known to the French for its food and wine. There is a saying, “En Périgord, on mange bien, on boit bien”. Périgord is the home of the truffle and foie gras. Numerous local restaurants, with all regional delights, tempt the casual visitor. As a world centre of prehistory, the Dordogne offers countless caves for exploration. The world-renowned Lascaux and Font de Gaume, with their cave paintings and artefact's, are both close by. The national museum of prehistory, only 15 minutes away in Les Eyzies, provides a good starting point. Entrance is free on the first Sunday of every month. Within easy range, too, are chateaux and bastides – medieval fortified towns – which mark turning points of history, from Viking and English domination, to the resistance of the French Protestants. Across this region Simon de Montfort drove the Cathar heretics virtually to extinction at the foot of the Pyrenees.

Sarlat: Sarlat is one of the most fascinating and beautifully restored towns not only in the Dordogne, but in France. The atmosphere and appearance are of another age, with narrow, steep, beautiful alleys flanked by medieval and renaissance houses in honey-coloured stone. It has more historic listed buildings than any other place of its size in France and is the only town to be given three stars by the Michelin guide solely for the quality and character of its old town. One of the largest weekly markets in France takes over most of the town every Saturday. There is also a Food Market in Sarlat every Wednesday. Throughout the summer there are musical festivals and art exhibitions in Sarlat and nearby towns. In the nocturnal markets there are bargains to be sought among the local crafts, food produce and Bergerac wines by the light of gas-illuminated street lamps. Sarlat is only 15-20 minutes drive away from Combe-Claire. A visit to Tourist Information Office in Sarlat is highly recommended.

Other Activities: canoeing, hot air ballooning, adventure parks, many historic sites

Combe Claire

Review Submitted: July 21, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We spent around 11 months excitedly awaiting our family holiday at Combe Claire. The months, weeks, days and then hours were religiously counted down. We visited and re-visited the website and poured over the photgraphs. This was our first proper holiday in three years and we wanted a luxurious, child-friendly, home-from-home.
As we manouevred the hire-car up the narrow country road towards the little hamlet beyond which Combe Claire is situated we collectively held our breaths - surely this house cannot be as good as all the reviews seem to suggest.
The road to the hamlet of Escamp winds up the valley offering a view of the impressive twin gables of the house. This first glimpse of Combe Claire provides just the merest hint of what lies within.
The property is a spacious open-plan design, yet there is also plenty of privacy. The presentation is immaculate. Everything from the design of the building, to the materials, to the furnishings to the fittings appears to have been agonised over. No corners have been cut. To say the house is well-equipped would be a gross understatement.
We travelled with two small children (1 and 4). It is not the obvious things like the swimming pool or the sleigh cot that set this apart as a holiday home for children, It's the little touches like kids' cutlery/crockery, toys and games. (And CBeebies on the satellite TV provided some valuable chill-out time after a hard day's running about daft.)
To list everything that impressed would risk running out of superlatives but here is a list of five of the major plus points-

1. Location - combines the remoteness of the rural Perigord Noir with a 10 min drive to the nearest supermarket. Perfect location for visiting all the local tourist attractions.
2. Outside space - the pool is top-notch. There's also plenty of room for kids running about. The vegetable patch is well worth a visit. The views over the valley are stunning. The giant BBQ will make the kitchen redundant in the summer.
3. Inside facilties - beyond even our high expectations. Don't take the website photos for granted. This place is even better in the flesh.
4. The little touches - the extra fridge for all your wine/beer purchases, the plethora of guide books and novels, the wifi access, the air-con etc.
5. The owner - Farah has put so much effort and passion into this property. Her enthusiasm and attention to detail were part of the pleasure of holidaying at Combe Claire.
Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the time and writing such generous comments and your specific factual observations. We are also delighted that you all had a memorable time in the Périgord Noir and at Combe-Claire. As you say - and we totally agree with you - the location of the house is fantastic and the views magnificent. Numerous places of interest, restaurants and activity places are close by or very accessible from the house. At the same time the peace and tranquillity of the place is what is really needed for a restful and special holiday.

Amazing Stay in Serene French Countryside

sanman Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Review Submitted: October 30, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Tucked away atop one of the hills. It is extraordinary. As soon as we got out I realised it was the first time in a long time that I had heard 'silence'. The view of the serene valley and surrounding rural lands is beautiful. The house itself is very tastefully decorated and spacious. It was impeccably clean, well maintained and furnished with everything of very high quality. The ping pong table and mountain bikes were a delightful bonus! You can tell the proprietor, Mrs Turner, the owner, has really put her heart into developing the property and can sense the genuine hospitality at all times. We had day trips to Rocamadour and Sarlat, which are fascinating slices of French culture and history.
I absolutely, without hesitation recommend the property for a peaceful, elegant vacation stay. Our time there could not have been better. Thanks!

Our own little piece of heaven!!!!

Mazxx1 Portsmouth, UK
Review Submitted: September 27, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We spent an age trawling through the listings on Holiday rentals trying to find the perfect place for us to ensure we had a perfect & relaxing break!!! Combe Claire was the only listing that stood out enough for us to email the owner...Thank god we did......

Before I review the Combe Claire & the holiday I feel it appropriate to actually say a little something about Farah the owner.
Its very rare to find such a genuine & honest person. From the very first email to the final phone call, Farah was fantastic, giving us as much advice and help as we could have ever wanted. Thank you again Farah...

The drive to Combe Claire was stunning & was clearly wetting our appetite for what we were hoping was going to be something special. As we pulled into the drive, we were not disappointed, the house & its grounds are beautiful....As we unlocked the front door we were blown away. The huge open plan lounge, dining & first floor galleried landing made for a picture perfect house. We knew at that moment, this would be a special holiday.

The house is exactly as described & more so, & I assure you the photos do not do this house justice. Every conceivable aspect has been thought of and allowed for. Breakfast on the terrace, with the sun shining & the eagles soaring around the forest is a memory I will not forget...

I don't know how else to describe the house & the holiday suffice to say you will not be disappointed!

It was just me & my girlfriend on this holiday (although we were joined for a few days by parents & friends!!) and I would recommend the house for a romantic break or a social gathering. We hope to return for an Xmas break & will definitely be back next summer.

Its very rare I would feel confident enough to recommend somewhere to friends, let alone strangers that may read this review. However this is one of those rare occasions..........Combe Claire really is one of those little gems owned by someone who really cares about you having a great time & making the most of those precious holiday days!!

A Perfect Break

YogiBear1 South Hampshire
Review Submitted: December 31, 2008 Date of Stay: November 2008
This was my partner's first visit to the house, and my second so I couldn't wait to show him. You have thought of every convenience and comfort, Farah, and we made full use of everything for the time of year. Lovely freshly-picked walnuts and figs for breakfast, and some organic vegetables for other meals were much appreciated.

The lovely master bedroom enveloped us in warmth and tranquility at a time when we needed just that and we lit a log fire once or twice for added ambience as the snow fell lightly outside!

We ventured out to explore some of the lovely sights nearby, especially Sarlat and the caves at Lascaux. Combe Claire is in such a good position to take advantage of the brilliant surroundings and excellent restaurants. Best of all, however, was staying in and relaxing with super views and all the comforts one could wish for.

Many many thanks for making it such a brilliant holiday. We do hope to return as I am sure it would be very hard to better this in the region.

Exceptional rural retreat

Couple from Wales Carmarthen,West Wales
Review Submitted: October 21, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
All the previous reviews have said it all about this fabulous house, it's stunning location and it's extremely helpful and accommodating owner, so I shall just say - if you book a holiday at Combe Claire you will certainly not be disappointed. Every comfort is provided - it's like being a priviledged guest in someone's home - except the house belongs to you for a week or two!!
We wanted a bit of rest and relaxation away from it all yet within easy reach of interesting places and Combe Claire was just perfect. You can do as much or as little as you wish, walk, swim, cycle, play tennis or just read a book ( I particularly enjoyed the varied selection of cookery books and all the fresh produce available in the garden and the local markets). If you want to see the sights there are loads of great places nearby but it is worth exploring off the tourist routes as the back roads are usually very quiet and you often come across wildlife such as stags, deer, pheasant, buzzards etc as well as stunning scenery and beautiful villages. If you enjoy cycling but find the area around Combe Claire too hilly there's a great off road cycle track which starts just south of Sarlat and follows the Dordogne towards Souhillac for abour 23Kms. The food is wonderful - so many great places to eat , so many lovely things to do and see, a week is just not long enough - so be warned, once you've visited you will want to go back. Very soon!
