MAGNIFICENT HOUSE VILLA STUNNING VIEWS HEATED PRIVATE POOL AIR CON. NEAR SARLAT

Tamnies House Rental Photos and Description

5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sleeps 10, in the heart of the Dordogne, Aquitaine

This country house/villa in the heart of the Dordogne, near Sarlat, is spacious, modern and equipped to a very high standard. Both house and heated swimming pool enjoy a southerly aspect with a panoramic view of the valley. The large kitchen is well equipped to a very high standard. All five bedrooms have private en suites. The ground floor has the benefit of under floor heating; the large stone fireplace adds a focus of warmth in the cooler months. The elegant separate dining room, too, looks out onto the unspoiled countryside. The private and heated pool can be enjoyed in all seasons, with a BBQ for variety. Satellite television and high speed internet access are provided. There is a game room with table tennis. The nearby villages of Marquay and Tamnies offer restaurants and shops. The house, which offers seclusion and tranquillity, is perfectly located for visiting all the attractions that the Dordogne region has to offer for a luxury, extra special, romantic or family holiday.

Combe-Claire: Combe-Claire is a traditionally stone-built, country house/villa that offers all the modern conveniences to make your holiday comfortable and enjoyable. In spring the fruit trees blossom on the slopes surrounding the house. The deer pass by in the valley and wild boar occasionally forage in the local woods. In autumn the early morning mist gives way to warm sunshine that ripens the figs and walnuts. In the immediate surroundings it is easy to find an astonishing variety of wild mushrooms. Here is truly a place to relax, contemplate and unwind, yet it is superbly located so that all the region’s attractions can be visited with ease.

The Dordogne: The Dordogne or Périgord region is one of the most beautiful parts of France, well known to the French for its food and wine. There is a saying, “En Périgord, on mange bien, on boit bien”. Périgord is the home of the truffle and foie gras. Numerous local restaurants, with all regional delights, tempt the casual visitor. As a world centre of prehistory, the Dordogne offers countless caves for exploration. The world-renowned Lascaux and Font de Gaume, with their cave paintings and artefact's, are both close by. The national museum of prehistory, only 15 minutes away in Les Eyzies, provides a good starting point. Entrance is free on the first Sunday of every month. Within easy range, too, are chateaux and bastides – medieval fortified towns – which mark turning points of history, from Viking and English domination, to the resistance of the French Protestants. Across this region Simon de Montfort drove the Cathar heretics virtually to extinction at the foot of the Pyrenees.

Sarlat: Sarlat is one of the most fascinating and beautifully restored towns not only in the Dordogne, but in France. The atmosphere and appearance are of another age, with narrow, steep, beautiful alleys flanked by medieval and renaissance houses in honey-coloured stone. It has more historic listed buildings than any other place of its size in France and is the only town to be given three stars by the Michelin guide solely for the quality and character of its old town. One of the largest weekly markets in France takes over most of the town every Saturday. There is also a Food Market in Sarlat every Wednesday. Throughout the summer there are musical festivals and art exhibitions in Sarlat and nearby towns. In the nocturnal markets there are bargains to be sought among the local crafts, food produce and Bergerac wines by the light of gas-illuminated street lamps. Sarlat is only 15-20 minutes drive away from Combe-Claire. A visit to Tourist Information Office in Sarlat is highly recommended.

COMBE CLAIRE

  • 5 of 5
We spent around 11 months excitedly awaiting our family holiday at Combe Claire. The months, weeks, days and then hours were religiously counted down. We visited and re-visited the website and poured over the photgraphs. This was our first proper holiday in three years and we wanted a luxurious, child-friendly, home-from-home.
As we manouevred the hire-car up the narrow country road towards the little hamlet beyond which Combe Claire is situated we collectively held our breaths - surely this house cannot be as good as all the reviews seem to suggest.
The road to the hamlet of Escamp winds up the valley offering a view of the impressive twin gables of the house. This first glimpse of Combe Claire provides just the merest hint of what lies within.
The property is a spacious open-plan design, yet there is also plenty of privacy. The presentation is immaculate. Everything from the design of the building, to the materials, to the furnishings to the fittings appears to have been agonised over. No corners have been cut. To say the house is well-equipped would be a gross understatement.
We travelled with two small children (1 and 4). It is not the obvious things like the swimming pool or the sleigh cot that set this apart as a holiday home for children, It's the little touches like kids' cutlery/crockery, toys and games. (And CBeebies on the satellite TV provided some valuable chill-out time after a hard day's running about daft.)
To list everything that impressed would risk running out of superlatives but here is a list of five of the major plus points-

1. Location - combines the remoteness of the rural Perigord Noir with a 10 min drive to the nearest supermarket. Perfect location for visiting all the local tourist attractions.
2. Outside space - the pool is top-notch. There's also plenty of room for kids running about. The vegetable patch is well worth a visit. The views over the valley are stunning. The giant BBQ will make the kitchen redundant in the summer.
3. Inside facilties - beyond even our high expectations. Don't take the website photos for granted. This place is even better in the flesh.
4. The little touches - the extra fridge for all your wine/beer purchases, the plethora of guide books and novels, the wifi access, the air-con etc.
5. The owner - Farah has put so much effort and passion into this property. Her enthusiasm and attention to detail were part of the pleasure of holidaying at Combe Claire.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the time and writing such generous comments and your specific factual observations. We are also delighted that you all had a memorable time in the Périgord Noir and at Combe-Claire. As you say - and we totally agree with you - the location of the house is fantastic and the views magnificent. Numerous places of interest, restaurants and activity places are close by or very accessible from the house. At the same time the peace and tranquillity of the place is what is really needed for a restful and special holiday.

COMBE-CLAIRE - AN EXCELLENT BASE IN THE DORDOGNE

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Combe-Claire. We are four couples from North Carolina who had traveled together. The house was perfect for our type of arrangement as it provided the private space that we all need (5 bedrooms, each with own bath) while offering fantastic common areas. The kitchen, the dining room, and the spacious living room all served as gathering places in the mornings and evenings. We ate dinner out only two of the seven nights that we were at Combe-Claire. Generally, we had larger lunches. At dinner time, we set a formal table and enjoyed beautiful salads and ‘cold plates’ of local cheeses, fruit and sausages from the many Perigord food options available at the local markets and supermarkets. We found a local boulangerie where we purchased our breakfast pastries and baguettes in the morning. We used the herbs from Farah’s garden and cut roses and other flowers for the table centerpiece as well as other spots downstairs.
We and hired a guide for three days. We spent one entire day visiting several of the caves including Lascaux II. Threatening rain and cool weather altered a planned a canoe trip to visit Beynac, La Roque, and Domme; however, they were just as wonderful by car. A trip to the Pech Merle cave was combined with a visit to Rocamadoor. Sarlat (market day Saturday and Wednesday), Bergerac, and Perigueux are places we enjoyed, along with a stop in St. Emillion on our way from Bordeaux. One of our favorite places was a visit to Chateau Lacypierre (10th century mansion) near Sarlat. We were given a tour inside by the wonderful, knowledgeable owner who had been involved in the restoration. The 80+ year old couple still lives in the restored home.
We ate lunch out every day; half of the time we just stopped at a place that looked interesting and half with reservations. Our favorite restaurants were Le Vieux Logis Restaurant in Tremolat and Restaurant Labordier, in Tamnies. Combe-Claire was an ideal location to tour the Dordogne. Almost all of the sites were just a little over an hour drive away. We paid extra for heating the pool and for a mid-week cleaning, all very worth it in my opinion. Unseasonable cool weather prevented extended time outside; however, we spent time outside enjoying the sunsets and grilling on the new gas grill. Farah went out of her way to make sure that everything was perfect and was only a text away when we had questions. I would certainly recommend this house to anyone.

OUTSTANDING

  • 5 of 5
Combe Claire quickly became a real "home away from home" for the two weeks we were there. Somehow it managed to absorb comfortably our tribe of 12 (!) high-energy individuals of literally all ages. Family members had most fun congregating for various poolside and other activities, while at the same time, there is enough space for individual quiet-time. Combe Claire is attractive, comfortable, well appointed, situated such that one could feel "in the middle of nowhere" with most beautiful views and surroundings, while actually being but a short drive from the main attractions of the region. The owner is most minded and attentive to guests' needs and requirements, and is a pleasure to deal with. We will surely return some day soon.

A WEEK IN MAY AT COMBE CLAIR

  • 5 of 5
Combe Clair is an absolutely beautiful house - we were staying with an extended family group including our children and our grandchild and we all loved it. Everything is beautiful - carefully chosen and immaculately clean and it has to be the best house we have ever stayed in. We all enjoyed the pool and the children particularly loved the table tennis. The road to the villa is quite narrow and windy but there is very little traffic and the surrounding countryside is stunning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to write this review and for your kind comments. We were delighted to have you as our guests and look forward to welcoming you back before too long. We do our best to make sure that guests feel truly at home. The house is in the country, hense narrow lanes, has wonderful views of the valley and countryside, but so close to all the wonderful places that the Dordogne is so famous for.

WHAT A GEM! WE CAN'T WAIT FOR OUR NEXT HOLIDAY.

What a Gem! We can't wait for our next holiday.
  • 5 of 5
We've just returned from a week at Combe Claire and the house played a very big part in an amazing holiday that surpassed our expectations. Others have commented on how well appointed the house is, how thoughtfully it is prepared and how beautiful it is, in adddition, we found it a very tranquil base that was well located to explore Perigord.

While Sarlat is beautiful & worth a couple of visits, our absolute favourite day out was to Domme, the town is beautiful and the L'Esplanade restaurant was a real treat.

We look forward to enjoying this piece of luxury again.

AUGUST FAMILY HOLIDAY - SIMPLY WONDERFUL!

  • 5 of 5
We visited Combe Claire for 2 weeks in August. Two families of 4 with children ranging from 2 - 11, looking for a peaceful summer retreat, good quality accommodation and suitably located to explore the Dordogne. Both families were delighted both with the quality and cleanliness of accommodation and the peaceful location within the Dordogne. The property is perfectly set up to accommodate 2 families with separate bedroom and bathroom facilities. The lounge is spacious and comfortable while the kitchen and dining facilities were good. Outside, the pool was excellent, table tennis (in outdoor building) was very popular, while the elevated and south facing position provided for beautiful views and all day sunshine. Sundowners by the pool with the sun setting over the woods to the West was the best part of the day by far! Tamnies is off the beaten track so peaceful. It is also not so far from many of the key attractions and sights within the Dordogne; for us a perfect location. Main shopping was at Sarlat 20 mins away. Restaurant, (Logis de France 3*) called Labordier, in Tamnies just 5 mins drive was very reliable and served good quality food and wine.
In summary, excellent, couldnt have asked for more and has now become our second home from home in the Dordogne! What more can I say.

The house is on one of three hilltop villages within sight (and a short drive) of each other. The beautiful village of Tamnies captivates the visitor with deer, flower displays and an excellent restaurant. Its illuminated church tower is a landmark at night. Marquay, with fresh bread daily, offers several excellent restaurants. The house, Combe-Claire, is perched atop Escamps, a hamlet of just a few houses, free from intrusion and visitor activity. An enjoyable 15 minute drive to the south lies the medieval town of Sarlat; a similar distance to the west is Les Eyzies, the ‘capital of prehistory’, while to the north are the celebrated caves of Lascaux, where images of bison and deer, perhaps ancestors of the herd that still haunt the nearby fields, are to be seen.

Other Activities: canoeing, hot air ballooning, adventure parks, many historic sites

Notes:
This superb large house/villa has been designed by the renowned architect, Francois Coq. The style has been inspired by the Chartreuse (Carthusian monastery) with all the beauty of a Perigordine stone house and the modern facilities for maximum comfort. The entrance hall leads to a very large salon (over 67sq m) which enjoys the fantastic panoramic view of the valley, there are large doors leading to the outside terrace. The house has many features such as stone flooring, beautiful oak beams and a large stone open fire place. A separate dinning room has also marvellous views and doors that lead to the terrace. The principle bedroom is located on the ground floor. A mezzanine on the first floor also leads to a large balcony. The house is full of light and is beautifully decorated throughout. The 13m x 5m, heated non-chlorine swimming pool has a delightful waterfall. The pool's specifically designed Roman steps and soft padded lining are ideal for young children.
