Sant'Ansovino is a 12th century Benedictine monastery nestling in the breathtaking and tranquil hills of central Italy at the crossroads of Tuscany, Umbria and Le Marche. Over the last three years it has been lovingly restored into a luxury holiday home using original materials. As a result, the Monastery has been restored with an attention to detail seldom seen today. Any original feature that could be saved has been, and much of the work has been completed by hand. But Sant'Ansovino isn't a museum, it's a home where children play, and adults relax around the fire with a glass of wine. The owners, whilst keeping true to the spirit of the place, have incorporated their own needs into the renovation so that the monastery also incorporates modern conveniences such as en-suite marble bathrooms, ISDN telephone/internet links, a large American-sized fridge, professional range cooker, and a heated swimming pool.

San Ansovino lies about 4KM East of the beautiful medieval village of Apecchio. Apecchio offers a wide range of services including a bank (with ATM), several supermarkets, bars, numerous excellent restaurants, a post office, chemist etc. Apecchio boasts wonderful centro storico (old town) which sits elegantly upon a hill overlooking the river and medieval stone foot bridge. In the centro storico you can find Palazzo Ubaldini along with all its historical treasures. The recently restored Palazzo houses a world renowned fossil museum along with a natural history museum. The entire area is renowned for producing some of the finest white truffles (Tartufo Bianco) and during October and November there are numerous White Truffle Festivals where guests can sample traditional truffle dishes, local wines and regional delicacies.

Children at Sant'Ansovino: The owners of Sant'Ansovino have two young children of their own (5 and 8), and bought the monastery as a unique place for them to enjoy their holidays. The grounds offer idyllic exploring opportunities, and places to build dens, play football, and generally have the freedom to be children. To keep them safe the pool has been fenced off, moveable guards are available for all fireplaces, and there are two travel stair-gates for guests to place where they will. In addition the following items are available to make a visit more enjoyable for babies/children: A cot; A high chair; Plastic cups, bowls and plates; Baby and toddler friendly cutlery; Children's books; Children's toys; Children's DVD's; A LARGE OUTDOOR TRAMPOLINE; A tree swing; Blow-up football goal; A paddling pool; Armbands/rubber rings/ and swimming ‘noodles' Potty; Mattress protection for little ones being potty-trained. BEST AIRPORTS: : BEST AIRPORTS: : From the UK take RyanAir or EasyJet to Ancona, Forli, Rimini, Bologna or Perugia. Rome International Airport is 2 1/4 Hours away. From the Adriatic coast: Take the A14 motorway towards Fano, leave the motorway there and take the Super Strada in the direction of Rome. At the 2nd Acqualagna exit follow the signs for Città di Castello / Apecchio.

Ski: There is local family skiing in Winter on Monte Nerone approximately 5KM away.

Golf: There is an excellent golf course in Citta di Castello approximately 20 Km away

A magical place for gathering, hiking, relaxing

This is the real thing - beautiful, elegant, restored with great care and good taste. The whole house, including the pool, gives dramatic views in every direction; the facilities are good, bordering on the luxurious, and there are plenty of places for a large group to both come together as a whole, and split up into quieter areas. The location is excellent, giving access to the incredibly cute and well-appointed town of Apecchio; but also to some of the most satisfying day-hiking in Europe - fabulous meadows full of flowers clinging to the side of dramatic slopes with views that go on for a hundred miles across the wild Umbrian landscape. There are also good restaurants within a short drive; and the run to the hypermarket, which has everything a gourmand could want, is a mere 45 minutes down to the outskirts of Fano. The owners are friendly, and the local helpers are capable, accommodating, and speak English. Be warned, though. Don't plan too many side trips to nearby Gubbio, SanSepulcro, Pergola etc. The roads are twisty and take a long time to navigate. Much better, once you're ensconced in this stunning home-from-home, to stay and explore the glorious immediate vicinity.
Owner's Response: Helen and Tim celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary with a week of celebrations at San Ansovino and in the village of Apecchio (4KM away). They were joined by a group of 40+ friends and family members who came from all over the world to share their special day. Our local staff were able to help them arrange villa and hotel accomodation for their guests, a re-commitment ceremony, gourmet catering, live music and several group dinners in the wonderful local restaurants. Helen and her mother also enjoyed Italian cooking classes at San Ansovino as well as hiking locally and relaxing with their dearest friends on the travertine marble terraces surrounding the heated swimming pool.

San Ansovino is a great holiday location which is perfect for big groups of friends/family. We found it very well appointed and the setting is beautiful. I have no hesitation in recommending it.
