Ideal solution for us

  • 5 of 5
We will make our third visit to St Roch's in July 2015. We've visited many parts of the country, I moved to North Carolina in 2005, searching for a location that would allow us interact with all members of our extended family. St Roch's has proved to be a perfect solution, enough accommodation should anyone want to stay over, entertainment facilities for everyone and easy access to the beach for grandchildren and grandparents alike. We have, what we now call our gathering, on the first Sunday of our stay, all the immediate family, in-laws, ex-wives and husbands all show up for a relaxing afternoon. So far the weather has been very kind to us.

Like all older houses it could benefit from a little modernisation but that would probably remove part of the charm of this house. A not so perfect house makes us all feel a little more relaxed, someone described it as "quirky". We spend some time each visit wondering what the original design intent was, but no matter, we soon forget the architecture and watch a movie with the kids. Yes we bring our tiny projector and there is a perfectly placed picture hook to hang our screen.

We're all looing forward to visiting St Roch's again.

A feast for the senses

  • 5 of 5
Like a few of the other reviewers, I've stayed in this house numerous times over the years and hope to return for many years to come. I love many things about the house, but overall, its amazing sense of calm is what strikes me most, aided by the beautiful wood panelled walls, spacious surroundings, comfortable beds (several of which have electric blankets - what a treat!) and couches, carefully chosen furniture, furnishings and artwork, eclectic book selection and quirky details at every corner. Children love the 'hidden' door into the kitchen and the older (round) part of the house is reminiscent of being on an old ocean liner (or what I imagine an old ocean liner would be!). The dining room is beautifully decorated and the large table big enough to accommodate a large group. The round living room is particularly atmospheric and the perfect place to gather together a group of friends and share some tea (or wine!) in front of a roaring fire after a dip in the Irish Sea.

This is an old house and it has its quirks - if you are looking for flatscreen TVs, tarmacadam driveways and fluffy robes, this is not the place for you. However, if a big, beachy, fun house in the Irish wilderness with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore is what you're looking for, you've come to the right place.

A family home not a rental

  • 5 of 5
I've visited this house many times with family and friends and I've always loved it! I've stayed in groups varying in size from four to twelve as the design of the house lends itself to different sized groups. The original circular house clearly dates from the 1930s and is entirely lined in original wood panelling. The double height living room in the centre of the house is amazing!
There are three beautiful double bedrooms in the old part of the house with very comfortable beds, starchy white Irish linen, thick duvets and beautiful wool blankets. The kitchen, dining room and one bathroom are also in the old house. I use this part only when with a small group.
The more recent bedroom 'wing' has more bedrooms, two bathrooms, a massive utility room and a tiny sitting room which is useful for those looking to escape the crowd!
We generally use the beach to the left of the houses beach gate. The second beach often has lifeguards. The grassy path is about two feet wide and was a good source of blackberries last time I was there! There's a sweet shop just at the end of the path before the beach.
I usually do my shopping in Gorey which has a buzzy high street, a farmers market in summer and a few supermarkets.
This house doesn't feel like a rental property it feels like a family home. Grainne Vahey is always an absolute pleasure to deal. I couldn't recommend the house more highly.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your lovely comments ,Mrs.C.Those woolly blankets are chosen for their colour, and are intended to reflect the colours outside the windows, and bring them into the room.I am so glad you find the beds comfortable.A lot of research went into getting the right mattresses, and in the end we chose Ireland's best! The blankets are from Eddie Doherty, weaver, in Donegal town.
The Saturday Farmers' Market in Gorey gives one great opportunity to stock up on locally produced food[cheeses, meat, organic vegetables, breads, crafts] for your week ahead in Ballymoney,or present buying for those going back home.
Gorey is a great town,if you get there early enough, parking is available right ouside the shop!

Another fabulous stay

  • 5 of 5
I have visited Ballymoney a number of times over the last 15 years and this character-filled house never disappoints. The long corridor of bedrooms means it's a perfect location for large families or a group of friends and it's big enough for everyone to have their own space. We've stayed with up to 12 in the house and have had a ball Barbequeing, sun-bathing, swimming at either of the nearby beaches and even squeezing in the odd game of tennis. It's a real escape from the world, I'm looking forward to me next trip!

GREAT FUN

  • 5 of 5
This was my first trip outside of Dublin since moving over to Ireland. The house was perfect for it - lots of friends could comfortably fit inside and there was a great beach nearby. As well as being spacious the house was full of character - no two rooms were identical and the living room in particular felt like home from home.

Blissful Beach Retreat

  • 5 of 5
I've stayed at this wonderful house in Balleymoney several times and love it more and more every time we stay there. There's something very special about it. Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, its unique design centres around a cosy, perfectly round sitting room with an open fire! The rooms are simple but stylishly done and their wood panelled walls add to the house's charm. A narrow path leads down to the beach which is almost always empty. The sea is icy cold in spring but definitely worth a dip! This house is perfect for friends or big families and won't disappoint if you're after a memorable break by the sea :)
