My name is Sandra and I have lived in Kona since 1970. I came from California in search of a clean beach to lay on while deciding what major to take in college. Well, as it turned out, I stayed - never went back - and have loved living here ever since. I have traveled the world and must say 'there is no place like home'. When my children grew up and moved away I discovered that this home was too big for just me, so I made a vacation retreat of the downstairs portion, which includes the pool and yard and I'm so very happy to share this precious, peaceful place with visitors and share my knowledge of the Island as requested. I look forward to meeting you.
Sandra purchased this house in 1997
This particular area of Kona is perfect as far as climate and location. I have lived in many different areas of the Island, and this location is, by far, the BEST.
It's at 900 ft. elevation, which allows the great views and the temperate climate. Coastal living can be very hot in Hawaii, while we are enjoying soft trade winds to keep the temperatures perfect. I also love this location because there are approximately 12 world class golf courses within a short drive, and the harbor is just 3 miles away, the launching place for many water activities. We are on one full acre of lush flora and fauna, with no neighbors below us, which gives us all the privacy you could ask for.
If you choose to stay home one day and forego the many close, exciting, fun activities that the Big Island has to offer, this is what a typical day may look like. . . Wake up to the lovely sounds of many song birds, lounge around the private pool and soak up the warming rays of the sun while awaiting your turn for an incredible, nurturing, relaxing massage by one of Kona's most experienced and well trained medical Massage Therapists (me : )). Leisurely prepare some breakfast in the outdoor kitchen while enjoying melodious Hawaiian music piped out to the pool area as the palms gently sway and the wind chimes sing to entertain you. IF you feel like going for a little walk, take hold of the fruit pickers and roam around the acre; you may find avacados, mangos, papaya, banana, zapote, cherimoya and much more / help yourself.
We were there last week, and it is an amazing place. The pool and spa along with the gardens were great!!! It was also very convenient.
This was one of the first times I've seen a place online and then arrived to find it to be exactly as advertised. It's beautiful, clean, nicely located and obviously loved by Sandra and Ken.
This place is so peaceful and spacious. I am so glad this was the spot we chose for our first Hawaii vacation. The rental is excellent for just two people or for a family. I intend on saving my money to return with our teenage children! My husband said many times how thankful he was that we were not "stuck" in a hotel room. Just being on the property is amazing. The way the rooms are laid out will give privacy yet allow a feeling of togetherness. The pool was a little too chilly for me but my husband jumped in several times. I enjoyed the hot tub most. Although the owners live upstairs everything is very private and Sandra is very accommodating! We used the outdoor kitchen every morning for breakfast, everything needed is provided. Having breakfast and hot tea on the patio before a long day of excursions was excellent! Then using the hot tub at night to unwind was amazing! The rental is conveniently located and is easily accessible to any of the main roads to get around Hawaii. We loved the Big Island and we absolutely LOVED our stay at Kona Heavens Hideaway. I might also mention that Sandra has been renting for several years and she is very knowledgeable and helpful! I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful place. We have already recommended this rental to several of our friends and coworkers. We anxiously await our return!
It has been a week since we returned home from the Big Island and our temporary paradise on Anini Road. Sandra greeted us when we arrived, showed us around and then disappeared!! Some might think having the landlord in close proximity would be problematic. Not at all. Sandra was very respectful of privacy, yet left numbers at which to contact her. (we never needed to) . The grounds are amazing. I am a gardener myself and loved seeing so many familiar house plants in their natural setting. The fruit trees surround the property, there is lots of lawn to walk on or play on, and the pool/spa were wonderful . Almost all our time at the house was spent outdoors eating, laughing, enjoying. We did not cook a lot but every appliance, gadget, pan we could ask for were available in the outdoor kitchen. We did eat out at 3 of the recommended restaurants Sandra had noted in her binder. We especially loved Bite Me fish place, incredibly fresh marlin, ceviche. The indoors was spacious and not at all in need of air conditioning with the wide open but screened doors. It was also convenient to have our young adult children, out and around the side of the house in their own room. All in all it was a great vacation at a great value. We highly recommend this house and plan to revisit in the future.
I must start by saying that Sandra the owner was warm and helpful prior to and throughout our stay. The accommodations were a bit of a disappointment. My wife and I stayed here with two teenagers. While the hot tub is wonderful the pool is not heated so even though we stayed in mid-March it was very cold and not usable. The master bedroom being combined with the only TV and living area was a bummer and makes the unit feel cramped even though there is a decent amount of square footage. Additionally, the 2nd bedroom is not attached to the main unit. You need to go outside to get to the very small 2nd bedroom that has no TV. Our teenage daughter was not comfortable going outside at night and other than sleeping the 2nd unit really cannot be used for anything. The outdoor kitchen is extremely over rated. Even though we were very careful about any crumbs or food droppings as well as keeping all our food either in closed containers or in the fridge there were some large, nasty bugs we came across in the kitchen. Additionally, the kitchen does not have an oven or dishwasher.
Lastly, while the owners were very good about respecting our privacy they live right on top of the rental unit. On the days we stayed in the unit and relaxed we could hear them every time they flushed the upstairs toilet or walked across the floor above us. If you are using the pool, hot tub or poolside tables and they are out on their patio on the 2nd floor they are literally right above you and you can hear them and they can hear you.
In our opinion this is not a good unit for families with anything other than fully grown kids.
My husband and I spent a week at Sandra's gorgeous hillside home overlooking Kona. Sandra greeted us and let us know that she was there if we needed anything at all, but then she afforded us complete privacy during our stay. It was so quiet and peaceful and the perfect way to end a busy day. The hot tub was wonderful after a day of diving and exploring! The apartment is spacious and well-equipped. It was fun to be able to cook and eat a meal outside surrounded by the sounds of nature. The house is convenient to just about everything you would want to do and grocery stores are close by. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to take advantage of Sandra's massage services. We are already looking forward to visiting again next year. Thank you Sandra for sharing your home with us!
Public tennis courts, many world class golf courses, great shopping and many ocean sports available close to home.
Kona is known for its world-class marlin fishing. We are almost directly above Honokohau Harbor which has a fun restaurant for lunch and is also where the fishing charters and many other ocean activities (sunset sails, manta ray snorkleing and diving cruises, zodiak tours, whale watching etc.) are based. There are some wonderful white sand beaches and tide pool areas within a 10 or 15 minute drive. Costco is also just about a 5 minute drive and is a great place to stock up for your vacation and it is usually the most economical place to buy gas.
