Our chalet is situated in this fantastic ski and spa resort, perched high in the Valais. It is in a fabulous position with uninterrupted mountain views. The village of Ovronnaz is a real Swiss mountain village of beautiful chalets, where local people still retain their traditional way of life - but it is also a modern ski and thermal spa resort. Our chalet’s interior is warm and inviting. Upstairs - a lovely open fire in the lounge area, a spacious dining area, a luxury fitted kitchen, guest toilet and a super sun lounge - surrounded by a south and east facing terrace, perfect for lounging or eating outside . Downstairs there are 3 bedrooms - double, twin and single - a luxurious bathroom with bath and shower and a utility room with washer and dryer. The chalet is located on a quiet hillside lane where there is parking for one car only. Within 5 minutes walk, several local hiking routes; within 15 minutes walk, the village and thermal pool
Skiing, Boarding and Winter sports: Ovronnaz is a winter sports resort, for sports enthuiasts and also those who just love to be in the mountains on a sunny winter's day. You can ski and snowboard on wonderfully scenic slopes, cross-country ski on high Alpine tracks, snow show through the woods or walk through a very scenic village. Ovronnaz is a medium sized ski resort with 9 ski lifts (2 chair lifts, 5 surface lifts) that offers skiers and boarders an incredible 1336 metres (4382 feet) of vertical descent. Ovronnaz has 10 pistes with a total length of 30 kilometers (19 miles) and there are also 25 kilometers (16 miles) of cross country ski trails. For snowboarders, there is a terrain park. A proportion of the pistes at Ovronnaz are covered by snowmaking. The nearest airport is at Geneva.
There are 2 ski schools both located in the village centre offering skiing and snowboarding lessons. Hire shops are located nearby. The beginners' slope is right in the centre of the village, conveniently located for the local bars and restaurants so non-skiing adults can watch progress but escape for a 'vin chaud' as well. After the first few days, beginners can move on to the higher slopes, reached by chair lift. The main restaurant for the slopes is located right by the top of the chairlift and is easily accessible to non-skiers and skiers alike. The cross country ski tracks are within walking distance of our chalet, as are the winter walking and snow-shoe trails
Thermalalp – Thermal and Wellness Spa: The Swiss really understand how to make folks relax - put them in a beautiful mountain environment and let them look around! In Ovronnaz, you can do this whilst you relax in the themal pools, open all year round. In winter, OVronnaz is unique. When you buy your lift pass, you can chose to include entry to the thermal spa and pools – and at the end of a hard day on the pistes, lie back in one of the 3 naturally heated pools, indoor and out, enjoying the crystal clear views to the mountains all around. Unlike most “spa” resorts, Ovronnaz attracts a young and family clientele. Kids will adore the outdoor pools – naturally heated to 34-36°. As well as the Jacuzzi’s, whirlpools and water jets, the centre also offers a fantastic range of health and beauty therapies – early booking advisable. The thermal centre is open all year round which means the village is always inviting and hospitable, no matter what month you visit. (And, no – the water isn’t smelly and you don’t drink it!)
Relaxation, summer sun, sports, wine and weddings!: My favourite comment from a guest was: 'The view at dawn from the sun room of the chalet over the surrounding Alps was so amazing we had to get up early every morning to watch.' You could gaze at the mountains all day but then you would miss the walking, mountain sports and boundless other attractions. Take a mountain railway through the Alps to Chamonix or Zermatt. Children will love the thrill of real mountain adventure playgrounds which are found in the surrounding resorts. Wine-lovers will enjoy being right in the centre of the Swiss wine-growing region with it’s many opportunities for a “dégustation de vins ”! Mountain biking enthusiasts will find more than 50 kms of trails set in stunning scenery. Or simply wander the slopes around the chalet, enjoying glorious views over glaciers, mountains and valleys, enjoying nature at its best. New this year - 'Pass Valais Central' which offers unlimited access to the surrounding area - including the mountain railways and cable cars!
Both the chalet and the surroundings could not be more charmingly 'Swiss'!
Entry to the wonderful thermal pools can be included in the ski pass. Lying back in the outdoor pools, looking out over the Alps as the sun sets...... Unbeatable!
It is a long, steep and winding drive up to Ovronnaz. Chalet Brown is nestled into the mountain side and our first views from the balconies are stunning. The chalet has an instant welcoming and relaxing feel - traditional but with every mod con needed to make a home from home - a small but well equipped kitchen, barbeque, a monster of a patio heater (which we didn't need as our evenings spent on the balcony were warm), CD player and a large, deep bath in which to soak away aches and pains after a long day mountain walking. There is even a fondue set, complete with instructions! In fact, Vari and Jamie have gone to a lot of trouble to supply detailed information on how to use everything in the chalet and to make the stay as smooth as possible. Ovronnaz contains all the basic shops, cafes and restaurants required and has a friendly atmosphere without feeling too touristy. There is a wealth of fabulous mountain walking to suit all levels on the doorstep, often through beautiful meadows filled with wild flowers - and all with continuously breathtaking views. The icing on the cake is the local Thermal Spa, a great way to relax after walking or on a cloudy day (of which we only had one). There is no need to travel further afield, except that one would miss the numerous nearby attractions that are well worth the drive - Sion, Grade Dixence and, an absolute must, taking the cable car up to Plein Morte from Crans Montana - to name just a few.
Vari and Jamie could not have been more helpful - even taking the trouble to email friends for recommendations for a suitable venue for a special celebration. The care taken to ensure you have an enjoyable stay is unsurpassed. A very special place and a truly magical holiday. A must for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, mountians and walking. Thank you to Vari and Jamie.
Our family of five (two adults and three children 7, 5 and 3) spent a week at the chalet over Christmas. It was extremely comfortable, clean, and well maintained. The open fire was a real treat, and the deck was a lovely place to watch the sun set over the mountains with a drink in hand. We were able to cook a Christmas feast in the well equipped kitchen. The town of Ovronnaz is a delight - very friendly, with all the shops you need to buy the basic food supplies, and a great thermal pool complex. We enjoyed hikes from a nearby base, as well as day trips to the medieval town of Sion and the ski town of Zermatt. Highly recommend this lovely chalet.
We spent a lovely week at the Brown chalet in Ovronnaz. The chalet was as described, perfectly fitted for a family with two small children, including a baby cot and high chair. The chalet is really cosy with modern well appointed kitchen and bathroom. The sun lounge was a definite plus - a perfect playroom for the kids.
We enjoyed Ovronnaz's skiing and sledging - being very lucky with wonderful snow and weather, as well as the thermal baths. A perfect place for a very nice, relaxing week!
This chalet contains everything you need for a very comfortable stay in the Swiss mountains. Balcony gave great views of the beautidul mountains at all times of day - truly spectacular. My husband loved the BBQ /smoker and wished he could take it home! Ovronnaz is a compact village, we particuarly enjoyed the Spa in the afternoons after a morning hike. In the summer months you just have to grips with the openeing times!
We had a wonderful week in the Brown chalet. We enjoyed the comfortable house and noticed the personal touch which made it very cosy. Especially the couch in the sun lounge was much loved for reading and relaxing or just looking out to view on the mountains!
Maybe the only disappointing thing was the sun disappeared behind the mountain around 5 o'clock.
In the winter months - although surrounded by well-known ski resorts such as Verbier/The 4 valleys and Crans Montana, Ovronnaz has - until now - been a secret the Swiss have managed to keep to themselves. The Ovronnaz ski slopes are a few minutes by car or can be reached by a navette bus which stops just 2 minutes walk from the chalet. In summer you will find the chalet is situation on a sunny shelf, above the main wine growing area in Switzerland. The road to the village winds up through the vine yards and as you reach the higher meadows you will begin to hear the sound of cow bells and see the beautiful mountain scenery above. The chalet is in a wonderful position, between alpine meadows and mountain. The thermal spa centre and village are within walking distance but you can also take the local bus.
Other Activities: Thermal spa centre with wellness and beauty therapies. Wine-growing area
Ski: The resort of Ovronnaz, is renowned for its wonderful micro-climate, sparkling sunny days and an abundance of snow – ski uplift rises from 1350 metres to 2,500 metres. The runs are 30% beginner, 50% intermediate and 20% expert, with the longest run over 1000 metres in length. Uplift opens in late November and continues until after Easter. For cross country skiers there are 3 “loops” totaling 25 km which are for once, not located as normal, down in the valley - but on a high alpine shelf with fantastic views down and out over the Rhone valley. There are also 20 km of marked footpaths and an 11 km snowshoeing trails. All this comes a fraction of the cost of other better known ski resorts - and even more unique - you can include entry to the thermal baths in your lift pass. Day trips to enjoy other resorts in the area - Verbier (via La Tzoumaz) - about 50 minutes, Crans Montana - about 1 hour, the Portes du Soleil area - about 1.30 minutes.
