What's in the area?: With just a 40 minute drive north west to the Atlantic coast you will find the sunny beaches of Fouras and Chatelaillon Plage. And to the south west, still just 40 minutes, there are the beautiful beaches of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer. With many more but unfortunately we haven’t visited them all!

With Cognac a 35 minute drive, tours around one of the famous Martell, Hennessy or Remy Martin distilleries are a must.

Just 50 minutes from the beautiful coastal town of La Rochelle, a must for any shopper! La Rochelle has a wonderful ambience with many restaurants bursting on to the pavements. Seafood is of course the speciality. Just 60 minutes to the stunning Ile de Re. About Catherine Piner

We arrived here with our young family in 2003 with the intention of giving it a go for 5 years and we're still here!

We came here from Surrey, so the pace of life has slowed down considerably! So not only is this a great holiday destination it's a great place to live too.

Both our children love it, they've only known the French school system so are far more fluent than either of us!

Catherine Piner purchased this barn in 2003

Why Catherine Piner chose Crazannes

When we first saw this property and the beautiful garden we knew this had to be the one.

The huge draw was the the fact that even though the 'gites' were little more than shells used for storage and garaging we could see they had massive potential especially as they were completely independent of the main house and each other. So each house would have it's only private space.

The location is perfect, not a huge drive from the UK and when our guests arrive loads of interesting places to visit including some amazing beaches within a short drive.

It was a top priority that our guests would be comfortable as although generally the climate is warm and sunny it's inevitable that some days may not be so bright.

What makes this barn unique

The thing I remember most was during our second viewing of the property, we were sitting on the terrace and could hear the church bell chime midday, beautiful! So very peaceful and our girls have often said how lovely it is to sit and listen to the birds, as there are so many trees in the garden there are certainly no shortage of those!

Beautiful gite in an idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at la petite bergerie - a beautifully decorated and well maintained property which had everything you could ever want, including an excellent pool and a play area for the children. Centrally located for everything we wanted to see, including the beaches. We would happily recommend this property.

Heerlijk huisje, top met kinderen!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful gites in a lovely location

  • 4 of 5

Just back from two weeks in the beautiful 'LaBergerie' in Crazannes. Very tastefully decorated and very well equipped - Coolbox, every kitchen utensil you might need, BBQ area outside, toys, books and dvd's for the kids. Our two and four year old had such fun in the gorgeous pool and playing in the garden (and we could relax knowing they were safe outside. La Bergerie is a great base from which to drive to so many great places, Beaches in Royan, Zoo, Ile de Re/Oleran, Cognac etc. It was so nice to spend some days just by the pool and relaxing in the garden. Delighted that we found such a gem of a place and it certainly helped make our holiday in France a great one.

Thanks again to you all)

I would not use the word "outstanding" lightly but this accommodation really was superb. Driving up to the gite through a lovely wooded area gave us a glimpse of what was to come. The gite is very well maintained inside and out and the individual rooms have been well planned and beautifully decorated. The whole ground floor is very welcoming divided into a large comfortable sitting room and a really excellent kitchen/diming area. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with plenty of everything for eating, drinking, cooking and BBQing The bedrooms are very attractive and comfortable with very nice linen and the bathrooms are excellent. Outside is a very nice eating area and also a lovely swimming pool and a safe playing area for small children if needed. The surrounding area is very attractive and we had good trips to local markets and pretty villages and also further afield to La Rochelle and a very nice beach at Fouras. well worth a visit. The owners are on hand if required and are very friendly and welcoming and we will certainly be recommending this lovely gite to friends and family.

Wonderful, perfect place to stay, we will return!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family holiday at la Petite Bergerie. The gite has everything you could need with bags of character. Extremely comfortable and clean. We stayed with our young family and it was all very easy with lots of equipment for our baby so we didn't need to fill up our car with all the gear.

With its quiet garden it would also be perfect for a quiet getaway so we hope to return maybe if we can find a babysitter!

Great restaurants and not too long a journey to some great beaches.

We would definitely recommend la Petite Bergerie.

Easter break

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at La Petite Bergerie over the Easter period. It was a much needed break in an area of France we love. When we looked at the map before booking, it seemed a great location, being a stone's throw from a main autoroute going straight to the coast. However, in our excitement, we failed to notice that the access onto that autoroute was half an hour away! It was entirely our own fault. So, actually we were much more remote than it seemed on the map.

The gite was clean and well presented. It was obvious a lot of thought and attention had gone into the presentation and the preservation of "character," often at the expense of practicality. There were many untreated wooden surfaces. Also, we were unaware, before arrival, that both doorways into the main bedrooms were of reduced head height, around 5ft 2-3in. There was no mention of that in the details and not before or after booking. Running around after young children and being distracted, we consequently suffered from bruised heads and on occasion resulting in headaches and dizziness, though thankfully, nothing too lasting for us.

We were disappointed to note that the garden was not secure for children to play in. The drive was open straight onto the road so the children had to be closely supervised the whole time they were outside. Unfortunately, that meant less of a relaxing time for us.

One of our pre-requisites when choosing somewhere to stay is an internet connection. It is important for us to stay connected. The wifi at the gite was at best very intermittent, achieving speeds reminiscent of dial-up and that was only available at one end of the kitchen, pressed against the window. We spent a fair while balancing laptops against that window.

The log fire in the lounge was great and was a welcome bonus as the evenings turned quite cool. There was a decent supply of wood and firelighters and we had a good fire going on a number of evenings.

In the main double bedroom, the bed was probably antique and extremely creaky with the mattress very worn and thin. The children's room was adjacent.

The drive back to the UK with two little ones went relatively smoothly. However, that evening we were shocked to receive an email from Catherine, containing a rather creative list of damages, in addition to a broken wine glass which we reported. It had us totally flummoxed. We wouldn't have minded paying more upfront for the stay, if only to avoid the pettiness and sour taste at the end.

Owner's Response: Firstly thank you so much for posting a review, which whether positive or negative is always extremely useful for our guests. We usually respond personally to each review rather than post a reply but felt we should respond here to some of the points raised. It should be known that this is only the third time in 10 years of running our 2 gites that we have had to make a claim on the damage deposit, as the damage to the gite was quite extensive. Although on this occasion we could rectify most of the damage, there was one item which we felt should be paid for and replaced by our guests. We always ask our guests to notify us immediately if there are any problems and we always make a point of checking with our guests after their arrival and during their stay to ensure everything is alright. We did this on numerous occasions and were told everything was fine. We always aim to refund the damages deposit as quickly as possible which is why unfortunately our guests returned home to find the email waiting for them. To reassure potential guests we will address all issues raised: - The A10 autoroute does pass within a few km of Crazannes (which is only noticeable on very few occasions) the access junctions thankfully, are at Saintes and St Jean d’Angely and not any nearer! - The gardens are very secure for children with gates at the entrance for the gites which can easily be closed by our guests. The pool is also securely fenced with a lockable gate. - As this is rural France internet access is indeed patchy at best, we do ask our guests to limit the number of devices. On this occasion up to 20 (!) devices were logged on from both gites and our home. We would like to hope when staying in our gites you are having a well earned break and would only wish to use the internet for checking emails. - In all replies to enquiries for our gites we include a link to our website which clearly indicates the low beams in the doorways of the two double bedrooms. - The antique double bed is indeed low but has a new mattress (so we are a little confused by the point made). - All wooden surfaces are waxed but the point has been duly noted and we will provide coasters. We do provide a child’s table with a cover at which they can play and ‘colour in’. As you can see from our other reviews we have never had any comments / complaints regarding the practicality, or suitability of of our gite , with guests remarking more on the quality, authenticity and comfort of our gites.
