Photos and Description of the Anlhiac vacation barn rental Elegant barn conversion, central heating, on walking trail. Pets welcome.

This is the place to renew yourself! For singles, couples and small families, this secluded, wonderfully peaceful place will re-charge your batteries. Its atmosphere enchants young and old alike. Spacious and well furnished, the barn is situated on the edge of the village with open views over the Auvezere valley. The door to the back of the barn opens out onto a private terrace overlooking the garden and valley, ideal for al fresco dining. We invite our guests to share a pool with the local hotel in Cherveix Cubas, minutes' drive away. There is an excellent restaurant/cafe in the village, and another next door to the hotel/swimming pool. Ideally located to explore the region's rich cultural history i.e. prehistoric cave paintings. The varied countryside offers something to do in every season - including harvesting our walnuts, (and eating them green), and making oil at the local press with Gaston. Marked walks start from the barn. Member of 'Slow Food' org. Meals on request.

This very pretty, peaceful village is just off the D704, one hour due south from Limoges. Totally unspoilt, you look out across meadows which haven't changed in centuries. It is well placed to visit the prehistoric caves (an hour's drive), and also Perigueux, Sarlat, and Brive. Hautefort and Excideuil with their famous chateaux are ten minutes' drive from the house. Cherveix Cubas with a range of shops, post office, hotel, cafe and excellent restaurant is 3 minutes' drive. We have an arrangement with the hotel to use their excellent pool. Access by a side gate. The restaurant next door is excellent and you may order a meal to take away. Walkers' paradise as the barn is right on a trail which intersects with the GR trails. Maps available and bikes for the energetic. Championship 9 hole golf course at Chateau Essendieras, with resident pro, 5 minutes' drive from the barn.

Notes: When restoring the barn I invited the best local artisans to work with me. I wanted to keep its unique character, but also to create a space with an atmosphere all of its own, and which reflects contemporary needs. I think we succeeded in creating a special ‘environment’ which is totally in harmony with the surroundings, and which invites relaxation and peace. The libraries provide food for thought and inspiration. The meadow and gardens invite gentle exercise and contemplation. A bird watchers' paradise! The pool we share with the local hotel in Cherveix Cubas (few minutes’ drive) is available to guests, and there are also two swimming lakes very nearby. One is particularly suitable for young children and has a beach and water slide. Please note the barn layout is open plan and the kitchenette is integral to the ground floor living space. There is a shared washing machine and freezer space on request. I offer babysitting if required.

Why choose to come and stay in Le Bourmier?: Le Bourmier was built in 1792, undoubtedly by an artisan who understood his land and his raw materials. Everything fits together creating harmony between man and nature. I first went there in the Easter of 1991, quite by chance, at the invitation of the previous owner. I walked through the simple front door into the kitchen, and felt that it was a special place. Peacefulness, and a special something about the way this building nestles in the valley and catches the light, drew me to it. A year later I bought the property! Anlhiac is an exceptionally beautiful village, with two chateaux, an unusual church open to the public and a very welcoming community. The restaurant and cafe, (also shop for bread and basic groceries), are a few minutes' walk from the barn in the village square. Just up the road is the splendid Chateau d'Essendieras, former home of writer Andre Maurois and which now offers golf, horse riding and an excellent restaurant.

Cultural history: This part of the world is one of the centres of prehistory, and where we can learn how we lived tens of thousands of years ago. The world museum of prehistory at Les Eyzies is superb, as are the facsimiles of the cave paintings at Lascaux, and the real thing (still open to the public) at Font de Gaume, Les Combarelles, and Teyjat. In medieval times the troubadours created a new poetry which was the foundation of the western poetic tradition. Two of the most famous, Giraut de Bornelh and Bertran de Born, lived nearby in the marvellous castles of Hautefort and Excideuil. Visits led by a local specialist to Excideuil (in French or English) can be arranged. Limoges (1 hour's drive) is another great cultural centre for glass, porcelain and enamel. The famous forge at Savignac is only 15 minutes' drive, or can be reached by the walking trail (of which there are many) along the river Auvezere. There is also a museum of a unique paper mill, Papeterie de Vaux, which used rye straw.

'Le Bourmier' - Ideal for writers, or as a retreat: This part of the Perigord is unspoilt, and with little traffic. The barn is situated in the 'lieu dit' (hamlet) of Le Bourmier, part of the village of Anlhiac and is ideal for those wishing to go on retreat. It is also very suitable for writers and artists, offering a supportive environment and relative solitude. Special rates on request for guests wishing to stay for longer periods. The area abounds in natural lakes where you can swim, beautiful rivers for canoeing, or discovering on foot. I found a huge drift of wild aspholdels on the bank of the river Auvezere one Easter. From the house ornithologists can hear the hoopoe, and many other birds. One of my guests saw a hobby catch a swift on the wing. Horse riding and golf are available at the chateau Essendieras 5 minutes' drive away. Please be aware that the barn is semi detached with the owner's farmhouse. There is therefore some shared space. Total seclusion may be offered on request.

Golf: There is a new championship 9 hole golf course at the nearby Chateau d'Essendieras only 10 minutes' drive from the barn.

Other Activities: caving, canoeing.

'Le Bourmier'

Rob and Angie Bromley UK
Review Submitted: September 14, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
"Dear Leni

We can't thank you enough for one the most relaxing and wonderful holidays we have had!

You have been so welcoming and warm. Your barn is fabulous and we could want for no more in accommodation. Thank you!

This part of France is a well kept secret! We have visited some truly beautiful villages and hamlets. What better than potter around the area every morning, come 'home' for lunch and rest away the afternoon and evening with a good book or listening to Beethoven.

The local bar/restaurant is very good and reasonable.

We have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and see that we will return some day.

Keep in touch and maybe you will realise the Trans Siberian Dream as we have realised the French Dream.

Love Angela and Rob

A uniquely beautiful place

NorahC Dublin, Ireland
Review Submitted: September 7, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My partner and I stayed in Le Bourmier for two weeks in August 2009, and it was one of the best holidays I've ever had. The barn is huge and open-plan, with enchanting high wood-beamed ceilings, and fitted with carefully chosen, beautiful antiques. I appreciated how clean the place was, as well as the morning view of the old church in the village from the bedroom, and the afternoon view of rolling fields from a lounger under the fig tree out the back.
Lenni is a wonderful host, and it is easy to see from the small details - from the antique crockery to the enormous book and video collection - that she offers her guests the best. She is both accommodating (we helped in her magic vegetable garden one morning, feeding ducks and picking tomatoes), and discreet.
This area makes one feel like they have returned to childhood. Go on the 30 minute walk around the fields and see huge trees, wild toads and old donkeys. Stop at the local farmyard for milk and cheese. See the 15 thousand year old cave paintings at Font de Gaume and get some old linen in the brocante in nearby village of Cherieux-Cubas. The owner has provided guests with a folder of the most diverse things to do in the region, from a Museum of Medicine in Hautefort (it's really interesting!), to a list of walks, restaurants, and formal gardens. However, you'll find it hard not to want to stay in with good local food, wine and a video, with the candles lit up in the tiny stone recesses.

My only anixety in writing this review is that too many people will go and it will be booked up when I want to go next year!

Drei Wochen wunderbar ruhiger Urlaub auf dem Land

B. und U. Germany
Review Submitted: September 5, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009

Holiday stay in Le Bourmier

Rikky Hatfield, England
Review Submitted: June 9, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
I felt I must write and thank you for accommodating us recently. You were so welcoming and your food was wonderful. We so enjoyed the view across the valley; and your spacious rooms, especially the bedroom with its oak beams, was much admired.

The village is delightful – we so enjoyed our local walks. And our visits to Hautefort and Excideuil; and to Lascaux to view the prehistoric cave paintings, were particularly memorable, as were our visit to the paper mill
where we had hands-on making our own paper!
