'The Ark Julie Marlowe' - An ark is a house built on pilings over the water. Ours is located in downtown Sausalito in front of the yacht harbor.
It consists of TWO separate one bedroom units which may be connected if desired.
Waterfront Unit is $250 a night
Town Side Unit is $200 a night
The waterfront unit has a sitting room, bedroom and kitchen opening to a large deck over looking the yacht harbour.
The street front unit has a bedroom, sitting room and a small kitchen (2 burner stove) with a private deck on the street side.
Both units are beautifully decorated for a quiet stay (NOT for parties) - each unit sleeps two - three. Each unit has a queen size bed and a full pull out couch. There are pocket doors in each unit to seperate the bedroom from the living room.
30 minutes to Muir Woods. 45 minutes to Wine Country, 15 minutes to San Francisco.
An Ark is a house on piles over water with one end connected to land, I was very fortunate to be able to purchase this building in 1986-- The ark is now a historic building erected in 1917- I am the third owner. The original house was a barge jacked up on piles. I personally rebuilt the house in 1986 in the same theme of the original barges.
Julie Wu purchased this house boat in 1986
Sausalito is a very unique town with yachts and water on one side and shops, resturants on the other side and beautiful houses covering the hills. Very much like the Med. in Europe
Our Ark is in the center of the downtown area-park your car in our private space in front of the ark and walk accross the street to shops, coffee houses, resturants, markets, boat rentals, bike rentals and the ferry to San Francisco is 5 mins walk down yacht strand next to the ark.
The Ark Julie Marlowe is adorable and the location is perfect. I visited Sausalito for a wedding--we stayed on the street side. The street was so quiet I could do yoga on the little fenced patio in front of the Ark. It was lovely to be right on the water, and there are marvelous cafes and restaurants within walking distance--one right next door! I would definitely stay in the Ark if I visit Sausalito. Just looking at the little photo, I am homesick for the Ark. Note to owner--we could have used another blanket or comforter for the sofa bed. I would like to come back when I have more time to hang out in the Ark, which is very cozy.
We stayed on the street side (this is misleading, it's really nowhere near the street) and had a perfect weekend. The ark was beautiful and peaceful, and conveniently located to everything I had planned for that weekend. I didn't bring a car, so location was extremely important to me. Several outdoor cafes were only steps away, and the more populated tourist section was only a few blocks. Our morning walks along the shore and to the houseboats on Napa were one of the many highlights of our stay.
Inside the ark was extremely quiet, even with the bar/restaurant next door (and it was World Series week!) . It was furnished with everything I needed, and then some. Really well thought-out. The side deck was the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea in the morning or a glass of wine in the afternoon. The decor was charming and comfortable.
I will definitely stay at the ark the next time I am in Sausalito. I live across the bay in San Francisco, so I suspect the ark will be my go-to place whenever I need a staycation. Next time, I'll try the water side.
Oh, the poached egg at Cibo? I'll be back.
We flew out from Chicago to the second international Boogie Woogie festival in San Francisco. We rented the houseboat with friends (a perfect arrangement, we took Water and they took Land and we all had morning coffee's from Cibo on the deck each morning before we left for the day-so easy, Cibo was just across the street so we could also meet with family and friends in the area in an city that was fun to visit with lots of easy restaurants to walk to-we found our accommodations charming and perfectly appointed. Parking come with the rental was a huge plus. Easy in, easy out! a perfect weekend get away. And we are looking forward to coming back again!
We stayed in the town side of the ark and had a wonderful time. The unit was immaculate when we arrived and filled all of our needs. However, on our way out to dinner the night we were there we locked ourselves out. (oops) The owner was very gracious and came over from San Francisco to let us back in.
I didn't think to climb in a window as the last reviewer mentioned, but can only imagine that b/c there was no key in the lock box and the place was not immaculate that the cleaning crew was still working on the unit.
We had dinner at the Seafood Peddler, yummy...If you are there in time for lunch, or are looking for a lighter dinner, Hamburgers at 737 Bridgeway makes a delicious burger, and we went to Fred's also on Bridgeway for breakfast, it's the place where the locals go, very good.
Got off to a VERY BAD start! Long, frustrating story made short......No key in the lockbox when I arrived. Placed phone calls to both Johnathan and Julie and received their voice mails, so I left messages. Called the 3rd # provided and was told it would take him 1 to 1 1/2 hours to get to me. That didn't work for me....I had a surprise birthday party to get to. I found an unlocked window, and fortunately I am an agile 67 year old woman and was able to climb in. The keys were on the kitchen counter.
The condition of the Ark was much less than expected from prior reviews. There were a bunch of dishes that I guess had been washed, and left on the counter to dry. There were toothpaste spatters on the bathroom mirror, neither the kitchen or bathroom counters had been wiped down, there was left over, partially used food in the refrigerator, a dirty glass (complete with left over wine and lipstick) in the cabinet, there was a throw rug left laying out on the deck, along with a used towel draped over a chair..???? I felt like I had interrupted someone in the middle of cleaning....only there was no one around. I checked to see if the sheets on the bed were clean, and it appeared they were, so I unloaded my car, freshened up and proceeded to head to my niece's "surprise" birthday party. I arrived late, due to this fiasco, so I missed the family "Surprise".
I finally received a phone call from Johnathan the next day at about 10:30. He was very apologetic and offered to refund me 1/2 of my money. How does one put a price on missing the "surprise" part of my niece's 50th birthday and the fact that I cleaned the Ark before I even felt comfortable in there. Even so, for four days I hesitated to use anything or even sit on anything ( I used a towel) for fear it wasn't clean. However, I felt that Johnathan sounded very sincere and his offer was gracious; this is the only reason I am giving them two stars.
This experience is exactly why I hesitate to use VRBO and others. It's a shame, because the "Ark" was as is shown in the pictures and should have been a pleasant, relaxing get a way. It is not fancy, and unfortunately in my case, not clean, but the location was convenient. Do be prepared though, there is a bar/restaurant next door (Bar Bocce) and it can be quite noisy until about 10:30 p.m.
I hesitate to recommend this to anyone based on my experience.
Had a great stay here. Owners were easy to deal with and everything went very smoothly. We had just the town side unit while others were in the water side unit. This was not an issue at all. I don't think we ever heard each other.
Location - there really is no better location in town for houseboat type accommodations. When i was looking for options, i did not realize how far out of the downtown area some of them are. We had a car but would have been fine without it for this part of our trip. Can't say enough good about location.
