La Bella Toscana!

What a fantastic week we shared at Podere Borgacciano in late September! Everywhere we looked, there was another place to sit with our espresso or wine and gaze out over marvelous vistas of cornfields, vineyards, cypress, olive trees, hillstowns, and mountain ranges. The farmhouse villa was lovely - comfortable and beautifully decorated. The pool complex was luxurious, and the weather was still warm enough for some swimming. Don said he "felt like Nero" as he lounged alongside the infinity edge. It was a dream to be able to pick fresh figs for breakfast. We were lucky to arrive on the weekend of Monterchi's annual Polenta Fest, and joined the townspeople for an afternoon of reverly - complete with fungi and tomato sauces, homemade sausages, and plenty of vino rosso. The owners of Monti's Supermarket were so friendly and accommodating, trying to meet our every need as we struggled with our Italian. Many ancient hilltowns are within a short drive, and Sansepolcro was wonderful for shopping and lunch at Ristorante Fiorentino. Don was even able to secure a guide to fly fish for brown trout on the Upper Tiber River - a very successful morning and gorgeous fish. - Our housekeeper Imperia's hospitality is not to be missed! She prepared a delicious several course welcome dinner the first night, and we asked her to return to prepare homemade pizza in the forno one afternoon. After caprese salad, 6 kinds of pizza, and a fruit tart, we all went comatose poolside! It was such fun sipping wine with the Podere Borgacciano label and knowing that olive oil Imperia used came from the groves on the property. Nearby restaurants worth going to include La Veccia Osteria and La Pieve Vecchia. We especially enjoyed walks along the road where the farmhouse is located. A hound dog often joined us as our companion/guard, and we took apples to a friendly donkey nearby. Vineyards lining the road were laden with purple grapes, and the lighting on the landscape changed moment by moment. The old chapel down the street was very picturesque and made for some interesting photographs. We are so happy our good friends Linda and Bill could share the week with us at Podere Borgacciano. Although we wish we could keep this paradise a secret, we cannot help ourselves from showing our album and telling favorite tales of our adventures. Thank you, Janette and Danny, for sharing your special spot. We hope to be able to return someday. - Christy, Don, Linda, and Bill - Massachusetts, USA
