In the heart of Renaissance Italy, on Tuscany/Umbrian border, high on 400mt ridge, stands 'Podere Borgacciano'. 3km. from Monterchi, a medieval walled village (see Thames & Hudson's 'The Most Beautiful Villages in Tuscany'). Our lovingly restored 17C stone villa offers breathtaking magical views & tranquility set in

beautiful mature gardens - wafting scents of roses, lavender, jasmine, rosemary and herbs. 5 acre grounds merge into panoramic countryside - fortified hilltop villages, castles, olive groves, vineyards, chestnut, oak and cypress woods, figs, sunflowers, poppies, corn, tobacco - enjoying total relaxation, peace and privacy without isolation. (village General Store 3kms). Magnificent 14mX6m infinity-edge swimming pool surrounded by lemons, Cypress and Olive groves with stunning views south from beautiful landscaped terraces across valley to the lush green Umbrian hills,

**SLEEPS 10 with ANNEX

POOL COMPLEX OPEN 28 April to 27 Oct 2012 : Magnificent 14X6 mt pool surrounded by 350 sq. mtrs of terraces, walkways, flower beds, cypress and olive trees. THE POOLHOUSE has a shower/ WC, summer kitchen and large shaded terrace,

table and chairs, barbeques and pizza forno, from which to enjoy al-fresco meals with stunning views across the valley. Mediaeval Lippiano Castle and the lush green Umbrian Hills form a backdrop.

We installed the finest pool equipment from the USA made by Culligan. The Diatomea Filter(Fullers Earth)filters out all particles over 0.50 microns. (The average Sand filter, filters out particles over 30 microns, making ours 60X more efficient) The Chlorination and Ph levels are computer controlled. Our groundsman cleans the pool and checks water quality weekly. An electrically controlled pool cover for insulation and safety is installed. The 14 mtr infinity edge allows you to feel as if you are swimming in the valley whilst listening to your favourite music from the outdoor speakers.

THE VILLAGE: Monterchi, its name derived from 'MONS HERCULIS' (hill of Hercules) whose cult was celebrated here in ancient Etruscan and Roman periods, is home of the famous Renaissance fresco 'The Madonna del Parto' (The Madonna of Childbirth) The mother of Piero della Francesca, the painter of the fresco, was born in Monterchi and the village became famous when in 1888 the fresco, painted in 1446 and considered one of Piero's finest masterpieces, was uncovered in the chapel of the cemetery. This restored fresco is now well displayed in the old village schoolhouse.

SIGHTSEEING: Podere Borgacciano is a 'Springboard' for sightseeing.

Florence (130 kms); Siena (90 kms);San Gimingnano (110 kms.) Assisi (75 kms) Pisa (150 kms); Perugia (65 kms); Arezzo (30 kms) (all distances approx.) are within easy reach. Rome, Bologna, and the Chianti wine countryside are within one to two hours travel. Both the Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts are no more than 2 hrs easy travel.

Local pearls such as Sansepolcro, Citta di Castello, Gubbio, Urbino, Anghiari, Caprese Michaelangelo (the artist's birthplace) and many more, abound with culture, art treasures, music and folk festivals.

Another Fabulous Stay At The Villa

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Danny and Janette for another wonderful stay at Podere Borgacciano! Karen and I brought two couples with us this year and they immediately fell in love with the property too. We were hoping for good weather in September to enjoy the grounds and pool area and were not disappointed. We had planned more day trips to surrounding towns while staying, but couldn't resist relaxing at the villa in the warm sun for most of the week.

Before making the booking last spring, I had done considerable research on the internet to compare other properties in Tuscany with this villa to be sure we should return for another vacation. While many properties had lovely accommodations, none had it all like Podere Borgacciano - the amazing landscaping, incredible pool area with kitchen and covered patio, the countryside views or the well furnished and comfortable converted farmhouse. Having the local contacts and services were especially helpful. The care and thought Danny and Janette have put into the villa during the last 20 years is clearly evident.

Our one regret was that Danny and Janette were unable to be there during our stay and we missed catching up with them and getting more great recommendations on local places of interest. Of course, we did repeat our visit to FIMA in Deruta for handpainted ceramics (highly recommended by Danny and Janette). Michael again gave us an informative tour of their processes and was very patient as we determined individual orders for many different ceramic items. Also of note was a wonderful dinner in Sansepolcro at Ristorante Fiorentino. It is a family owned restaurant, where we met daughter Alessia, who as the sommelier among other roles, helped us with the wine selection and provided insight into the restaurant history and local issues. Of course, we also returned twice to one of our favorite restaurants, La Pieve Vecchia, outside the walls of Monterchi to enjoy good food in their outdoor patio area as the sun went down. While I could go on, it would be repeating what others have said in their reviews and I can simply say that we would agree with all the glowing reports about this villa. We hope to be back again in the future.

Wonderful, Amazing, Relaxing, Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

Podere Borgacciano is the perfect place to explore Tuscany. Our hosts were amazing as Danny and Janette were extremely helpful with advice and superb hosts. We cannot thank them enough for the wonderful stay we experienced while in Italy. Monterchi and the surrounding area is a good as it gets. There were so many places to visit and things to see we wish we could have stayed for another week just to experience the people and villages in the area. We were fortunate to have Imperia Benvenuti cook us a wonderful afternoon 5 course lunch with fresh fruits, salads, pizza, desert while teaching us the history of the area. What a wonderful and amazing place and experience.

Danny & Janette have done an amazing job with the home, grounds, pool and the overall ambiance of Podere Borgacciano. We feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience this special place with our family. Podere Borgacciano is such a wonderful place I'd like to keep it a secret however it's to be enjoyed and cherished - If you go to Italy it's a must that you have an opportunity to visit, relax , stay and enjoy.

Marcello and his family at the local supermarket is Monterchi were wonderful, helpful, patient and extremely nice. They even picked some items from their personal garden for us - what a wonderful group of people and location. Their homemade Italian sausages cannot be repeated and are the most amazing add to a great spaghetti dinner and breakfast .

Several mornings the chickens gave us gifts of fresh eggs - what a treat !! for breakfast. Thank you Danny & Janette for a wonderful stay and a perfect holiday at Podere Borgacciano - Your hospitality and home is amazing.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure meeting you and your lovely family. We are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday and are happy to have been of help. Our aim is to give our guests every comfort in our beautiful villa/farmhouse and help them to obtain the maximum benefit from their holiday. All our guests say that their holiday was not long enough to sightsee all they intended. Hardly surprising ! We have been here nearly 20 years and have not seen everything that the rich Tuscan treasures have to offer !!

Beautiful and peaceful

Podere Borgacciano is in a beautiful setting. Whichever way you look there is another fantastic view. The pool and the pool house are excellent - complete with a wood burning oven for authentic pizzas. If you can tear yourself away from the villa's gardens and terraces the surrounding towns and villages are really lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed a very relaxing holiday and can recommend it highly.

We were 4 girls staying at Podere Borgacciano and we had a fabulous time. The home is lovely -with everything we could want - it is the amazing views, beautifully kept gardens and location that really made it for us. Every window had a gorgeous view and we alternated where we ate breakfast and dinner as there were sitting areas spread around the garden for us to choose from. We loved the being able to pick raspberries, rosemary and collect fresh eggs from the chickens each day and the complimentary olive oil was a treat.

We chose to be at the villa late June so we could enjoy warm weather and avoid lots of tourists and our plans worked. Although we didn't swim daily, we certainly enjoyed sitting by the pool reading books and taking in the gorgeous view.

As expected after reading previous reviews, Imperia was a highlight! The meal she cooked for us by the pool and the stories told were fabulous. We spent a day looking around her town of Cisterna a 10 minute drive from the villa and had a delicious lunch at a restaurant her family once ran.

We loved being close to little villages - enjoying day trips to Sansepolcro and others. The town closest to the villa- Monterchi has a supermarket that we enjoyed - the people running it are friendly and clearly like tourists! We were delighted to be offered local truffles at such a reasonable price and had a gorgeous meal at the villa using them.

The help of the owners needs to be mentioned as well. Emails answered promptly and with lots of helpful suggestions - one being the Joust in Arezzo. We stayed in Arezzo and fell in love with the city, such great character and easy to walk around. The Joust happens twice a year and we loved being there for it - it was the suggestion of Danny that we organise tickets and he suggested where to stay and eat in Arezzo - all of which we did and loved!

We 4 girls left a total of 9 kids at home (in Australia, Canada and Scotland!) aged from 4-15 and all said we'd love to return with our children and husbands next time!

Nothing but good things to report about our stay at this amazing villa. We were lucky to have the owners here for half our stay, giving us fantastic restaurant recommendations and history lessons about the area. Not to mention the fresh eggs, herbs and wine we enjoyed. Just a wonderful week, we hate to leave!

Fantastic Week!

  • 5 of 5

We (two couples, no kids) had a fantastic week in this lovely home. The views are truly breathtaking, and there are so many terraces to enjoy them from. The grounds and pool area are really exceptional. We loved the outdoor kitchen. One night we made rosemary potatoes with rosemary that was growing by the pool, and we enjoyed many omelets with fresh eggs from the chicken coop. Also enjoyed a delightful "pizza lunch" cooked for us by Imperia - DO NOT MISS this wonderful treat if you stay here!

We had a nice balance of relaxing at the house and taking day-trips. The Chianti region and Gubbio in Umbria were close enough by car, and we took the train into Florence from Arezzo. Nearby, the hilltown of Anghiari is lovely.

Podere Borgacciano definitely lived up to our fantasy of a perfect Italian villa vacation! We are happy to recommend it!
