Two light, airy, fully-equipped apartments recently created in La Maison Rose, an old stone cottage in a country village 'beauty spot'. Each consists of a living/dining/kitchen area with large sofa-bed, and a separate double sleeping area. One has access to a balcony and a garden which runs to a trout stream. They can be conveniently combined at a discount. La Maison Rose, built in traditional thick-walled style in 1816 by a Napoleonic military pensioner, faces the South in the locally popular village of Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne which nestles, along with its Michelin 2-star sights and chateaux, in the folds of the limestone French Jura plateau in a river valley beneath craggy, wooded cliffs and several official view-points. The cottage faces an orchard and the heights of the remains of the Chateau of Ste.Anne; and behind it, above caves, a rock-climbing route runs along the cliffs. The surroundings are ideal for both the sporty and the leisurely! Much to do and see. Vineyards nearby!

Ideal for families, couples, or a group of friends. Discreetly separated bedroom area with large double-bed. Large double sofa-bed in the living/dining/kitchen area. En-suite WC, good pressure shower and hand-basin. Bed linen and towels provided. Electric stove, microwave/grill oven, fridge-freezer, coffee machine, wine rack. All necessary kitchen equipment (incl. teapot and corkscrew!). Table fan for summer 'coolth'. CH for winter. 'Library’ of local info. Radio/CD and TV for VCs in unlikely case of persistent rain! The popular village of Nans-sous-Ste.Anne, 25 miles south of the city of Besancon, is tucked away in a sparsely populated, but densely forested area noted for dairy cattle, horse-breeding, cheese and wine. It attracts older visitors for its tranquillity, Michelin 2-star sights, cuisine, gentle exercise, and motoring. Younger visitors enjoy walking, caving, climbing, mountain-biking, fishing, horse-riding and canoeing from the village. 15 mins away are para-gliding, swimming, tennis etc, as are nearest supermarkets and other facilities. There is plenty, too, to amuse younger children. Village sights include the spectacular gorge where the River Lison cascades fully-formed and a working early 19C water-driven farm-tools factory. There are 2 restaurants and a dairy shop offering its own cheeses as well as wine from the nearby (Arbois/Cotes du Jura) vineyards. Within a day's easy motoring Switzerland is 45 minutes away; Burgundy one hour; Alsace and Germany 2 hours; Italy 3½ hours.

Notes: The owner, British (and a Rotarian), lives at hand and discreetly makes every effort to ensure that guests get the best value from their visit. Although changeover day is normally Saturday, he will find it easier to be flexible at quieter times. He will also consider weekend lets out of the high season. In any case, he will offer a reduced rate for both apartments booked together. He can, for a reasonable extra charge, collect you from airport or train station, although own transport is strongly recommended for maximum value from your stay. He can lend canoe, mountain bike, tennis equipment, toboggans and skis. Indeed, winter is not a bad time to come. Without tree foliage spectacular views are more numerous, and there is greater chance of spotting the wildlife (deer, foxes and wild boar) in which the woods abound. Given enough snow, nearest cross-country skiing is only 10 mins' drive away. But, whatever the time of year, you'll never be short of things to do and see.

Skiing: The Jura Mountains are particularly noted for facilities for cross-country skiing, and there are trails everywhere. Given enough snow, the nearest such trail is 10 minutes from the apartments. Equipment hire facilities abound. For downhill skiing the nearest reasonable slopes are 40 minutes away. The cost of skiing (hire, lifts, restaurants, etc) in the Jura (above Pontarlier, Metabief, Les Rousses etc) tends to be rather less than in the more fashionable resorts in the nearby Alps. That said, the latter are also reasonably accessible from the apartments. Local resorts also have beginners' facilities and toboggan areas.

Golf and Watersports: There are three golf courses within reasonable reach, the nearest about 35 minutes away. Details from the owner. Although indoor/outdoor pool and river swimming facilities can be enjoyed close to the village, the two local lakes (each 40 minutes away) are recommended for a wide range of aquatic activities.

Local facilities: There are two public telephones in the village. Bouygues has the best mobile phone reception. Nearest food shop, cash distributor, post office and petrol are at Amancey 10 minutes' drive away. However, there is a greater choice of such facilities, together with others, in Salins-les-Bains, the local market town, 15 minutes away at the northern end of the local 'Cotes du Jura' wine area. The nearest city, 40 minutes away, is Besancon with Hypermarkets and more sophisticated shopping facilities. There are very many good restaurants (for both local and national cuisine) and picnic facilities in the area and wider region.
