*Proud to say that in our second year of business we have been booked almost every night since mid Dec. thru mid April* Read our reviews!!!
Calypso has 700 square feet of dining and living area, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and a full kitchen all under A/C. With the “usable” full-size sleeper sofa (it has a memory foam mattress) open in the living room she sleeps up to 8. Additionally, there is a huge rooftop deck (another 500 sq feet) with a covered granite wet bar, sitting/lounging areas and a dining table. She is brand new with top end furnishings and docked on Lake Largo at the Pilot House Marina, just outside of downtown Key Largo.
This just built 3 bedroom houseboat-style yacht with luxury furnishings sits directly on Lake Largo at the Pilot House (PH) Marina–a number #1 rated marina in the Keys. Just down the dock is the Boardwalk with the Pilot House Restaurant and Glass Bottom Bar–a locals' favorite with in/outdoor dining, and tiki bar with 30+ glass floor panels. Further down the Boardwalk you can sign up for scuba and snorkling dive tours, take an underwater tour of a Coral Restoration facility, or twice a day hop on board a hydrofoil glass bottom boat and be over the reefs in minutes. Or, charter a fishing boat. Or, walk 500 feet down the road to swim with the dolphins. Or, drive through the Keys, over the 7-Mile Bridge to Mallory Square in Key West, and see the jugglers and street performers while watching the most famous sunset in the US. The kids can bike to the town water park and tennis courts, or you can spend the day at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park–all described below. No one will get bored watching TV in a motel…
Calypso sleeps up to 8. Full-size stainless steel appliances including a dish washer. The master bed room has a 6'x6' window with unobstructed marina views. Side windows may or may not have views depending on when other boats dock alongside. She is on a floating 5 foot wide concrete dock, so it’s just two 5” steps up at any tide. The docks are lighted and stable–they don't sway or move, except imperceptily up and down with the tide. Hang out on the huge roof top deck with a covered granite wet bar and dining area with grill. She is smack in the middle of the marina–watch the yachts and fishing boats come in and out, or doze on the chaisse lounges.
The Pilot House Marina, Restaurant and Glass Bottom Bar are in the heart of Key Largo, FL–the best diving and fishing waters of the world. Relax at the casual Glass Bottom Tiki Bar while looking at your houseboat. Wings to stuffed lobster, burgers, fish, shrimp, steak, and daily specials all family priced. Several nights of the week local musicians perform (some are great, some are “funky”)–yes you can hear it on Calypso, but the music ends by 11 PM if it’s not your favorite. Preview the scene at the PH Marina website for live webcams of the action and see the performers' schedule. Walk to the Key Largo Fisheries outdoor café/market on the other side of Lake Largo to bring home fish/lobster/crab that's just hours old, cooked or raw. There are dozens of restaurants, many outdoors and on the water, within a 1-15 minute drive. Great inexpensive food by Chef Todd, of the prior PH Calypso restaurant for which our boat is named, is just across the street at the American Legion, along with the cheapest drinks in the Keys. See the link, below, to Calypso's website, for detailed information as there's just too much to say here.
Stroll down the PH Boardwalk and sign up for a scuba, snorkeling or glass bottom boat trip to the John Pennekemp Coral Reef State Park, just a few minutes away by boat. This undersea Park and the adjacent Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary cover 178 nautical square miles of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamps. The Park extends 3 miles into the Atlantic and is 25 miles long. These areas preserve the only living coral reef in the continental US. Drive 3.6 miles to the Park's Visitor Center and see the 30,000 gallon aquarium, and use their three sandy swimming beachs (a rarity in the Keys) one of which has the remnants of a Spanish shipwreck just 100 feet off shore for snorkling fun. If you don't snorkle, go out on their giant glass-bottom boats or canoe/kayak the park's inland waters surrounded by mangroves. Walk the trails and picnic.
You can visit the underwater Park, two times a day, right from the PH's Boardwalk aboard one of two dive boats (Scuba-Do and Keys Diver)–bring your own equipment, or use theirs and learn by diving the shallow reefs, or sign up for wreck dives in the crystal clear waters of Key Largo and Tavernier. For nondivers, take the Largo Looker–a unique, intimate (seats only 6) hydrofoil glass boat that leaves right from our dock at 9:00AM and 1:00PM for 2 hour tours ($65@). Free moorings are provided throughout the Park (daytime use only) if you want to dive from your own boat. Call the PH Dock Master (Matt, 305-747-4359) to bring your own boat and store it on PH’s racks, on its trailer or in the water nearby.
Further down the Boardwalk, charter a fishing boat for the day, or visit the Coral Restoration Foundation Educational Center. Take their 1- or 2-day coral preservation course which includes lectures on coral anatomy and two afternoon dives, one in the coral nursery and one at an outplanting site. Of course, you can get PADI scuba certified at all three dive centers at the Pilot House Marina.
Eventually, you may even want to leave the marina! Walk a few hundred yards down the street to Dolphins Plus, the original Swim With The Dolphins (& sea lions) program in Key Largo. Drive a couple minutes down to the next harbor and take a dinner cruise aboard the African Queen on the actual boat used by Hepburn & Bogart in the 1951 movie. Let the kids bike 1/2 mile, down residential streets, to the Jacobs Aquatic Center's three pools with water slides, etc. Next door to the Center is the town's park with free tennis, handball, roller blade/cardio paths and dog walking areas. Beaches are rare in the Keys which are made of built-up coral, but you can drive and park at tiny private beachs along the Overseas Highway in Islamorada. There are three nice beaches at the John Pennekamp Park and elsewhere in the Keys, and we'll tell you where they are. And, we're less than 2 hours to Key West, with the most unusual scenery you'll see anywhere on a roadtrip in the US.
You can leave Boston or New York on one of dozens of 3 to 2.5 hour daily direct flights to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami in the morning and be on Calypso's deck by early afternoon, in the tropics. Of course, the winter season is most popular with temp's in the high 70's to low 80's for Nov-Mar with almost no rain (1-2 inches per month). But, we like the summer when its inexpensive and a less busy time to explore the Keys. The Keys have just half the summer rainfall that southern Florida (e.g., Miami) does. There are sea breezes and temp's stay in the mid-to-high 80's during the 'rainy' season from May through October, and showers occur in the mornings. That's why Floridians summer in the Keys given the great year-round weather. Most of our renters are from Florida, and they know the best places to go in the state.
The marina is protected on all four sides so there are momentary gentle waves from passing boats–No, you won't get seasick! You will hear ropes creaking and the chimes and gongs of the rigging on nearby sailboats, which can put you to sleep. Please note that high winds and storms do occur and we can't plan for them. They will cause much back-and-forth movement, bumping and creaking–it is a boat on the water–until the wind abates, but the docks will remain stable. Fishing boats may leave/return in the early morning hours, but captains are usually courteous and minimize their wake and engine noise, but diesels do rumble even at idle and they pass right by the houseboat.
Calypso is a brand new and available for your vacation bare boat charter at the Pilot House. We have a local manager who lives in the marina. Calypso stays on the dock; she cannot be moved from the marina without an owner/captain aboard. Your charter will be stationary, but still feel nautical and is right on the water. There are plenty of local captains ready to take you out for the day on their fishing or dive boats, and then you can come home to your floating retreat. Try a unique boating experience for your next vacation! (updated 07/04/14)

What a beautiful houseboat to stay on!! We felt like we were in a new condo on the water! It is well maintained and includes new appliances, new bathrooms and upgraded bedrooms. It has warmth in the overall decor and is someplace I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a large multi room place to enjoy in Key Largo. When you finally get a chance to go topside, you'll find a large deck big enough for your family and friends to enjoy as well. The onsite property manager is great and we look forward to staying here again on our next trip to Key Largo.
Response from you: Thanks Seth We looking forward to having your family stay with us again. Michelle
What a great houseboat. There was 5 of us and we had so much room. The upper deck was fantastic place to watch the sunset. We spent Thanksgiving on the boat and used the electric grill on the upper deck to grill lobster. We had such a wonderful time on this houseboat. The Pilothouse, which is a restaurant at the Marina, is a nice place to have a drink and relax. We dove with Keys Divers, which departs from the Marina, and had a wonderful time diving. I highly recommend this houseboat and we hope to be back in the future.
This is a GREAT vacation idea for families and large groups, reunions, divers and visitors.
We had a lovely 3 night stay aboard the Calypso. It is quite spacious...definitely a rarity to find a boat with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. It was as nice as any high end hotel room. The water pressure was sufficient and it even has a dishwasher and full size fridge. The A/C worked well and the beds were comfy. The decor is beautiful. There were 2 flat screen tv's. One in the living room and one in the master bedroom!
The boat only rocks a tiny bit when other boats pass by. Other than that, it's pretty stationary. Speaking of stationary, the boat is not equipped to leave the dock. I was somehow under the impression that we could hire a captain to take the boat out. That is not the case...but there are other small boats you can rent at the Marina by the day.
We brought our jetskis with us and had the Marina drop them for us via forklift and then docked them for our 3 day stay. It cost us $60 to drop/haul-out and $150 to dock them for the duration. I had gone online and sent a note to the dockmaster ahead of time and they were expecting us. The Marina guys were really nice when we had an issue with the skis and needed to take a look underneath and they were totally willing to lift them o ut for us on Day 2 to take a look.
We chartered an offshore fishing trip aboard the Miss Chief w/ Captain Dan and Pete. It was the highlight of our trip! Their boat is directly across the water from the Calypso. They were super freindly and easy going and we caught Mahi and loads of Vermillion Snapper. We took some of our fresh catch to Sharky's around the corner from the Marina and they prepared it for us. It was amazing! As far as restaurants go, the Pilot House Restaraunt has a fun atmosphere, but our food was average. Same with Snook's across the Highway on the Bay side. But the sunset view at Snook's is gorgeous.
The Marina is very close to everything....grocery stores, Walgreens, fast food, Starbucks but it's tucked back off the road. We felt very safe. There was a key provided but we never felt the need to lock the doors when we left. The only people walking around are the families that come to eat dinner at the Marina and the other owner/operators.
It's really more fun to just chill on the huge deck upstairs with a drink and listen to the music from across the marina. The wifi works great. We ended up buying a little speaker for our iPod and creating our own little rooftop listening room. A stereo system would be a nice addition to the boat. Other than that I canno
Just arrived home from probably the best vacation ever - family vacation for 7 of us. From the moment we walked in - smelled great and looked great (even better than the pictures). After a great dinner & cocktails at the Pilot House Marina & Restaurant (service was great too) we spent our first of many relaxing nights on the upper deck, watching the sun set, the lights twinkle and feeling that great ocean breeze while playing cards and enjoying being together. After a quick trip to Publix in the morning, breakfast on the boat, then off to explore. We enjoyed a local beach and John Pennekamp State Park where my granddaughter enjoyed playing in the "sand". The kids (ages 37 down to 24) rented paddle boats & a kayaks - which were delivered right to the boat Dinner on the boat with fresh seafood we purchased from the Fishery right across the way. Beds were very comfortable, plenty of room to be together and plenty of place to have privacy. Gail & Michelle, thank you for answering all our questions, you were great throughout the whole process and we have already recommended you to family & friends!!
This boat is a perfect get away. We went with our two kids (18 and 20) and it is rare that we can all enjoy a place equally.
We were met with Howie who had everything ready to go and gave us a nice overview of the while area.
First off: The place is brand new, immaculate and very well equipped. We were all surprised how nice it was. There are three bedrooms that offer lots of privacy and the two bathrooms were a big plus.
There is also a nice kitchen and plenty of room to stretch out.
However, the highlight is the enormous roof top are, both covered and uncovered. We spent 90% of our time up there and enjoyed people watching as the boats passed by. The location, at the end of the marina was very nice as we saw or heard very few people at the far end of the marina.
We had several meals at the restaurant at the Pilot marina and it was excellent - with plenty of options and lots of fresh fish to choose from. Great music as well.
We had all of our breakfasts sitting on the roof top of the boat and couldn't ask for a better spot.
There is also a ton of things to do in the area. We went on the glass bottom boat ride which was left just a few yards from the house boat. It's a great trip and we saw lots of fish. The boat is a high speed boat and we were at the reef in just minutes. The boat is beautiful and the husband and wife owners were great and pointed out each and its name.
We also spent a day at PennyKamp Park. It's 5 miles away and was excellent. We rented paddle boards and kayaks and spent the day on the water. I highly recommend the park, we left a map of the park that shows all of the water trails you can spend the day on.
We also went snorkeling and were amazed at the coral reefs and the thousands of fish. It is really an amazing experience.
My wife spent our evenings drinking mojitos on the roof thinking of when we could get back here!
It really is a great place and a welcome change from the usual hotel/ condo scene.
Thanks fro renting! We will be back.
My daughter, husband and I rented Calypso for a week. It was a truly great relaxing experience. Spent hours reading and playing games on the upper deck. Commuted 1 minute down the dock to a dive boat where we spent the rest of our time on or under the water. Don't miss the coral restoration project exhibit on the dock. There was music from the Pilot House every evening, nearly always a local artist, very nice and ended early so as to not disturb us. Wonderful, friendly, peaceful neighbors The kitchen was adequate stocked, the sleeping space very comfortable and the baths rather large considering the fact that we were on a boat. Would love to stay here again. Highly recommend.
This is the place to stay for divers. The houseboat is the best and the dive operation and coral restoration project are a 30 second walk away. The upper deck is an amazing location for a relaxing evening of great music (from the restaurant) and reading after a dive. The music is not too late. The boat neighborhood is quiet. Amazing kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms for a houseboat. A great, relaxing vacation.
Our Calypso vacation in Key Largo was the best! the boat was immaculately well-cared for, comfortable and very close to everything that's fun in Key Largo...not to mention the Pilot House bar where we saw a manitee under the glass-bottom floor! We will be back!
I'm so glad that we decided to change things up this spring break and rent this house boat!!! Its location in key largo is minutes away from everything, grocery store (Publix), boat and fishing charters, excursions, and plenty of great restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! I will be renting it again!!
