Casa della Volpe (Fox House) is in the high hills above Lucca, has both intimate and distant views over the valley. It has beamed ceilings, an original Tuscan stone kitchen sink, terracotta floors downstairs, ceramic tiled floors upstairs and a super cosy wood burning stove in the sitting room to compliment the central heating on cooler days. Original bread/pizza oven, pergola for outdoor dining. Restored in 2005/2006 in traditional style but incorporating modern facilities. Sweeping views can also be seen from bed in the main bedroom. One of the bedrooms is under the eaves. Heated towel rails. Hair dryers. Satellite TV. DVD. WiFi. (Broadband) The house is charming, well equipped for convenient living. Very private, the house is not overlooked by other houses. Fresh herbs in season. It has an adventurous road. While it is a semi-detached property, the adjacent building is not occupied. It has a well stocked supermarket about three km away as well as a chemist, dry cleaner, hairdresser. Florence is an hour away by car or by rail. Trains run hourly. Horse back riding available. Bicycles can be hired in Lucca.
Long term lets are also possible at this property as well as short term lets.
Casa della Volpe is a welcoming house set in the hills, surrounded by olive trees, with stunning views and the walled city of Lucca just visible in the distance. The old house has been beautifully restored, inside and out, with every modern convenience and home comfort you would want on a holiday. Just the place to soak up the atmosphere of Tuscany as soon as you arrive.
The enormous king size bed in the main bedroom is one of the most comfortable I have slept in and wakening in the morning to hear the birds singing and seeing dawn break over the valley is memorable.
The kitchen in Casa della Volpe is well equipped with everything you will need to be able to rustle up any dishes if you want to cook at home. However, we visited an interesting variety of retaurants (all within a few kilometres) that offered a tasty range of Tuscan home cooked food from simple, delicious lunches to more elaborate dinners. We were never disappointed.
There's a well stocked supermarket, a chemist, bank, restaurants and little bars where you can have a quick coffee or take your time sitting at one of the tables outside – all just five minutes away from Torre at the bottom of the hill.
In the evening, sitting in the garden under the jasmine covered pergola, with a glass of wine and watching the lights of Lucca twinkling in the distance was a tranquil way to end the day.
Although this is a magical retreat you are not too far from the coast, the mountains, central Tuscany, the marble quarries of Massa and beyond. An ideal base to discover the north of Tuscany, but close enough to explore Pisa, Florence or Barga to the north. Lucca is only 10kms away and well worth a visit to see the old parts of the city, the beautiful architecture and cycle round the top of the medieval city walls.
Mark, the owner, was extremely welcoming, kind and helpful. He obviously cares that his guests have a great holiday experience, has extensive knowledge of the area and nothing was too much trouble. All of the above made for a wonderful time and we hope to return before too long.
Volpe is a house with character. A beautiful rustic design, set in the hills surrounding Lucca, you just can’t imagine the views until you have been there.
The house itself was immaculately clean. It has the features of country living such as a big fireplace with a luxurious stove, solid staircase, a big wooden front door and window shutters. The kitchen is a great size, comes with all you need and each room has a view that will take your breath away. The bedrooms are spacious, the beds top quality and I slept like a log each night. Important for some, there is wi-fi, satellite TV with world channels and a range of DVD’s for film lovers. There are books of all types and lots of information for things to do in and around the area.
This is an idyllic and private house on a hill set in almost surreal, peaceful and beautiful countryside where you can get up in the morning, open your door to a sculpted patio to relax in the sun in the morning. One could sit and basque in those mountains forever listening to the birds, taking in the aromas of the flowers and generally just chilling out with fresh air.
Just a short drive away you are in picturesque villages where you can pick up everything you need from local supermarkets, newsagents and bars and get into the Italian way of life. We wanted to see more of the area and were lucky to have a local guide to direct us to walks and drives up to some historical sites and hidden (almost secret) viewing points across the valley to really get an idea of where we were and the history of the villages around Lucca.
We went trekking on horseback in the woods, across meadows, hired bikes to cycle round the ancient old city walls, meandered around the streets of Lucca, went to the weekly market and listened to live classical music in one of the squares.
We didn’t speak much Italian but everyone was helpful and it’s quite fun laughing with the locals when asking questions, ordering at restaurants (an abundance of tasty places to eat) and figuring out our way around.
Mark is the host of this wonderful haven. Such a delightful gent, he made sure we had everything we needed to make this a holiday to remember. Volpe is suitable for families, groups and couples, a versatile lodging with all you need. As an artist looking for a comfortable, peaceful and beautiful escape from both life and work, this was the perfect relaxing yet inspiring place to go.
Thank you for having us, we will be back!
We had a wonderful stay at this quiet and beautiful location above Lucca. The house was very comfortable for our family of 5 - nice and clean bedrooms, washrooms, and a kitchen that was well equipped. The owner was very helpful and hospitable. It was a great location to experience the quiet of the countryside surrounded by olive groves and night-time fireflies. Lucca was about 15 minutes away. We were also able to make day trips to Florence and the Cinqueterre (each about 1 hour away). The driveway was a bit of a challenge for a driver used to North American roads but it became more comfortable with practice.

The listing description does not in fact do justice to just how lovely Casa della Volpe actually is - the house is old, but completely modernised and beautifully maintained. The owner is charming and is available if required. We highly recommend this property to friends and family alike. Casa della Volpe is located above the village of Torre some 10 kilometres or so from the beautiful Tuscan city of Lucca, and we found the house to be a perfect base for exploring Lucca as well as for visits to Pisa and Florence. Nestled in the Tuscan hills, the house overlooks Lucca in the distance, and its peaceful and serene location is captivating. On the days we did not feel like venturing down to Lucca or further afield, the beautiful patio with its exquisite views over the valley was the perfect place to relax and enjoy a home prepared Tuscan meal. My partner and I greatly look forward to a return visit.
My husband and I and another couple spent a delightful week in May at Casa della Volpe. The property is beautifully maintained, very clean with all amenities, and we were warmly welcomed and shown around by the owners. We really enjoyed doing our shopping at the local stores and setting up housekeeping, feeling comfortably ensconced right from the start. The location is perfect for day trips-to the mountains to take in a medieval festival in Barga, to the coast to enjoy dining on fresh seafood while overlooking the boats in the harbor of Porto Venere, to nearby cities (Lucca, Pisa and Florence). We even took a trip to San Gimignano and on to Monteriggioni in the wine country, a little further, but still doable in a day. The best part of staying at the Fox House is coming home at the end of the day, preparing a simple meal and dining on the terrace overlooking the lights of Lucca far down in the valley. I can't imagine a more lovely vacation spot.
Just the two of us, we searched long and hard and we were rewarded with this beautiful house. We are very used to Tuscan hill village properties so therefore the drive up to the house was neither a surprise or a problem, it was just enough tomake you want that zap of expresso when you finally get to the house! Jeanette even managed to drive both up to the house and back down, on only the second time of driving in Italy!
Thank you Mark & Molly for the beautiful oil, we drizzled it over everything! Great coffee machine, great tuscan stone sink, lounge furniture a little less than comfortable, particularly as we like to sit and read. Mark was very helpful and showed us routes to explore. The charges for electricity and gas were very fair, something we are often caught out with in other places we have stayed.
The house is beautiful, well restored, well equiped and in an idyllic location. Sitting outside watching the sunset over the Lucca plain was fantastic. The eagles soaring over the woods at eye level were a treat! Sitting in the garden you felt very secluded and it is not overlooked at all. But left to admire the tremendous views and dream away a relaxing few hours.
We only used the master bedroom and it was honestly the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in! Beautiful american linen which was superb and cool after a hot day.
A vareity of good food supermarkets or small village shops are a great source of food, all tasting as it should with real flavours.
The screech of the volpe (fox's) at night were great to hear. Once we had worked out what the noise was (with Mark's help)!!
All in all a great return to Tuscany after 3 years away and we will almost certainly be back. To be as remote as you feel but within 20mins of the dreamy streets and alleys of Lucca and be able to walk it's magestic walls at sunrise or sunset was sheer bliss.
The immediate valley itself had some lovely villages to explore, you are not too far from coast, mountains, central Tuscany, the marble quarries of Massa and beyond. An ideal base to discover the North of Tuscany, but close enough to day trip to both Pisa or Florence. Barga to the North of Lucca is another delight within easy reach.
All is all we couldn't fault it, comfortable reading armchairs in the lounge would have made it easily 15/10 score for us!!!
La Casa della Volpe is a delightful 18th Century house which has been tastefully modernised to retain its original charm and character. It is set in the hills above Lucca in a quiet, rural area made up of olive trees, vineyards and woods of chestnut, oak, acacia and arbetrello trees. It is possible to harvest chestnuts in the autumn and find wild mushrooms after the rains, if any, in summer. Violets grow under the olive trees in spring, wild carnations and other wild flowers grow along the roadsides in the summer. The air is fresh. The house looks over to the church and tower of Torre Alto and down to the walled city of Lucca which is about 10 km away. Beaches are half an hour to 45 minutes away, depending on the beach location and traffic. Historic World War II villages are a half-day visit; the Leaning Tower of Pisa is 35 km away. A guide to services and restaurants is provided.
Other Activities: Touring the area and visiting the walled city of Lucca, Florence, Bologna, Cinque Terre. Local horse riding available.
