Garda, once a small fishing village, gave its name to the Lake: „Il Garda“ the short and succinct name the Italians use. Garda lies in the small bay of Punta di San Vigilio, protected by green hills and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Its particularly good location with its wide bay and long beach is certainly the reason, why it became the namesake for the lake as a whole. The eastern shore of the lake, also known as the “Riviera degli Olivi”, stretches 50km long through a magical landscape, where smaller and larger bays alternate and where the lake, narrower in the northern part, opens in the south to form a wide basin. The mountains which edge the lake to the north, start to recede and melt into the Po valley. At the foot of one of these mountain ranges, Garda was founded. On a clear day, one can see from Garda across the whole of the southern lake.
