BEAUTIFUL OLD MILL WITH MODERN INTERIOR

Lucca House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, sleeps 4 to 6

Il Mulinetto is a welcoming and joyous house that lifts the spirits the instant it is entered. Hidden behind a giant spruce, next to a mill stream with seasonal waterfall, the house is entirely private and tranquil. There are no other houses in sight. The old mill served the local inhabitants for generations. It has been converted into a dwelling with great care and affection in 2005 by master craftsmen using traditional materials. It has a fully equipped modern kitchen with a lava grill, dishwasher, five burner hob with oven, etc., two air conditioned, double bedrooms, one with king-sized, one with double beds, both with large, tiled en suite bathrooms, comfortable sleeping and luxurious bathing assured. There is a separate laundry with a washing machine and a dryer. The large sitting room has a stone monastery fireplace, flat screen satellite TV, and an extra sleeping area of 2 single divans with a basement shower room and WC. Fresh herbs grow in the garden area.

Natural Surroundings and Local Activities: Chestnuts can be gathered in abundance in the autumn (late October/early November) and wild porcini mushrooms can be found a few days after rain from June to October but you need to know where to look. Wild flowers grow along the roadsides. There are local festas (sagras) during the summer and the nearest one offers free food and wine. It takes place at the end of July. At others, a modest sum is charged for the theme dish of each sagra. Not many tourists attend these so that it is a pleasant peek into the Italian way of life.

Services and Restaurants: There is a supermarket about 4 km away, also a chemist and hairdresser.

Only 15 minutes drive from the beautiful city of Lucca.

Activities: From a nearby village it is possible to take short horse back rides or two-three day rides into the mountains. Bicycles can be hired in Lucca where it is possible to cycle round the top of the medieval city walls and through the narrow streets of the city. There are many interesting places to walk around the vicinity of Il Mulinetto where the beautiful countryside is on the doorstep.

Wonderful hideaway in the Tuscan hills

  • 5 of 5
What a great relaxing week. The only issue was that the worst rains in 20 years washed out the paved road a few weeks before we arrived. The Mulinetto is about 500 feet above the main road and the 'old road' had many switchbacks and gravel to drive to and from the house. Not too bad, but twice a day in and out was plenty. The rest was pure dolce vita. The house was spotless, great bright kitchen and of course the stream noise trickling by the old mill is soothing. Once on the road, an easy drive to Lucca, Pisa, Viareggio, Montecatini for day trips. My wife had hurt her foot prior to this trip and was on crutches. Mark, our gracious host, arranged for a wheelchair to be delivered to our door and we took it many places in the boot of the car. Thank you so much for a memorable week.

A Tuscan Retreat

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at this property the entire month of May, 2014 – one of the most pleasant and restful vacations we’ve ever experienced. In addition to the spectacular views of Tuscan hillsides this property affords in every direction, the house itself exceeded our expectations. For us, its large, bright, sparking clean kitchen was a big draw because we like to cook; it features an excellent gas range and grill, large refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, and espresso maker – along with generous counter space and all the cookware, dishware, and cutlery we might ever need. We made great use of all of it. Right outside one of the three large kitchen windows is a gently splashing waterfall whose soothing sounds brought a feeling of relaxation and peace to everything we did.
In the big front room with its comfortable, stylish furniture, an original brick archway suggests the age of the house’s original construction as a mill hundreds of years ago. A large window opens directly onto a view of the waterfall, only a few feet away.
Upstairs, the bedrooms and bathrooms are equally impressive: the beds are comfortable and the linens are fresh and crisp; closet space is exceptionally generous; the bathrooms are spacious, with as much hot water as Americans are accustomed to; and large windows everywhere not only brighten the feeling but let in the perfume of the jasmine vine growing up the corner of the house. Down the hall is a laundry room with an excellent new washer and dryer, for which we felt especially thankful.
During our time there, a few rainy days brought cool weather, but the heating system in the house kept us as cozy as we wanted to be. Outside, songbirds celebrated nearly all day long; at night, we were mesmerized by the soft croaking of frogs and the faint dazzle of fireflies. In the midst of all this natural beauty, the outdoor dining area became a favorite spot for many memorable Tuscan-inspired meals.
Our host, Mark, gained our deepest appreciation for his friendliness, his knowledge of the region, his remarkable wit, and his generosity: he brought us freshly harvested potatoes from his garden, freshly picked peas, cherries, and some beautiful brown eggs. Don’t hesitate to engage Mark in conversation – you’ll find he’s one of the most interesting people you may ever meet.

Quiet home from home

  • 5 of 5
If you are looking for nightlife, clubs and restaurants, Il Mulinetto is not for you. If you are looking for an easy access to a beach or a swimming pull, it is not for you either. However, if you are looking for a secluded, private, quiet home from home in the heart of Tuscany's countryside, this is a perfect place.

Il Mulinetto is a great, spacious house. For the British: formally it is a two-bedroom property, but its floor area is twice that of a typical British four-bedroom detached house! Each bedroom has its own large en-suite bathroom with a bath and a double (!) shower. Downstairs, there is a large open living area and a sizeable kitchen-diner. You will find everything you might ever need in the house. The kitchen is well equipped, there is plenty of books to read on those rare rainy days, there is a DVD player and a small TV, but we never used these, as it was much nicer to sit outside and enjoy the sound of the stream, the birds (and the frogs). The downstairs room is cool and shaded, perhaps a bit dark, but gives a welcome relieve from the scorching Italian sun.

There is plenty of shade in front of the house to sit in. The place is very secluded and private, the minor road leading to a village is about 50 yards from the entrance, and you might have an occasional car passing by, but that's all. Anyway, there are hedges and trees isolating the house from the road. There is a good barbecue outside.

Almost all windows have very well fitted mosquito nets, which is a necessity here. You can open your bedroom windows at night and fall asleep to the music of the nearby stream.

You need to be a confident driver to get there. It takes about 6 minutes to drive up the twisting single track from the main road. We decided to beep our horn before some corners with particularly poor visibility (as the locals do). After a few days driving up and down became a habit and even passing the school bus wasn't a big problem.

There is a good supermarket five minutes drive along the main road. They sell excellent bread (pane brutto), the best ham we have ever tried and anything else you might need. The host, Mark, will provide you with olive oil from his own grove.

Mark is a great gentlemen, very welcoming and willing to help in case you need anything. Ask him for advise about where to go, what to see, about restaurants and food. He knows more about Tuscany that many native Italians.

We enjoyed our stay in Il Mulinetto very much!

Amazing property in the Tuscan hills!

  • 5 of 5
Il Mulinetto is a truly spectacular rental property with an owner who really cares about his tenants.

When you arrive at the property all you can say is "Wow!"
We have rented properties in five countries and six U.S. states and none have surpassed Mark's Tuscan rental. Most did not even come close.
The location is wonderfully quiet and it even comes with its own small waterfall in the rear of the house.
The house was exceptionally clean and the amenities as advertised. Having a full sized washer and separate dryer was especially helpful while on an extended vacation.
The kitchen is well equipped and easy to use.
I had read that the internet was spotty, but when used at the desk at the top of the stairs it worked quite well.
We were fortunate that Mark invited us to his home for wine and snacks one evening, even picking us up and driving us back to "our house." As you can imagine, his home is also wonderful.
All in all, we could not have asked for a better place to stay

I will offer only one restaurant recommendation - as almost anyplace in Lucca is good. A short drive (15 km) however brings you to Antica Locanda di Sesto (listed on Tripadvisor). We arrived early, were seated right away, had attentive service and had one of the best meals we have ever had.

Lovely Villa in the Hills of Tuscany

  • 4 of 5
Il Mulinetto is just as advertised. The only surprise is the long and winding road to get to it. But after one or two trips, the turns are less hairy!
As far as the actual villa is concerned, it is a beauty. Very clean and well stocked with dishes, glasses, pots and pans, etc. The beds are very comfortable, pillows too. Showers are delightful. The internet connection was spotty downstairs but there was good reception upstairs.
Mark is a true gentleman, there to meet us on our initial arrival. He showed us the ropes, presented us with a bottle of his own olive oil and invited us up to his home, to be arranged later in the week. He showed us the way to the nearest grocery store and was a great help.
We explored Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Cinque Terre, the Barga region and Montecarlo, Italy that is!
If you value peace and quiet and remoteness, yet being near to built-up areas then consider Il Mulinetto for your next Tuscan holiday.

This is the Place!

  • 5 of 5
Would you like a beautiful setting, spacious, comfortable and spotless accommodation, and a genial owner who is more than happy to help you out of the inevitable "holes" which travelers rarely avoid? Then Il Mulinetto is the place you're looking for. It is near the beautiful walled city of Lucca and close enough for day trips to the highlights of Tuscany and also to the Ligurian coast and the Cinque Terre. Two of us arrived without our luggage and might still be searching for it had Mark not helped arrange delivery from Florence airport. He also wisely gave us an alternative to driving into the center of Florence. You will need a car and to be prepared for the twists and turns of the narrow road up to the property. If that's not a problem, then you are assured of a wonderful experience.

Il Mulinetto di Torre is in an extremely pretty rural area not far from the walled city of Lucca. It is in the foothills of the Apuan Alps. There are many olive groves and vineyards; in fact, the house is set in its own 20 acres of olive trees and woods. There is a winery in the valley below open to visitors. For horse back riders, there is an equestrian centre nearby for rides through the woodlands and along the river for from one hour to three day treks.
