Accomodations: Villa: 4 Bedrooms/4.5 Baths (Sleeps 8-10); Casa: 1 Bedroom/1 Bath (Sleeps 1-2)
Villas Escaleras offer a vacation experience combining comfort and luxury, nestled in lush rainforest, high above the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The properties share a 4.5 acre site, verdant with native trees and plants and, while connected by a paved walking path, are visually separated by dense jungle. Each property features a wraparound veranda, overlooking its own swimming pool, a huge jungle valley teeming with wildlife and the Pacific Ocean, with its stunning sunsets, just beyond.
Both verandas are furnished with plenty of hammocks, bamboo lounges and hammock chairs so everyone in your group can relax and watch the languid daily activity of the tropics, toucans and other colorful birds gliding by, troops of howler and white-faced monkeys swinging in the trees, coati mundis and javelinas foraging for food below and the occasional sloth just hanging around. If the season is right, you may see a pod of humpbacked or pilot whales, sounding, broaching and spouting water as they make their way down the coast to their breeding grounds in nearby Drake Bay. All the while, the soothing sounds of the surf on the beach, water rushing in nearby streams, birds and tree frogs calling and cicadas humming, will fill your ears with the sound of the tropics.
If your idea of a vacation calls for more action, use the Villas as your base to make forays, usually of 10 minutes or less, to any of a dozen or so area beaches for swimming, surfing, fishing, kayaking, shelling or just exploring, to visit the nearby Hacienda Baru or Rancho Merced wildlife refuges for nature tours, afoot or by horseback, zipline and canopy tours and birdwatching, to arrange for a horseback ride to a nearby waterfall, a sport fishing excursion, both inshore and in deep water, a day of exploration by kayak in the mangroves or along a part of the coast which is laced with caves and caverns or snorkeling, SCUBA diving or whale watching in Uvita's Marina Ballena national park or more distant Cano Island National Preserve. Shopping, banking (including ATMs), fine and budget dining and night life are available in Dominical and Uvita, both within a 10 minute drive from the Villas.
The Villa's three interior levels include four spacious bedroom suites, each with a full bath, large, fully-equipped kitchen with custom cabinetry and new, General Electric appliances and a Great Room with vaulted ceiling, large (12 person) dining table, custom bar and media alcove. The Casa includes a living room and sleeping mezzanine with 18'ceilings, galley kitchen and full bath. Both feature rare and beautiful tropical hardwood appointments and Spanish tile floors throughout, tasteful custom furnishings in the traditional Central American style, incorporating natural fabrics from Guatemala and Peru. Walls are decorated with Latin American art as well as prints, paintings and photos by commercial artists and photographers who have stayed with us in the past.
Guests may access an extensive library of books and CDs, satellite TV, DVD players, ipod-accessible stereo CD and tape players, telephone, desktop computer with high speed Internet access through a wireless network and full laundry facilities. Linens and towels, including pool/beach towels, are provided. Smoker/barbecue, pool toys, spotting scope, binoculars, walkie-talkies, field guides for animal and bird recognition, are also available for guest use.
It's all about comfort and luxury . . . come see for yourself.
What do you see in your minds eye when considering a visit to Costa Rica? Toucans, monkeys, poison dart frogs, Jesus Christ lizards and verdant jungle all the while sharing views and sounds of the ocean and rivers- right? Well this is exactly what you will find with a stay at Villa Escaleras. We awoke the first morning with the calls and visits from 3 types of toucans. Upon our first venture down the San Martin road we encountered a troupe of Howler Monkeys. This all within the first 12 hours of our arrival. what we found upon our arrival and stay exceeded our expectations.
My wife and I shared two weeks in the Costa Rican atmosphere and enjoyed every minute. The locals have a terrific outlook on life and are truly friendly and helpful with giving ideas for areas to explore. We have travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean, North America and Europe and this was definitely one of our most relaxing and fulfilling vacations. the beaches are minutes away, grocery stores and restaurants also are convenient but the best part was just enjoying the view from the Villa. We are already planning when we might return but this time we want our friends to join us as it is just a spectacularly relaxing environment.
We took our kids (ages 13 and 14) for an extended spring break to this villa and plan on returning the first chance we get. This villa was everything we read about on the website. It was beautiful and the owner's made sure our every need was met including recommending local activities. The views were gorgeous and our kids loved the location on top of Mt. Diablo (as locals call the road if you choose to run it). Our favorite time was evenings on the deck sitting in hammocks listening to the rainforest sounds and watching a beautiful sunset over the ocean. When you are at the villa it seems so quiet and serene, aside from the animal noises, but only a short (albeit steep) trek down the hill and you enter a tropical vacation paradise. I would recommend renting a vehicle meant for hills. While swimming (in a waterfall) and a local popular restaurant were within walking distance from the villa, grocery stores, beaches with swimming, surfing, paddle boarding, restaurants, and shopping as well as locations for zip lining, horseback riding, and many other local attractions were a short car ride away. The owners had a list of recommendations which made our planning easier. The property and pools were well maintained for those who prefer non-beach swimming. We are already planning a return trip in the next year or two. Definitely one of our best vacations.
Villas Escaleras is the perfect escape from your daily life. I went with a group of 10 people and some of us stayed in the 'big house', while my husband and I stayed in the 'casa'. Both of the properties were beautiful and comfortable. Each has it's own pool and full kitchen.
The casa feels like you are in your own tree house as the majority of the walls are screened in and you are in the middle of the jungle overlooking ocean. Words can't describe the ambiance, it's truly breathtaking.
The big house has a wonderful outdoor area and patio with multiple hammocks. There are 4 spacious bedrooms with plenty of space for everyone. There's a library with both music and books for guests to use! There's a wet bar separate from the kitchen which was convenient for our group. All of the cooking essentials are there so you can just run to the store and get your groceries to cook.
Dennis, one of the owners is extremely helpful and will answer any and all questions you have about the house or what there is to do in the area. We did excursions almost daily, which included - diving at the national park, diving and snorkeling at Cano Island, ziplining, kayaking in the mangroves, surfing, hiking/boat ride, bungee jumping, and hung out at the beautiful beaches! Yes - we did a lot! Almost every place Dennis recommended was a local company that works with you and had affordable prices.
You do need a car in this area, especially one with 4WD, we used the car rental company that Dennis recommended (Tricolor Car Rental) and they were fantastic! This was the best vacation everyone in our group had ever had. We can't wait to go back.
