Saint-Martin-d'Oydes Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description
Sleeps 17 in 6 bedrooms (5 ensuite). 15th century chateau lying beside the sleepy little bastide village of St Martin d'Oydes amid the gently rolling foothills of the Pyrenees. Utterly romantic yet very comfortable, it is surrounded by a beautiful 5 acre private park with fenced 12m pool and pigeonniere. The whole area is wonderful walking country and is steeped in history. Post office and hard tennis court in the village.
The chateau, which lies among the gently rolling foothills of the Pyrenees, was built at the end of the 15th century of the mellow pink brick for which Toulouse and Albi are so well known. It has been completely restored to combine its historic charm with modern comfort and convenience and stands in its own park immediately adjacent to the very small and ancient village of St Martin d’Oydes. With 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and 5 'public' rooms there is ample accommodation for up to 15 people without feeling crowded. It is furnished with solid country antiques so the atmosphere is very much that of a comfortable family house. Because the walls are very thick, the rooms are cool in summer but cosy in winter. The chateau is very suitable for 2 or 3 families sharing or for large family gatherings - recently it has hosted several seventieth birthday celebrations - and is very child-friendly. The 5 acre park with lovely fully-fenced 12 x 6.5m pool and brick pigeonnere is beautifully landscaped.

Our village has a post-office open mornings only. There is a hard tennis court a minute or so from our front gate available for your use. Le Fossat (8-10 minutes drive) has a small supermarket with butcher/charcuterie, baker, pharmacy, general store, garage, post-office, bank, doctor There are also 2 simple French restaurants and a Thai restaurant. The supermarket, baker and general store are open on Sunday mornings but most of Le Fossat is closed on Mondays.
Lezat sur Leze 15-20 mins has a fair sized supermarket, a fruit and veg shop which also sells organic goods including cheese and dry goods. These are all open on Sunday mornings. In addition there is the normal range of small shops, bakers etc and a newsagent which stocks English newspapers. Pamiers 20-25 mins is our nearest big town and has a full range of shops and services and a number of decent restaurants. There are local markets on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
The whole area is steeped in history from the neolithic cavemen to the Saracens to the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade to the Wars of Religion down to the Second World War - one of the escape routes for allied servicemen over the Pyrenees is now a long distance footpath. Artigat, the home of the real life Martin Guerre, lies in the next valley over the hills.
There are also plenty of outside options if you feel energetic. There are some delightful walks in the surrounding countryside and plenty of real challenges further into the mountains. You can borrow our bikes. The public hard tennis court a few minutes from our main gate is rarely used and we can lend you the key. There are all sorts of other activities available in the general area - a park with tree-top walks, a small zoo, skiing (about 1hr's drive), horse-riding, kayaking, rock-climbing and even, we have been told, gold-panning.
Book directly with owners. A deposit of 25% of the rental is payable on booking and the balance 8 weeks before the start of the holiday.
