Dr. Laszlo Varro
We spent 9 days at this house over the New Year. Over the past 10 years, we have rented more than fifty country houses around Europe for various family holidays and I don't hesitate to say that we found this Croatian house among the best. There is nothing fancy about the building, but it is evident that the owners really care about it. The house is equipped with all forms of modern conveniences (the kitchen even has a deli slicer), the cupboard and shelves are full of provisions (coffee, tea, spices, etc.), the two rooms upstairs provide full privacy, and the two bathrooms served our family of five perfectly well. Outside there are terraces facing four directions with views to the sea and the forest. One terrace is partially enclosed and hosts a huge grill/barbecue area. There is a small swimming pool, although given the time of our visit we could not take advantage of it.
We also enjoyed the location. It is extremely quiet, yet only 10 minutes away from the unlimited supply of restaurants and bars in Opatija and Rijeka. There is a small grocery store within walking distance for daily provisions, with a small village pub and restaurant next to it. Hiking trails of Ucka National Park run by the house and there are some mountain-style restaurants serving venison dishes a 5-minute drive away towards the pass.
The arrival is made simple by the local caretaker, Robert, who explained everything in a few minutes and promised to be on call for 24 hours. We never needed him as everything worked perfectly.
If there is anything that I can criticize it is the speed of internet service. Perhaps most people don't care about it, but we had three university kids with us who had to prepare for their exams and accessing information at times was slow and frustrating. In any case, it was a minor issue, not really affecting our overall opinion that this is an excellent place to enjoy a restful holiday.
