Further Details:
Kas is located on the narrow coastal strip between the Mediterranean Sea and the Taurus Mountains. The mountains rise above the town and protect it from the winter winds, giving a mild year round climate. Unlike overdeveloped Spain, this coast is still largely wild and unspoilt, and generally much cheaper.
Kas is a regional town rather than a tourist resort, it has small but well stocked super markets, a large range of shops, banks, bakeries, nightlife, and beach areas. The town has about 8000 permanent inhabitants and is large enough to be able to offer a wide range of sporting facilities. It is a relaxing, picturesque and friendly town with a rich archaeological history. A highlight of the week is the regular Friday market which is always a good place to buy meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and locally made produce at bargain prices. The older part of the town is a hillside cluster of Greek and Ottoman style buildings with traditional balconies and stone-paved streets.
The regional tourist office is located in Kas and can provide information on the local area plus its tourist attractions and historic sites. The local economy is not wholly dependent on tourism and provides both locals and visitors a thriving environment to live in and enjoy at any time of year. Restaurants and bars stay open during the winter months very few close at the end of the summer season.
The harbour offers mooring for a range of vessels including fishing boats, private yachts, diving boats and the cruise boats (gullets) which can be chartered to tour the beautiful coastline by the hour or by the day. Many of the gullets have glass bottoms which makes for a fascinating trip.
Typical of the Mediterranean region, the summers are hot and dry, and can reach around 35 degrees during the day. Winters are warm during the day but can get cool at night. The winter temperatures often drop below 10 degrees and the winter months can be rainy.
