A few notes to the Ria Formosa national park:
'Ria' means lagoon, i.e. behind the shelter of a chain of low lying barrier islands there is a labyrinth of waterways, small islets and salt marches, which changes with the tides constantly. The Ria Formosa with its area of 18000 hectares is a sanctuary of international importance for a vast number of birds, as well as a nursery for unnumbered fish species of the open ocean. The flora of the dunes and salt marches is highly specialized with many endemic species.
Here a list of just some of the birds, you can observe here: ( unfortunately in latin!)
Egretta garzetta, Platalea leucorodia, Ciconia ciconia, Phoenicopterus ruber, Porphyrio porphyrio, Haematopus ostralegus, Himantopus himantopus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Charadrius spec., Pluvialis squatarola, Calidris alpina/ minuta/ alba, Arenaria interpres, Tringa totanus/ nebularia,.......
Two other specialities should be mentioned: the Ria is home to a small population of chamaeleons and is Europe´s biggest pasture for seahorses !
