Sanguinet (2 mins walk) is a picturesque little village in the heart of the largest pine forest in Europe on the banks of the magnificent lake of Cazaux-Sanguinet (5 mins walk), which measures 11km long and 10km wide. The scenic paths and cycle ways provide great opportunities to explore the local area. There are numerous white sandy beaches on the lakeside sheltered by pine trees and with safe warm bathing in clean fresh water. Water sports and activities are available locally including canoing, boating, waterskiing, windsurfing and fishing. There are several sailing clubs with instruction available. Bisca' Plage, Bisca' Ville and surrounding area:
Biscarosse (a short drive by car) has much to offer and is a real hive of activity with a wide selection of interesting shops, restaurants and cafes. The magnificent beach has 10km of white sandy expanse with lifeguards supervising safe bathing and with big breakers offering challenge and excitement to novice and expert surfers and body-boarders.
There is much to see and discover in and around the area and many different facilities and activities on offer including golf, horse riding, boat rides, nature trails, sand yachting, diving and several local leisure and adventure parks. The enthusiastic and friendly staff at the local Tourist Information Centre can answer all your enquiries.
The sand dunes at nearby Dune du Pyla are absolutely spectacular and at 117m high are the biggest in Europe.
Arcachon is 20 minutes by car with lovely beach, harbour and fashionable restaurants and shops. There is a great boat trip around the lovely Bassin D'Arcachon including a visit to Cap Ferret.
Bordeaux, the vineyards and other things to do:
Bordeaux (40 minutes drive) is a beautiful, historic and lively city with much heritage and lots of amenities. There is something for everyone from shops and theatre to harbour-front, magnificent gothic cathedral and beautiful architecture. The old quarter featuring narrow streets and medieval gateways houses the local artisans' shops.
There is also much to explore in the beautiful areas surrounding Bordeaux including the fantastic historic hilltop village of St Emillion. The world famous vineyards and chateaux of Bordeaux are in abundance in the region and many offer tasting and tours and welcome you to stop and buy direct.
A visit across the border to Spain is about 90 minutes drive by car and makes a popular day trip.
There is a local Jazz festival in Sanguinet in July and other Gastronomic, Flower and Craft Fetes and Sailing Regattas in the area throughout the summer. The local mayor of Sanguinet organises dances and fun in the open air on Saturdays during the summer.
