We found this houseboat to be just as it was described in the listing. It had everything that you need (washer and dryer were very helpful). It was spacious and clean, and Mirko, the owner was very friendly and helpful. It is in the perfect location- close to everything you want to see, and very close to central station. My personal favorites in Amsterdam were the Anne Frank House and the Van Gough Museum. I would highly recommend this rental if you are traveling to Amsterdam. It is spacious, charming, neat, clean, and ideally located.

Comfortable with Great Location

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in this houseboat for 5 days. We found it very comfortable and relaxing. It is close enough to the train and tram stops to access the entire city, while quiet enough for peaceful rest and relaxation. The owner was awesome and very helpful to orienting us to the city and responsive to other questions or requests. We really enjoyed all the amenities the houseboat had to offer. It was a great home away from home. We would stay here again!

Great location but needs a refresh

  • 4 of 5
We had most everything we needed and the location couldn't be beat as it just a short walk from the train station. The tour boats come by every few minutes during the day and their faces lit up when they realized that people actually were living on the canals.
There are a couple of items that could be addressed that would make this place better. There is mold around all of the windows and in the corner of the bedroom that needs to be addressed. The window shaded and blinds need to be replaced or cleaned to remove the dead bugs that have been rolled up in them. The mildew also needs to be cleaned from the bench and front entry area of the boat to make it more welcoming. Painting the inside and out also needs to be done as this boat is starting to need attention. There was only 1 champagne glass so we purchased a set and left them for the next renter. We also purchased a cheese plane for the boat as we enjoyed the Gouda and Edam cheeses from the market square that's just a short walk away.
We did feel like this was our home for our 2 week stay and having perfect weather didn't hurt our experience.

Owner's Response: Dear Bill & Bob,

Thank you for your review.

We replace the roller blinds every three years. You are right, this needs to be done again.
The windows and frames get cleaned regularly. This may have been omitted once in your case in light of your early arrival after checking out of the Hilton hotel.
We have stocked the boat with wine glasses; if there was one champagne glass it was left in the cupboard by previous guests.
I don’t understand which mouldy “corner of the bedroom” you refer to. I cannot find it
I hope you can clarify this for me.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here with our 2 year old son and absolutely loved it! We're looking forward to coming back to stay here again. Mirko is a generous and helpful host and the houseboat is just wonderful. It's bright, spacious, tranquil, and gives a sense of independence. We were also perfectly happy to just stay aboard and relax during the frequent rain- the other reviewers who recommend bringing decent rain gear are right, especially if you plan to cycle! A great combination of peace and spaciousness right in the heart of the city. I couldn't recommend this houseboat enough, we felt very at home. It also proved to be secure for a small toddler with lots of energy as the deck is past the front door and the windows are relatively high. The location's excellent, you can get your bearings easily and quickly.

Only way to go!

  • 5 of 5
My Wife and I just had an excellent experience on Mirko's Houseboat!!! It truly is the only way to go!!! The boat was in a perfect location (5 minute walk to Central Station), very clean, roomy and the best overall location to tour Amsterdam.

There are great restaurants a few steps around the corner and a great Pub across from the boat that's cool for a night-cap...

This was our first experience renting a houseboat and we couldn't have had a better time and a better host in Mirko!

P.S., Bring a light jacket, as it was chilly and sometimes rainy. We probably should have packed a few more long sleeve shirts...

Amazing Affordable Experience

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I rented this houseboat for a week, and we were so glad we did! Mirko was very hospitable and helped us to get acquainted with our location (having just arrived all groggy from the overnight flight). The furnishings are simple but comfortable and functional. The bed was delightful - it was a bit challenging to get out of bed in the morning!

The houseboat has pretty much everything you could possibly need including a clothes washer and dryer (really helped us to pack light!), dishwasher, stocked kitchen for basic cooking (we ate breakfast and several dinners on the boat and saved $$$ - the grocery store is only a five minute walk away), TV with cable - including BBC and CNN (just in case you fancy staying plugged in to the stress-inducing news events of the day), and a large dining table directly under one of the houseboat windows that looks out over the charming arched bridge directly beside the houseboat.

I don't think there's a better way to stay in Amsterdam than on a houseboat. The perspective you get from being on the canal (and eight feet or so below the bicycle and street traffic buzzing around you) is unforgettable, nor is the curious looks you get from passing tourist boats that cruise by the houseboat and under the arched bridge from roughly 9am to 5pm each day. Plus there are numerous other houseboats moored on either side of you with authentic Amsterdam residents who are going about their day. When a boat passes by, the houseboat gently sways side-to-side for a few minutes and then subsides - how awesome is that! All other times, you'd never know that you were on a boat.

Up on the street level directly next to the houseboat is a delightful corner pub and cafe that serves pilsner for $3 a glass and is decidedly a local hangout. I went there several nights and didn't meet a single tourist even though the houseboat is only steps away from the central train station and the red light district. The locals in the pub received me quite well (and this is all just up the stairs from the houseboat! - when you are tired you just say good night and walk down the stairs on to your houseboat!)

The houseboat couldn't be in a better location. Like I said it is only five minutes or so walk to central train station, less than five minutes to an economical grocery store (a can of lager is $1.25, spaghetti is less than $2 a bag, fruit and vegetables are very reasonable). Don't stay in a hotel. Stay here instead!

Amsterdam has a lot to offer. With the canals and the picturesque buildings from the 17th century, it is perfect for long walks or for a cruise, as offered from many departure points throughout the city. There are a lot of old churches, squares and cafes. Amsterdam has more than 50 galleries and renowned museums, like the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijks Museum. Live music, theatre and shopping options and a rich night lift are offered. There is also a variety of markets: flea markets, (biological) vegetable markets, flower and fish markets... you will find them all over the entire city. In short: it is one of the best cities to spend a holiday. Of course, you can rent a small boat or bicycles in order to discover the historical city in an authentic way.
