Deer Meadow was my parent's vacation home for 20+ years. It has been passed down to the next generation with many fond memories. The current owner and 6th child in a family of seven spent every summer vacation as a child on Mount Desert Island and moved here permanently 16 years ago leaving an advertising career in NYC for a more natural lifestyle in Maine. Upon moving to Maine she worked as the assistant manager at the Historic Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor for 12 years and now spends summers gardening.

Janet Madeira purchased this farmhouse in 1990

Southwest Harbor retains the qualities of a small New England Town and offers peace and quiet with easy access to land and sea. With a love for sailing and hiking, Southwest Harbor offers peace and quiet and easy access to these activities and many others throughout the seasons.

This home is situated in a quiet residential area, but close to town. There is a simple elegance to the home which is welcoming to families and friends. The property offers enough space for privacy and nice leans for outdoor games, picnics and a back porch for coffee with a sunrise or a toast to sunset.

Loved our stay on the quiet side of MDI!

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at Dear Meadow was terrific! The house was very clean, in a quiet neighborhood and located near (or a short drive away) from all of the hiking, biking, kayaking and just site-seeing we had planned to do in Acadia National Park!

We would definitely stay in this house again. We preferred the quieter side of MDI and appreciated the amenities of the house (fully equipped kitchen, laundry, and space to relax!).

The owner is very kind and clearly enjoys sharing her love of MDI and Acadia by offering suggestions of activities and information. She consistently answered our questions and seemed to genuinely care about our family trip! She even left fresh cut flowers from the garden on the tables for us to enjoy!

Finally, my family appreciated walking across the street for fresh baked cookies and treats at the Manset Little Farm! My children are sad that they are not eating fresh baked cookies everyday now that we are back from our trip!

We highly recommend a trip to Acadia with a stay on the quiet side!

Historic charm abounds!

  • 5 of 5
We recently spent a wonderful week at Deer Meadow. The location worked out
well for us; about 2 miles south of Southwest Harbor village and walking
distance to the Island Explorer stop at the Manset dock. The Seawall,
Wonder Land and Ship Harbor Trails are all a short drive away and are great
options for scenic late afternoon walks. The house is lovely--roomy, very clean and
well equipped. The homeowner is very attentive to detail. One of the
best rental experiences we've had!

Adorable vacation home!

  • 5 of 5
We just spent a summer week at Deer Meadow and loved it! The pictures were a true depiction of the home. It is in a beautiful setting, with a meadow right behind it. It is very neat and clean, with beautiful antiques throughout. It is very close to Acadia National Park, as well Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor. There are plenty of activities in close proximity to the house. We would definitely recommend this house for a fun Maine vacation!

There are several gardens on the island, The Asticou Azalea Garden, Thuya and the Rockefeller Gardens. Contact the Mount Desert Island Garden Preserve for details.

In addition to the many outdoor activities there are festivals, concerts, lectures, and events throughout the summer. Various galleries, theatre and museums. Children enjoy the oceanarium, miniature golf and Sand Beach.
