Discover how to REALLY relax!
Would you like to relax in your own peaceful private pool, while contemplating the vast expanse of the ocean right in front of you - amazing whales, spinner dolphins and colorful fish, the sunsets, and complete serenity, for less than the price of a resort hotel room? Then you will love our place.
Our home has one bedroom, 1.5 baths, plus an outdoor shower/toilet. Kitchen and living area are open and roomy. Bedroom and living room glass french doors open to the ocean view and breeze. Wrap-around lanai and small in-ground pool.
Get-away-from-it all seclusion but only 25 minutes to the nearest grocery store and beaches.
We just purchased this house from our friend Rick, and it has never been used as a vacation rental- just a second home. We have always loved the house and the magical coast of Milolii. We hope you love it as much as we do!
Hawaii License number is W26310508-01
We currently live in the small town of Angels Camp in California's famed Gold Country. Angels Camp is home of the famous Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee. We own a fishing store on New Melones Reservoir called Glory Hole Sports (www.gloryholesports.com), after the Glory Hole Gold Mine that once operated here, and is now under the lake. We love to fish, and spend lots of time on New Melones Lake. When we are in Hawaii, we love to fish off the cliff right in front of the house.
Angels Camp is a small town, and we love it. The Big Island has that same small-town feel. Everyone is so friendly, and there is no hustle and bustle.
We have been married 30+ years, and have a beautiful grown daughter, Sarah. We have always loved Hawaii, and take several trips a year there. We have made amazing friends there over the years. We hope to be able to move to Hawaii someday.
Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this house in 2014
Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the house shows his artistic flair and creativity.
We have always loved Rick’s Place, Milolii and all the wonderful people we have met there. We are thankful to Rick, who agreed to sell us our favorite place on earth, and our friends in Hawaii, who have helped us to make this dream come true.
We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.
The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect.
This was one of our best vacations and Ricks Place was a perfect place to stay. The location is awesome, right on the water and very private. We saw whales from the back deck and the best snorkeling is right down the road. We had a great time and the house is everything as described and more. The owners were great to work with and we will definitely be back! Thanks to Dan and Melanie for renting out their beautiful home.
Having been to the Big Island before, I thought we knew what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised to find that this quaint, out of the way, little village of Milolii far exceeded any expectations!
Since we do not care for tourist area's and commercial type property, we were happy to find Ricks Place. The home is charming, nicely decorated, and very inviting. Many past guests give rave reviews on the outdoor shower, which are well deserved, however; we found the indoor shower to be absolutely luxurious, from the shower head position on the ceiling, to the decor and open parts of the shower stall itself.
The absolute highlight of the home was the whales we saw EVERY SINGLE DAY during our stay! Dolphins too! Forget the expensive tours, you get quite a show from Rick's Place. One morning they entertained us for two hours straight!
The sound of the waves crashing into the lava wall out in front is so peaceful and relaxing, we soaked it all in every morning while drinking Hawaii's amazing Kona coffee! If you like to snorkel, there is a wonderful entrance to the water within walking distance, and the coral and sea life are superb!
With the well stocked kitchen, bath and beach towels, toiletry items, coolers, washer and dryer, there is very little you need to bring from home! Wifi worked great, and our Verizon phones had good service at the house, although there are some spots driving down to the home that service was spotty.
The only thing we could say was somewhat unexpected was the very long and windy drive down from the main road to the house itself. We got used to it, but be prepared for a long and somewhat tedious ride.
We plan on returning for sure, 7 days was not near long enough to explore the island AND enjoy the home....its so comfortable to just hang out on the lanai that you really do not want to leave! Thank you Melanie and Dan for trusting this special home and all that is in it to us!
This amazing seaside location was a wonderful place to stay on the Big Island of Hawaii. The "whale watching" deck was amazing as we saw many whales during our stay. The space was airy, bright and comfortable. There were many extras that allowed for a great stay including a wonderful kitchen, comfortable bed and it's own pool and deck. We would definitely recommend this place for a vacation. The only downside was that during our stay the neighbouring house had a large, loud group of people partying beyond our usual bedtime. Definitely beyond our hosts control. Thanks for a great place to relax during our vacation.
Rick's place is awesome! I have stayed on the bid island the last six years and can honestly say this is the nicest home I have been in. All the other homes where very nice but, this one is special. The attention to detail the ease of use and aesthetic are fantastic. The house comes nicely stocked with plenty of extras you don't usually get. Paper products, sunscreen, beach and snorkeling accessories, shampoo, body wash etc..... It was our honeymoon and we wanted a place with privacy and this home was perfect. Thank you Dan and Melanie it was a most wonderful stay.
We stayed here for 8 days and despite the 8 days of rain we had a wonderful time. The house is perfect. You have your own pool and gas grill which was great. There is a wine rack there with wine for you to use and replace and the cupboards had all you need for cooking. The whales are so close you can hear them breathe. That was awesome. It's a long narrow road to get there but it really wasn't very hard to navigate. We read a lot of books and watched for dolphins and whales. We did do some sightseeing but really enjoyed staying at the house. Her on site manager was great and responded very quickly if we needed something. Would definitely recommend this home to anyone.
The house is everything that you see in pictures, the deck was spectacular beautiful sunsets, whales all day everyday, we even saw the Hammer Head Sharks and some Dolphins. We have never been to Hawaii before and we pictured this lush green tropical paridise so being on the lava flow was a bit surprising, however watching the waves crash against the rocks is unbelievable. The location is remote but we travel the whole Island which has many Eco systems. The only drawback was the pool was to cold to use except for to put your feet in, being warmer would have made our deck time much more enjoyable, however the owner has told us that they are putting in solar heat in April which would make this a big plus for us. Thanks Rob & Leslie
The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
