We currently live in the small town of Angels Camp in California's famed Gold Country. Angels Camp is home of the famous Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee. We own a fishing store on New Melones Reservoir called Glory Hole Sports (www.gloryholesports.com), after the Glory Hole Gold Mine that once operated here, and is now under the lake. We love to fish, and spend lots of time on New Melones Lake. When we are in Hawaii, we love to fish off the cliff right in front of the house.

Angels Camp is a small town, and we love it. The Big Island has that same small-town feel. Everyone is so friendly, and there is no hustle and bustle.

We have been married 30+ years, and have a beautiful grown daughter, Sarah. We have always loved Hawaii, and take several trips a year there. We have made amazing friends there over the years. We hope to be able to move to Hawaii someday.

Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this house in 2014

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the house shows his artistic flair and creativity.

We have always loved Rick’s Place, Milolii and all the wonderful people we have met there. We are thankful to Rick, who agreed to sell us our favorite place on earth, and our friends in Hawaii, who have helped us to make this dream come true.

We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.

The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect.

awesome place, big hill

  • 4 of 5
The house is awesome. We especially liked the outdoor shower and the beautiful lanai overlooking the ocean. It was stocked with all kitchen supplies that we needed and towels and even snorkeling gear! However, the only downside is the hill going down into milollii. It is very long, winding, and steep. We recommend this place.

Love this place

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I celebrated our honeymoon here and absolutely LOVED it! It far exceeded our expectations. Beautiful view, great kitchen, amazing view and so quiet. The owners are so nice and very helpful. It is somewhat remote which worked for us. If you're looking to stay away from the tourists, this is your place!

Excellent house to relax and getaway

  • 5 of 5
The house was excellent - exactly as the pictures portray it. The house is very cosy and homey, and well decorated and comes with everything you could want in a vacation home. It is just the right size for a couple, and maybe 1 child - depending on age.
You are right on the water, and the front of the house opens up with 6 french doors to let in the island breezes.
The pool is a nice size for 2 maybe 4 people, when we stayed it was a little cold, so we could only really use it one day, but was still very nice.
There was a very nice black sand beach about a 30 min walk from the house - don't go on weekends, the locals set-up camp on it, and while they were friendly, they obviously did not want us there. We went again on a beautiful Monday, and were the only ones on the beach.
A couple of things to be aware of - not detracting from the house - but to be aware of: The house is located near Milioli'i - pretty remote - worked for us as we wanted a getaway. The water is not really drinkable, so bring plenty with you - we went through 70 bottles in 5 days. The house is about 45 miles (but 90 minutes) from Kailua-Kona, so access to stores/shopping is not very good so stock-up on your way to the house. (There is a store about 8 miles south -Malama market - which was actually pretty good. You are closer to some of the south island sights - Volcano Park South point, etc., which makes for a nice day trip.
The access road was a little dicey - you are going from 1500 feet elevation basically to the ocean along a 3 1/2 mile curvy narrow road, with a lot of blind corners and few guard rails. We took it slow and had no problems, but we learned quickly you want to plan your in and outs - we chose not to drive it at night.

Owner's Response: HI, Jake,

Thank you for your very honest and detailed review. What you say is exactly true- the place is perfect for a romantic getaway, and as a base for day-sightseeing trips. Running into town is not something you want to do twice a day though! Like you said, plan your trips in and out, and count on relaxing at the house without leaving on some days.

A Milolii stay is very different than most Hawaiian vacations- that is why we make a point of speaking with every potential guest.

Because it is not in a city, our water is cachement (caught off the roof) or trucked in (very common to many neighborhoods on the Big Island). It is treated and run through two filters before it hits the house. We still recommend drinking bottled water- we provide you a case to get started, but you should bring more.

Malama Market in Ocean View is where we shop too, unless we are going to Kailua-Kona or Captain Cook for something. They have great produce, and a good bakery.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your stay.

Beautiful, Quaint Ocean Home

  • 5 of 5
First off the owners are AMAZING!!! They are helpful and respond quickly with any questions we had or recommendations. The place itself is a gem! It was perfect for my friend and I. We normally go for bigger places, because those are the ones with amazing views and such, but this place is PERFECT for 2 and has amazing views. It is far enough from the big city to be quiet yet close enough that you can easily get to the beaches in the city or to volcano park. It was great to shower after a long day in the outdoor shower at night with the tiki light on then make dinner and drinks and sit under the stars with a little breeze and eat! I will admit it felt weird the first night to leave the screen doors open to let the breeze in but it was amazing especially to wake up to! It was a perfect getaway in a perfect place with perfect hosts! I definitely recommend this place! I know if I ever come back to the big island I am planning on staying here again!

Milolii Oceanfront

  • 4 of 5
This was one of the most relaxing vacations ever. The oceanfront location is far away from any tourist development and wonderfully quiet. The house invites you to be casual and relax. We spent lots of time on the lanei gazing at the ocean and watching the whales, sunsets and stars.

We would come back in a heartbeat. Great support from the owners too.

Mamalahoa Hwy
Car: necessary

The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
