Our two bedroom cottage is nestled in the rain forest 30 minutes south of Hilo. It’s private and secluded yet centrally located for all that the Puna district has to offer.
The ¼ acre property is surrounded by large Eucalyptus, Ohia and Avacado trees. Nestled amongst those are a large variety of plants and fruits including: bananas, pineapples, pomelos, tangerines and many ornamentals.
The cottage comfortably sleeps 2-4 people and has two bedrooms. The front bedroom is off the kitchen, has a full sized bed, a private sliding glass door to the front lanai and direct access to the bathroom. There is a folding screen that can be used for extra privacy from the rest of the house. The back bedroom is entered through the french doors, has a queen sized bed, and private access to the backyard.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, stove, microwave, dishes, all cooking dishes and utensils as well as some of my favorite cookbooks. We have a satellite TV, DVDs, CDs, books and internet for your at home entertainment. There is a boogie board and snorkel gear as well as beach towels for your outdoor adventures.
Enjoy day outings to Warm Ponds, Tide Pools, Volcano National Park and numerous farmers markets, then come home to your tropical getaway and fall asleep to the lulling songs of the coqui frogs.

I'm Emily. I instantly fell in love with the island the first time I was here and left with one goal in mind, to find that perfect piece of property and move as soon as possible. Only several months later did i find Hibiscus Cottage and couldn't believe how lucky I was. I hope to someday move here, in the meantime I want to share our little slice of heaven with you. I live in Boulder City Nevada just outside of Las Vegas and am a Stage Manager at Cirque du Soleil.
I hope you enjoy the cottage as much as I do.
Emily Carr purchased this cottage in 2013
We needed a place to stay for Merrie Monarch weekend. Anyone familiar w/ the festival knows that most of Hilo and the neighboring towns are booked MONTHS, even a year in advance! We were lucky enough to score the Hibiscus Cottage 3 months prior to Merrie Monarch. It was the perfect retreat after a day out and a night at the festival! It fit 3 of us very comfortably! Emily has tons of extras for guest to use like umbrellas (which you will most definitely need in Hilo!), folding chairs, boogie boards, and snorkeling gear.
The bathroom was very clean and had tons of TP and even some sunscreen and bug repellent in the vanity. We never seemed to run out of hot water, even w/ the 3 of us showering back to back.
Unfortunately the cable was out during our stay, but she has a small DVD collection that we enjoyed when were home.
It's so great to have kitchen during a vacation and we bought some frozen meals at the store to enjoy when we were "home." We were able to bring home and reheat left overs and there are dishes for any food you prepare at home.
We will definitely look to book the Hibiscus Cottage again!
We stayed at the Hibiscus cottage for the first month of our move to big island. Our first vacation rental was damaged in the hurricane so we had to find a new one at very short notice. Luckily we found this place, Emily was very kind and accommodating. The rental was beautiful and had everything we needed since we moved with only what we could fit in suitcases. The location was also great, close to the Makuu farmers market and only a few short miles to Pahoa town. I definitely recommend this rental to anyone looking to explore the Puna district.
My wife and I stay at the house for nearly a month and totally enjoyed the house, yard and area. The house is situated in a very quite area and allows you to enjoy the cool tropical atmosphere. The interior is very tasteful and has everything you need. Great place to stay and plan out the places you want to see. Would like to thank Emily for her assistance and for allowing my wife and I to stay at her little bit of tropical paradise. Oh, almost forgot there is big avocado tree outside the left side of the house provided us with a daily supply of avocado's that tasted great. My wife even took 10 of them back to China so her family could enjoy them.
We spent a few nights in this lovely cozy cottage. It was hard to find that first night because it is so dark once the sun goes down. However, dark was good for sleeping! The cottage is surrounded by wonderful plantings, so even though it is near the road, it is very private and quiet. We fell in love with the Puna district, and this house was close to everything we wanted to see this trip. The info included by the owner gave us great ideas for things to do and how to get to them. We loved it!
My husband and I stayed at Hibiscus Cottage for 5 nights. We arrived there in the night. It was so dark and all you could hear was flogs? birds?.Actually I was little bit scared , but next morning when I saw the whole yard and landscaping, it was so beautiful and relaxing. The fresh air from trees in the morning was healing us and made our day start very refresh.
We appreciate some avocados in the yard which was so nature taste and fresh. The rest of fruits were not ready yet but We enjoyed looking at them and taking pictures.
The kitchen tools are high-end quality stuff which I really appreciate and enjoyed cooking there.
We had very valuable time there.
Thank you very much,
When we arrived at the Hibiscus Cottage we where overwhelmed. Not only is this place large and situated in beautiful environs, it is also decorated in a very tatsteful way and has lots of modern and clean facilities. We loved to have breakfast on the front porch and to cook our own dinner. The bed (actually there are two bedrooms) is very comfortable. The are is absolutely quite. Emily, the owner, is a very generous person. She compensated us with a fruit basket because there was a technical problem with the hot water supply on the first day. More than one could ask for!
They say that Puna is the area where there is most "Mana" (i.e. spiritual energy) on Hawaii. There might be something to it. At least we enjoyed our three days between tide pools, hippie farmers markets and - of course - the vulcano a lot and returned in the best of spirits. We loved our whole travel expierence on Hawaii, but after some so-so experiences with regard to accommodation, we were fully satisfied here. And more: really sad to leave...
