Villa La Sirena or the Mermaids cottage has been converted from an old fisherman's dwelling. It doesn't have a flush wall or square corner anywhere, but has been lovingly rebuilt and remodeled to be the dream vacation spot for one or two couples or any other small group that that would find the cottage comfortable .There are two queen bedrooms, no cots or pullouts are available. This very romantic villa is perfect for a honeymoon or an anniversary. The cottage is not suitable for small children.
We have lots of towels and all the nice soft high thread count sheets are 100% cotton.Enjoy long hot showers as we have an on demand hot water heater for an endless supply. The mattresses are high quality. We have an assortment of pillows for every taste even a couple of down pillows if that is your preference. Both bedrooms have AC for warmer nights.
The cottage has a definite nautical theme and been finished with an eclectic mix of antiques, comfortable stylish furniture, and beautiful things collected from around the world. There is an extensive collection of whimsical art work, much of it done by the owner.
Overlooking the busy working harbor, the activity starts early and you can have your morning coffee or evening glass of wine on the ample deck and enjoy an ever changing panorama. Stay entertained Watching Tarpon hunt and the rays coming in close to shore, dolphins, turtles and large schools of fish are seen regularly. Pelicans and several varieties of seabirds provide constant amusment. House binoculars and a bird book are available. Watch as fisherman and ferries come and go, charter sailboats take on guests just below you and then watch perfect sunsets over Puerto Rico in the distance. Later on in the evening, you can spot your favorite constellations among the thousands of stars visible on a dark night.
When you can drag yourself away from the view you will find a gourmet kitchen with everything you could want (and if not just ask, as the owners live on island ). There is a 4 burner European gas cook top, a micro convection oven, sturdy Kitchen Aid cookware, and a full size dishwasher lots of counter space, good knives and a gas grill. We are just above the fisherman's dock, you can walk down when you see them come in and buy some fresh fish or better yet some local lobster. We have several pots big enough to steam or boil a lobster or two. If you miss the boats, one of the fishermen lives a few houses away and you can go see what he has available or put in a special order. Of course there is a blender for frozen drinks and a coffee maker, toaster oven and some cool cook books to inspire . You will love cooking at home and eating on the deck BUT if you prefer, get takeout because there is not a restaurant on the island that has a view like this one.
If cooking is not part of your vacation program, don't worry you can walk to half a dozen restaurants and get delicious drinks at the local bars, some just a few steps from the villa. Yummy nearby takeout is available, Sushi, Pizza, great seafood stew , smoothies or Puerto Rican Specialties are all available within a few step or a hundred or so yards of the villa.
It is recommended guests rent a car for visiting the famous Vieques beaches, however you can walk to several grocery stores, Buen Provecho, the gourmet store has imported cheeses, and better quality meats and other treats ,The emporium has a great selection of spices and ingredients for more international tastes, two bakeries, the bank, the health food store, the post office and several gift shops are nearby.
Runners and walkers will find pleasant routes to the East on the un congested roads along the ocean in the quiet neighborhoods of Bravos de Boston and Santa Maria.
Sometimes you will see locals swimming in the harbor right in front of the house, and just beyond the ferry dock you will see some pretty sandy spots that are suitable for taking a quick dip. HOWEVER Vieques ' truly gorgeous beaches are located inside the Fish and wildlife reserve which is about a ten minute drive to the gate. There are many other beaches worth visiting, Green beach on the western shore, the three beaches inside the Sunbay state park , Black Sand beach and Playa Grande out beyond La Hueca. All of these beaches are just a short drive, and we recommend you rent a vehicle from one of the 10 or so licensed car rental agencies on Vieques. We do not offer a car with this property. Some guests chose to not rent and we can recommend several reliable local drivers who will be happy to chauffeur you to some distant beaches and further out restaurants . Publicos ,16 passenger vans that are a cross between a bus and a Taxi are available at the nearby ferry dock and meet all the incoming boats. They charge about $5 per person for a shared trip across the island.
If you enjoy walking ,you can walk from the cottage along the water to Sea Glass beach and beyond to some pretty beaches along the north shore.
Beach towels, coolers and good quality beach chairs and an umbrella are provided when you want to visit our beautiful beaches. We even have a couple of Boogie boards if you want to try the surf at Navio or at certain times of the year, just around the corner in Bravos de Boston.
we are connected, there is reliable Wifi at the house and we enjoy a good signal for most cellular phone providers.
You can sleep well knowing the house is very secure with roll down hurricane shutters and modern security window and doors throughout. There is off street parking behind a convenient beeper operated rolling door. Mosquitos do not thrive near salt water and have never been a problem at this property, but just in case, the windows and doors have screens.
The Sailor and the Mermaid met many years ago on a lovely tropical island. They traveled the world building beautiful houses , painting and collecting wonderful things. The Mermaids cottage is a dream realized. We have lived in Vieques for more than 20 years and can help make your vacation perfect

Helen Davis purchased this cottage in 2011
We fist tried to purchase this property about 15 years ago for our own residence but it didn't happen, When it became available in 2012 , we jumped on it and used our combined talents, he a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker and she an artist to create the perfect vacation cottage. It took eighteen months to complete and is being offered for the first time at New Years 2014.
When we travel, we love to stay in places that offer us the option of walking to shops and dinner. We always opt for smaller intimate places and look for the word CHARM in the discription. We love to find places that feel like a family home filled with interesting collectables and art work. We want to feel the love.
In Villa La Sirena we have strived to create exactly what we would love to find when we vacation.
We truly LOVED our stay at this little cottage in Vieques. The pictures don't even do justice to the craftsmanship and attention to detail that is throughout this sweet little home. The location is on the North side of the island, and there is a lot going on there, all perfectly within walking distance. It has everything you need, is very safe, and has great views and a nice deck overlooking the water. There is definitely some morning noise due to the ferry terminal there, but we did not find it bothersome, as we like getting up on the earlier side. Some days we slept right through it.
There is great art and a safe place to park your vehicle (scooters in our case, which I recommend, BTW)..
Helen is a fabulous host! She will be there at the drop of a hat if you need any little thing, but she does not hover in the slightest. Very sweet and ultra-accommodating. Definitely recommend this spot!! :)
We rented La Sirena for a 4 day getaway and couldn't have been happier with the property - - its location, furnishings, and wonderful outdoor space. Mornings drinking coffee on the deck overlooking the harbor were the perfect start of each day. Absolutely nothing was lacking and all that my sister and friend could say was "when are we coming back?"
Loved staying at this sweet house in Isabel II. The house is beautifully furnished with a complete and modern kitchen. It was immaculate and supplied with high quality bed linens and luxurious towels. There's a spacious deck for outdoor dining with spectacular sunset views. Easy walk into town for food shopping, restaurants, and of course Mar Azul. I rented a car and there's a locked parking space at the house. A car isn't necessary, you can walk to some beaches or grab a van from the ferry dock. I enjoyed being in town as I live in a very rural area so this was a treat. There are some sounds associated with being in a populated area so don't expect absolute silence. Being able to experience the local food and music culture in Isabel within walking distance was perfect for me. I'll definitely be back!
Amazing villa near the Ferry. Lots of activity; beautiful sunsets; fabulous accommodations. The owners provided everything you need to have a wonderful stay. Immaculate and amazingly tasteful. Can't wait to go back!!!!
My husband and I recently stayed in the Mermaid's cottage, and it is just as beautiful, or more, than the pictures show. The cottage was clean and fully stocked with linens, kitchenware, beach equipment, deck chairs, you name it. We had everything we needed and Helen was very friendly and helpful--she picked us up from the airport and pointed out restaurants and grocery stores on our way through town. She even brought us a bottle of wine to enjoy! The fisherman working on the docks below took us a day or two to get used to, they start early! But we soon figured out that we could close our windows once they got going, turn on the fan in the bedroom, and sleep peacefully for the rest of the morning. The fans/AC were a really good way to drown out any sound from the downtown/dock area--there was one or two nights that things were a little loud (mainly music), but it certainly didn't spoil our experience in the cottage. The views and the deck from which to enjoy them are just beautiful. We could walk all around Isabel from this location, which was also great. Mamasonga's, El Yate, and Mar Azul's are all less than a 5 minutes on foot and each hold their own charm, we visited them multiple times during our stay! Helen is very accessible if you need anything but very respectful of your privacy--we really enjoyed her and her beautiful cottage!!
I was trying to figure out what is the one best thing to point out about this rental, but found it wouldn't be fair and it definitely isn't easy. There are so many positives about this place that no single thing should take precedence.
This rental was perfect. I am a long time Vieques homeonwer except at the moment. My brother and sister in law and I had a trip planned but needed to rent a place instead of staying at my house. We were lucky to have been able to rent La Sirena.
First off, it is so close to so many things. The ferry is a few steps away. There are three places to eat even closer to that. Al's is close by, plus another few restaurants within a short walk after that. And saying all these things are in walking distance is not a stretch, as it is with so many other rentals that say that.
La Sirena has it's own parking spot, which is a huge plus. The whole place is brand newly renovated. It is like a brand new home. So tasteful and comfortable. The beds were comfy and looking out the doors from the beds is beautiful. The view in general is stellar. We never felt crowded or cramped. Never felt unsafe or worried. The kitchen was great and very usable with all new appliances and supplies. The water pressure was awesome and the hot water came on instantly.
I do not have a single complaint about this place. I loved it.
You should rent here, you will not regret it.
I had the pleasure of staying at La Serena for 4 weeks starting on Jan 8th, 2014. The house is very well equipped with lots of sheets, towels and the most well equipped kitchen that I have ever seen in a vacation rental. The owners are minutes away and were eager to resolve whatever minor issues arose. The activity at the ferry dock and fishing pier add a local dimension not available elsewhere in Vieques. A unique and fulfilling experience!
Watch the fisherman arrive with their fresh catch and walk down and to first choice of lobster and fish.walk to town for groceries and fresh bread in the mornings, several restaurants and bars just steps from the front door.
