Little Compton is a very small, rural and bucolic town located on the southeast of the Sakonnet River. The Town Commons has the Commons Restaurant, Wilbur’s General Store, A1 Pizza, the Brownell Library, and an ATM, churches, Living Water Surf Shop and Corner Cones Ice Cream (Summer only). All of these places are about 3 miles from the house- a 10 minute bike ride or 45 minute walk. The town center has the Library, the public tennis courts, Community Center kids camps, local churches and playground adjacent to the K-8 school. Also Crowther’s restaurant is about 1 mile east of the town center. The area is spotted with many farm stands including Young’s Family Farm and Walkers, both on upper Main Road about 4 miles from the house. Wishingstone Farm, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm with farm stand is across from the entrance to our neighborhood. It is a 6/10 mile walk from the house. The farm-stand is open on Tuesday and Saturday weekly in the summer. Non-members are welcome and it is cash or check only. Sakonnet Vineyards is past the farm stands on upper West Main Road about 4.5 miles from the house. The Vineyard does wine tastings, and holds Thursday evening concerts in the summer. There is also a small restaurant at the vineyard.
The area is also very popular for bike riding; the roads are less traveled and very scenic. The homer owner can provide advice on riding loops of short (7-15 miles) medium (25-38 miles) and long (50-75 miles) that are both scenic and challenging.
There are also many choices for hikers including:
The Dundery Brook trail runs through a forested wetland and then into an open meadow and pond habitat near the Commons in Little Compton.
In neighboring Tiverton, RI there are two miles of trails in Emily Ruecker Wildlife Refuge; a 50-acre parcel of woods and salt marsh with trails and fine views of the Sakonnet River is home to breeding Ospreys.
Very close to the Refuge are three interconnected trails at the 230 acre Pardon Gray Preserve and connects with the Weetamoo Woods Preserve.
