Our beautiful home is set in the heart of the Chianti Classico region with its famous rolling hills dotted with vineyards, olive groves, and castles. Our tastefully furnished apartment features traditional Tuscan style architecture with chestnut beams and terracotta floors and a blend of ample outdoor space and comfortable, well laid-out indoor space. The main bedroom has a queen-size bed, two night tables, and a large armadio (wardrobe). The guest room on the same floor has a full-size sofa bed, satellite TV, and DVD. Both rooms have French doors that access a private garden area with a table seating 6, a traditional terracotta barbecue, and several beautiful plants. The bathroom on the same floor features a large shower. In the entryway a spiral staircase leads to the living space. The great room includes a fully equipped kitchen, a dining table seating 4 and a cozy seating area with a leather love seat and two comfortable leather chairs. Windows on the kitchen side give views of the vibrant gardens above while the living room side features views of the village of Gaiole and the vineyard-covered hills beyond. Two French doors lead to our beautiful, flower-bedecked terrace which features a tall table with 4 stools and a seating arrangement for 4, both of them perfect for morning coffee or evening wine. The front half of the terrace is covered, so it is a great place to sit even in a rainstorm. The views from the terrace include Gaiole, the vineyards of Riecine and Cappannelle, the tiny village of Barbischio, and the ruined medieval castle of Montegrossi. The apartment features free internet and the complex offers shared amenities including a beautiful, spacious pool with gorgeous views of the surrounding area, laundry facilities, and a fitness center. The apartment has dedicated covered parking.
Gaiole in Chianti was an original capital of the Chianti League and has been an important market town since the 1300s. It has over 30 renowned wineries in its vicinity and boasts the largest concentration of medieval castles in the region, including Castello Spaltenna just a short walk through the vineyards from our apartment. Gaiole was named as the best small town in Europe by Forbes magazine in 2008. The village, which is just a few minute stroll away, is anchored by the stylish Piazza Ricasoli, where you can find friendly people and everything you could need—coffee bars, wine bars, enotecas, a butcher, delis, trattorias, bakery, pharmacist, clothing stores, fruit and vegetable market, ceramic shop, and a supermarket. Artwork is an integral part of the piazza, with the giant “Gallo Nero” (the black rooster, the symbol of Chianti) dominating the entrance to the piazza. Gaiole is the center of all the activities you think of when you imagine Tuscany—wine tasting, dining, hiking, and cycling (we are the home of the world-renowned cycling event, L’Eroica). It is conveniently located just 20 minutes from Siena and 50 minutes from Florence. An incredible array of phenomenal restaurants and beautiful Tuscan villages are within 30 minutes from Gaiole.
We are retired Americans from southeastern Idaho. We were in the wine business and started traveling to Italy in the late 1990s and fell in love with the Chianti region of Italy.
We love our home because of the spectacular views and we like to live within walking distance to a town. Gaiole is perfect because we can stroll through the vineyards for a glass of wine or walk into town for dinner. We also love that we are close to so many great restaurants, wineries and small hill towns AND at the same time we don't feel like we are living in a town were bus loads of tourists are being dropped off.
Our home is newer but it is built in the traditional Tuscan style with large Chestnut beams and terracotta floors. So many of the places we rented were fine but they just had basic kitchens and lacked character. We have filled our home with Italian pottery and beautiful art and we love how comfortable it feels.
My wife, daughter (aged 9) and I has just finished a one month stay here at Jeannie and Gerry's borgo in Gaiole. The borgo itself is absolutely gorgeous and exceeded our expectations. Jeannie thought of everything-including very useful information about Gaiole and sights to visit nearby. The view from the terrace is breath-taking (overlooking Gaiole and surrounding hills, vineyards).
The borgo itself nestles into the hillside and is built respecting Tuscan architecture. Parking is located underground (we had a rental car for our entire stay-a car is a must). The borgo shares a pool, laundry facilities, and a small fitness room. The residents we met staying at the borgo were English/ Dutch / German / Irish-mostly families/ couples. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. The borgo is quiet and safe - exactly what we were looking for. Jeannie arranged for the cleaning lady, Barbara to greet us initially and show us around. Barbara was most friendly and helpful. Stefano, the caretaker of the borgo who keeps the pool and communal flowers was also extremely friendly and helpful.
Gaiole is a lovely Tuscan village with friendly people and most amenities ( small coop grocery store, small delis, pharmacy, banking machines, post office, restaurants, wine stores and a tourist info). We did our larger grocery purchases in nearby Montevarchi / Siena when needed ( although we preferred to purchase locally).
We found Gaiole the perfect location to day trip to Florence, Siena, Cortona, San Gminano, Volterra -to name a few. If you are an avid cyclist, Gaiole is the place for you!!!
Thank you Jeannie and Gerry for allowing us to rent your beautiful property!!! We will highly recommend your borgo to family and friends.
What fabulous part of the world!! We loved this townhome and it's fantastic deck where we had a lovely dinner, wine and Limoncello every evening. Great wineries everywhere -- fantastic local pesto, pasta, local meats/sausage and fresh vegetables at in the local piazza.
We explored the entire region - many of the little towns on the very small roads and a surprise on almost every turn. The town was close and very convenient. Check with the Information office in town - she was great!!
We bought ceramic dishes from Tania at Cooler di Chianti in Gaiole - - best prices around (we shopped her) and she will ship direct.
We want to come back next fall and do the L' Eroica bike ride - - can't wait!
We are still talking about our wonderful week in Gaiole last fall (2013). What set this vacation apart from previous visits to the Tuscany region was our stay in this beautiful townhome. The property was designed to have an old world charm, while providing all the modern amenities one has come to expect. The home is immaculate, has a well equipped kitchen, lovely furnishings, and very comfortable beds. The terrace was one of our favorite spots to enjoy coffee in the morning and a glass of wine in the evening. The views were spectacular.
The town square is within easy walking distance. The people we met in restaurants and shops were delightful and very accommodating to visitors. Most locals spoke English, which was very helpful to us.
Our week was spent enjoying all the region has to offer. The townhome's central location is perfect as a base. After a long day of sightseeing, it was nice to have a beautiful pool for a relaxing swim.
I would highly recommmend this property. We were sorry when our week was over. We definitly preferred the townhome in Gaioli to staying in a hotel. I would also recommend having a car.
One of our favorite restaurants was Le Contrade. Excellent food, great ambiance.
We stayed at this beautiful property in September of 2013. It is a lovely home with all the amenities one could ask for. We flew into Florence and it was only about a 30 minute drive to Gaioli. We toured nearby wineries and ate at some amazing restaurants during our stay. We loved walking to the town square and socializing with the locals. Sienna is only half an hour away and we spent a day there during our stay. I remember sitting in the kitchen one day looking out the living room window and thinking that it looked just like a painting - the beautiful hills and vineyards. This is a spectacular property!
