Tahoe Donner Lodge Rental Photos and Description
6 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, Sleeps 16
Completed in 2006, Swede Dreams is a custom designed luxury log home with rustic, Scandinavian charm and all the modern amenities needed for the perfect Tahoe vacation during any season. This beautiful 6 bedroom, 4 bath home, located in the exclusive Tahoe Donner association of North Lake Tahoe, rests on 1/2 acre of flat, wooded space and is perfect for families with children, large gatherings or family reunions. Swede Dreams provides immediate access to the scenic Nature Loop trail and backs up to a preserved wetland area that houses a family of active beavers and countless bird species. A private natural spring on the property bubbles up into a small pool before babbling into beautiful Trout Creek.
We bought Swede Dreams in November 2013 and have gone about a meaningful update of the property since then. All kitchen appliances were upgraded, new kitchen counters were installed, and all new furniture (including beds and bedding) was purchased. We also put a large hot tub on the back deck overlooking the preserved wetlands. For those who need to be in touch even during vacation time, we installed high speed WiFi (50Mbps) and a roof-based cell phone booster which now provides solid reception. We have DirecTV connected to four flat screen TVs (three bedrooms plus the Great Room) and have a full collection of DVDs on site in addition to the option of Netflix.
The house was designed with both entertaining and children in mind. The 4,000 square feet of living space is spread over the main floor and an upper floor whose separate sleeping areas are connected by a dramatic elevated catwalk overlooking the Great Room. Five bedrooms and three full baths are located on the upper level and create three distinct living spaces. The south end of the upper level holds a master bedroom with its own fireplace and another room immediately adjacent. On the north end, there is a second master with a neighboring bunked bedroom, both of which open into a common bonus room alcove designed to hold and entertain kids in a separate living space during early mornings or after hours when adults might gather downstairs. The upper level also has a bedroom on the west end with its own deck and bathroom, 50' flat screen TV and a delightful reading loft outside its door. On the main level is a final bedroom with its own bathroom—great for those who may have trouble getting up or down stairs. Older guests will appreciate that the front entrance, garage and entire main floor can be accessed with no more than one step up or down.
Since a good night's sleep after a long day on the slopes or hiking trails can separate a great vacation from a painful memory, we take sleeping quite seriously. Swede Dreams very comfortably sleeps 16 people in beds. Because we have never met someone who enjoyed sleeping on a pull-out sofa, all our beds are ‘real’. Our Master Bedrooms are outfitted with the same King sized beds used at the Ritz Hotel in SF (we called and asked them because we loved their beds), and all our queen beds are of similar quality. All beds have been outfitted with luxury linens and duvets.
With 9 separate zones of in-floor, radiant heat throughout the house, our guests should be able to find and maintain the perfect temperature without the noise, dryness and constant disruption that come from forced air heating. Our driveway is also heated hydronically, so nobody will need to worry about slipping when arriving at night or leaving for the slopes early morning. Perhaps more importantly, after a big dump, nobody will need to shovel his or her way out before heading up!
For the cautious traveler, Swede Dreams is equipped with a centrally monitored alarm system whose access code can be set remotely by the owner and customized for a given visitor.

We both grew up skiing and hiking with our families and bought a place in Tahoe which we hope will let us pass along to our own kids the appreciation and love for outdoors that our parents shared with us. Karin grew up in San Diego and would visit their family's ski house in Incline Village regularly growing up. Darius grew up in Telluride, CO and was a competitive freestyle skier until graduating from high school. We met during our years at Stanford and are now happy to live in the Bay Area (Noe Valley) along with our two daughters.
Karin's parents were both born and raised in Sweden and we still make regular visits to the Leksand region. Many of the items adorning Swede Dreams are original Swedish works that have been in the family for years.
We both had our first visits to Tahoe in the mid-1980's and since then have had the chance to stay at homes in many different towns and communities around the Tahoe region. We shared ski leases with friends in Squaw, Dollar Point, Northstar, Tahoe City...and finally in Tahoe Donner ('TD'). Once we discovered TD, we never considered renting a house anywhere else.
Over the course of many years and various ski leases in different parts of TD, we came to appreciate the value of being in 'lower' TD with its lighter winds and snow loads (meaning the snowbanks usually maxed out at 10 feet instead of 20 feet during mid-winter). We also liked being closer to the entrance/exit on Northwoods and wanted to find a relatively flat lot on a quiet street...ideally close to a trail and preserved open space and not far from the Trout Creek Rec Center. Truly too much to ask, we thought...until we found our dream home.
We had searched patiently for perhaps a year when we came across Swede Dreams. Once we saw it in August 2013, we knew it represented everything we were looking for in our Tahoe dream home and decided to take the leap. It's been an incredible journey outfitting and caring for a large, custom-built log home...but we already consider it part of the family and something our kids (and friends, guests and family) will cherish for decades to come. We love the idea of sharing this amazing place with others who appreciate the outdoors and want to create special memories with their own kids or families.
When we found Swede Dreams, we thought it was the perfect house in the perfect location. When we first walked inside, we were struck by the scale of the construction and thoughtfulness of its layout. The house seems large enough to gracefully accommodate many people without feeling so large that anyone can get lost or secluded in far-off rooms. And with different rooms set away from each other, it's easy to have Frozen playing in one room while parents enjoy a quiet fireside conversation in another, or sit in the back deck hot tub while being able to keep an eye on kids inside.
We also love the ease with which we can head with our kids down the stairs from our back porch and immediately be in the thick of nature...both in our back yard (with its natural spring) and on the Nature Loop Trail which winds down to a beaver pond about 100 yards to the south.
We were lucky enough to find and purchase Swede Dreams in 2013 and hope to share this amazing property with many others in the years to come!
