|Minimum Stay||1 - 2 nights|
Beautiful, colorful, surfer's getaway house. Comfortable - with several areas for sitting and hanging out - each bedroom has air conditioning and comfortable beds. The house has wifi and cable TV. Great view of the beach and river- spectacular Pacific Sunsets most of the year. Property has dozens of coconut palms; walk out the back to the riverbank and the beach - a few feet to the right to a great sandy beach (Sunzal) or to the left to the best surf in El Salvador. Walk to Kayu for surfing lessons, or a little further East to El Tunco. The house has a well stocked kitchen, linens and towels. Outdoor barbecue and shower next to the pool, a basketball court and extra parking inside the property! This house is FUN and beautiful.
The house is a 7 minute drive to the Port of La Libertad, where there are two modern Super Selectos grocery stores, and an awesome pier with freshly caught fish and seafood daily. Stroll down the Malecon or sit at one of the several good outdoor restaurant with a cold beer.
Extra services: There is a daily cleaning service available at the house, as well as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and laundry.
You can also order delicious Salvadorean food daily from Mati at the Restaurante El Sunzalito on the main road and she will have it delivered- for around. The ladies at the little tortilla stand at the turnoff of the road make fantastic pupusas for additional fee per dozen and fresh tortillas are 6 for a quarter.
I am Salvadorean-American and live in San Francisco, CA. Like many Salvadoreans, my family is spread all around the world, and this house is the spot where we all come back to -to see each other and our beautiful home country.
Myrna Melgar purchased this house in 2013
Because it's awesome! The location is fantastic and everyone has fun - young, old - the Salvadoreans, the Americans, the Europeans in the family - the elders, the teenagers and the babies
There is nothing like swinging in the hammock by the pool under the coconut trees with a cold Pilsner beer in your hand!
The house is great -- clean, spacious, comfortable and well appointed, and very safe and secure. We found, as others have, the owner (Myrna) to be enormously helpful in arranging our trip, and the custodian's family (Don Romeo, Martha, Chepe et al.) to be attentive and willing to tend to virtually any request, on very short notice, from rides, to meals, to various requests around the house. The pool and outdoor shower are great after a surf session, and there's plenty of space.
The location couldn't be much better. The house is a very short walk to Sunzal (you can see the waves from behind the house). The main break at Sunzal had had consistent waves that were perfect for a longboard all week -- there are beach breaks a little further down the beach, too, which were a bit punchier. And it's very easy to get to the other, more remote spots -- Punta Roca, El Zonte, and so on all the way to Mizata. Chepe and his nephew were willing to ferry us and our boards to them every morning (even before dawn) for a very modest fee (there's also a bus that's easy, and allows riders to carry boards with them).
But (unlike many of those spots) there are all sorts of amenities nearby, in terms of groceries, cafes, excellent pupusas, etc., and strong wifi and suchlike. The house is a very short walk to El Tunco, with its various restaurants and bars and so forth, but far enough away that it's not affected by the Saturday night craziness in town. We found it a perfect balance between access to the surf, and proximity to town and necessities.
Our stay was terrific -- I'd recommend the house very highly, especially to those looking to get into the water.
This house is in a private compound so it offers all the seclusion you would want, but is also right on the beach and a short walk from the surfing and restaurants and bars in Sunzal and EL Tunco. The kitchen is well stocked and the house has tons of room for people to spread out and have a good time. The yard and pool are spectacular as well. We had a great time and would definitely come back.
We are so glad we chose this location for our holiday. Right from the inquiries many months ago the owner Myrna was prompt and helpful. She even bought some supplies for us due to our late arrival. She made arrangements for transportation and checked that all was well after our arrival. The house is exactly as you see in the photos. Spacious, comfortable, well equipped inside and out. Air-conditioning worked well, as did appliances and hot water (select heat right on shower head). The yard, pool, hammocks, and patio furniture in a private setting are a plus when you have had enough of the beautiful beach and surf. I can't say enough about the wonderful people Myrna employs to help at the house. The caretaker Romeo, his son José, and José's wife Martha will make your stay even more special. Coconuts, transportation, house issues, water, wonderful meals for little money, and so much more... They really want to make sure you are enjoying your stay. A little Spanish would be helpful. I highly recommend Martha's fresh grilled fish with rice and cooked veggies and tortillas for $5/person. She might even throw in homemade tamales! José's friend Oscar can provide reasonably priced day tours in a good vehicle. The people in El Salvador are friendly and helpful and not pushy. We felt safe at all times. Nearby El Tunco is fun to walk around in but the pupusa place nearby at the end of the entrance you drive down to get to the house is the best and so cheap! For quick access to the beach turn right as you leave the main gate of the house, ,follow the dirt road to a gate, head left a little further on rocks to a path right to a beautiful black sand beach. From the wall gate near the pool you can have quick access to a small beach on the other side of the river. Spectacular sunsets await you there. Myrna, I am so glad I called you because your house was the perfect location for us and our two friends. We loved it!
We are not finished yet with our vacation, but it has been almost perfect!
Myrna the owner set everything up perfectly including a last minute change for airport pickup. The fridge was stocked as per our request with essential items.
The highlights so far are
A great backyard with a sparkling pool, hammocks ,and the ocean waves in the background.
The great cooked meals by the staff . Martha's fish dinner was fabulous for $5.- per person. She also prepared a tasty chicken dinner but the chicken was rather tuff ,go for the fish.
The papusa stand just up the road is wonderful. We had them 3 times already. The cost was no more then $ 0.50 each. 3 is a good amount to get per person.
The beach is great.
The helpful friendly staff assisting us in day tripping.
We hired Oscar ( a friend of Chepe /Jose) on two days for a private tour in his SUV.
The coconuts are very tasty! We have gone through 22 already in less then a week!$0.50 each.
The AC in our rooms works fantastic.
The wifi works great.
A few tips
Get some groceries in la libertad from the airport. They have a great and reasonable priced selection of rum, vodka and other drinks.
There are two beaches close to the house. We only went to Kayu beach.it is easy to get there. Exit the front door take the path to the right and follow it for about 200 yards go through the gate and turn left. That way you have to walk only a little bit (20-30yards) on the rocks. The beach is about a 4 minute stroll away.
The other beach is closer ,to the right when you exit the backyard gate but you have to navigate more rocks and cross the small stream.
There is a gas stove but we cooked with a brand new electric skillet.
You can get fruit, eggs, soda and beer from the store just a few minutes walk from the house. The beer is cheaper here then in la libertad.
Spanish will be very helpful to know as the staff speaks NO English. But you can make yourself understood within just a few phrases.
The house is nice but not a villa and has a few things that are not to USA standards but for us the really only negative was the funky odor smell coming from the kitchen sink. We poured some chlorine down the drain and it went away for a while.
Trip started off with great communication with the owner. Upon arrival the location was easy to find and the gate keeper/care taker was welcoming and immediately accommodating. The house itself was perfect for us. The AC units in each bedroom work very well and therefor I slept like a baby every night. The swimming pool was perfect, morning or afternoon. The only issue we had was running out of water in the middle of a shower, twice. But after a few minutes the water would come back on and all returned to normal. The tv turned itself off after 15 minutes but was not a big deal since we were not there to watch tv. Great places to eat close to the residence and very inexpensive. Great places nearby to learn how to surf although we did have to search a little for a rockless part of the beach for the kids to play. Overall great place to stay. Thanks to all involved in making this an enjoyable stay.
Had the best time staying here! We were here for two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed the location because it was very close to Sunzal- within walking distance actually, so we surfed it several times a day. The beautiful pool that called us each morning with our coffee to enjoy it's warm water and peaceful surroundings. And the charming decor within, that made us feel comfortable and at home.
It was exactly as it was described. The staff was helpful and attentive, always bringing fresh water and keeping the house clean and delicious meals cooked for us when we wanted them. Transportation to the store for groceries was available, which made NOT renting a car, the perfect choice for us.
We can't wait to come back and stay here again... and did we mention? The surf at Sunzal is AMAZING... and you're RIGHT THERE to enjoy it! Incredible home... and I couldn't recommend it more! We're coming back for SURE!
Fantastic surfing location! Casa Sunzal is in a small development tucked away from the main road. The back yard abuts the river and the beach - to surf one of the 10 best surfing spots in the world! Less than 1/2 mile to El Tunco nightlife, the port of La Libertad, and 10 minutes to Walter Thilo Deinninger Nature preserve for hiking, spelunking and ziplining. The house is a 40 minute drive from the Comalapa Airport and about 45 minutes from San Salvador. Great access to all of the Western El Salvador beaches, Parque Nacional El Imposible, Archaelogical sites in Western El Salvador - Tazumal, San Andres, Joya de Ceren. 1.5 hours to Lago Coatepeque and Volcan de Santa Ana.
