NEWLY RENOVATED IN 2014!!! We just finished insulating the walls, adding insulation under the new laminate floor, adding electric wall heaters to the bedrooms and bathroom, and a newly tiled shower and bathroom floor. Come and see how we have made GREAT even BETTER!

Our washroom is FRESHLY UPDATED with a new custom tiled water efficient shower and floor. In addition, other amenities such as NEW water efficient toilet. We provide quality bright white towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a hairdryer.

BEACH ACCESS is available off the front deck and down the moss-covered granite path to the waters edge. With the Eastman Waterfront Cottage being perched just above the beach you can easily dive in off the granite beach for a refreshing swim or toss out a fishing line.…..You never know what you might catch. In addition, the Mt. Gardner Beach is just a 5-minute walk from the house.

You will be impressed with the panoramic southwesterly to northwesterly views taking in Howe sound, the Paisley Islands, the Coastal Mountains and Mt. Garibaldi. The sea life is bountiful and ever changing……..Sit back, bird watch, meditate, and if you are lucky, you might be one of the few to see a migrating whale……..Keep your camera close by.

The cottage kitchen is equipped with the ORIGINAL 1950’S electric stove with wood burning capabilities. We do supply wood for your evening fire October – April to burn in the kitchen stove for additional cabin heat. How charming is that? The kitchen is set up with a coffee maker, toaster oven, pots, pans, dishes, glassware, and flatware. Sorry, no microwave...and YOU are the dishwasher.

Our alkaline well water is fresh and delicious. Drink up and enjoy the health benefits of our fresh tap water...It is good for you!!

NEW UPDATE: We have just replaced the old and added NEW EFFICIENT ELECTRIC BASEBOARD HEATERS to the bedrooms and living areas. We know they will be more efficient, safe, and provide cozy heat to all corners of the house.

UPDATE: Our recent renovation includes NEW LAMINATE FLOORING with three layers of insulation under the flooring. Not only does it give the cottage a “real” floor that is aesthetically attractive we know it will make the floor warm and cozy under your feet as well. Reports are the floor is comfortable and warm enough to go barefoot.

Arrive down a tree-lined driveway only to find the cottage nestled among the trees. Treasure the seclusion and privacy of this WATERFRONT CEDAR CABIN at Eastman Point on Bowen Island...It is so special.

Enjoy the original Eastman family history throughout the cottage. Notice the hand painted furniture by Antonia Laribbe Eastman, a prolific artist in the early 1900's. The artwork is also Antonia’s…she expressed herself in many different mediums.

We bet you will love the trip down memory lane in this charming and authentic property. Your summer visit may include relaxing on the seaside deck while watching the sea life, birds, boats, clouds and soaking in the sun. A winter stay may deliver a wonderful storm-watching event. The Eastman Waterfront Cottage is the perfect location to get away from it all and either season will bring you back to the relaxation that you are most likely craving.

About Jan Stevens

I live in New York City and work at the United Nations where I am responsible for environmental programs for developing countries related to biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, forest protection and sustainable energy.

The oceanfront cottage on Bowen Island listed here was passed down to me from my grandparents who bought the property in 1918 and my wife, Joan, and I bought the property next door on the water and built the first 'Platinum' green house on the island in 2009. So we have both a modern house and a vintage cottage to make available here.

Since my work and travels prevent me from spending as much time on Bowen as I would like, I am listing them on (website hidden) to make them available to others.

Jan Stevens is the manager for both these properties while I am away from Bowen and I will pass on requests for rentals to Jan.

Jan Stevens purchased this cabin in 1918

Why Jan Stevens chose Bowen Island

My grandfather, Samuel Mack Eastman, discovered this spot on Bowen Island in 1918 when he came to recuperate from an injury sustained in World War I while serving in Canada’s army. He liked it so much that he bought this acre of oceanfront property for $300 that year! Mack and his wife Antonia built a cabin here and my mother, Isabelle, spent her early summers here from the 1920s on, and all of the summers of her later years. This was my mother’s favorite spot on earth. The ‘new’ cabin was built around 1950 and it continues to serve us well.

I have been coming to this place on Bowen since the age of two, and this is where I found my appreciation of nature, ocean swimming and interest in international affairs and environmental issues. I was also inspired to build my career at the United Nations to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather who devoted himself to world peace in the League of Nations in the 1920s and 1930s.

Subsequently, my wife, Joan, fell in love with this spot as deeply as my mother did, so we bought the acre next door to my grandparents property and built the first “Platinum” certified ‘green’ house on Bowen, which was finished in 2009. It is our other listing, the Eastman Waterfront Retreat.

In a few years this property will have been in my family for 100 years so our connection to this place is strong. Incidentally, as early notables in Bowen history, Mack and Antonia Eastman are referenced in both books on the history of Bowen Island and even in the historical section of the 2012 Bowen phone book!

What makes this cabin unique

Our Historical Waterfront Cedar cottage is only 9 minutes from Snug Cove by car or a 45 minute walk. It is easily accessible with a 2WD vehicle. For guests that are looking for privacy this property is secluded, surrounded by trees and on the water's edge. A peaceful retreat to the past.......a wonderful place to reboot your soul.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed in the cottage to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The cottage was clean, dry and well maintained. The lovely smell of cedar scented the air. The double bed was very comfortable, we slept peacefully. Linens and towels were fresh. Living room furniture was comfortable. Kitchen was well equipped, we found everything we needed. Enjoyed the great ocean view with my breakfast from the kitchen table. Excellent deck and spectacular view. Sunsets are breathtaking with a glass of wine in hand. Cozy and inviting, we had a relaxing, romantic weekend. Owners family featured in history of Bowen Island, enjoyed reading material provided. Owner also provides printout with helpful information for cottage. We would highly recommend and look forward to our next visit.

Rustic and Dreamy

  • 5 of 5
The solitude of the Eastman Cottage was just what I needed. And the view was absolutely captivating. When I wasn't fully engrossed in reading, it was a treat to just curl up in one of the chairs on the deck while snuggled under a warm Hudson's Bay blanket, and watch the marine life, including listening to the prehistoric-sounding call of blue herons, and the hypnotic sound of the waves lapping at the shoreline.

The appearance of nearby Hutt Island reminded me of a big fat hamburger, rising out of the ocean. And the Langdale ferry, sailing by at night, all lit up, looked like a little city floating past. After sunset, the sky glittered with millions of stars and I was lucky enough to see one shooting star.

On the first evening, I was delighted to watch a baby harbour seal while it waited on the rocks for its mother, who had apparently gone fishing. It was the cutest thing; yawning and stretching and fanning its tail; big round, soulful eyes watching everything. And not only that, but it became even more interesting when a heron happened by and the two were checking each other out!

The bed was incredibly cozy; I haven't had a more restful sleep in ages. The aroma of the cedar walls was comforting, as was the rustic decor. This will not be my last stay at the Eastman Cottage. It was heavenly!

Such a perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed in the cottage for two nights with my sister and my brother-in-law. We couldn't choose a better time to have a peaceful and relaxing time in Bowen Island. The view from the balcony is even better than what you see in the photos. The place was clean and cozy with everything you need for a perfect retreat. One minor thing was that we would have loved to have a better access for swimming in the sea from the property, but the public beach was just around the corner and we took advantage of that. We also explored other public beaches in the island and spent lots of time in the water. We will definitely be back and might even try different seasons. Thank you for sharing this lovely cottage with us.

Everything we hoped for and more

  • 5 of 5
Our family of four recently stayed in the lovely Eastman cottage and we could not have been happier with our visit. The listing description and photos are accurate -- the cottage is very comfortable and the view is breathtaking. Our four-year-old raved that this is "his favourite cabin in the whole world" and the living room is "stupendous"! The bedrooms worked perfectly for us, our two young kids loved sleeping together in the room with twin beds. Parents of young children may wish to note that the bathroom contains a shower, no tub... but we put a rubbermaid tote in the shower area and filled it with some water to give our kids a bath there, which worked perfectly. As has been noted in other reviews, the location is wonderful, a short drive from Snug Cove but feels like you are very secluded. We really enjoyed the glimpse into the past via the old family photos on the bookshelf, it was really interesting to see pictures from the site so many decades ago. This is a truly special spot and we certainly hope to return.

Retreat back in time

  • 4 of 5
Website accurately portrays what you get. Cottage is rustic and comes with documentation of familly history. View is 10/10 with no neighbours in sight and lots of sea activity to watch. Cottage is sturdy and well equiped, good heating and cooling systems, ample hot water. The kitchen is very basic. I would recommend relying on food that you brought yourself or dining out. Exchange of information professional and timely. Owner seems very sympathetic. Enjoy!

Owner's Response: Scott, thank you so much for your helpful review. We always appreciate our guests feedback (raving or a constructive critiique) on our properties……this is how we improve and make your next stay even better.
We are pleased to know that you appreciated our recent upgrades: wall and floor insulation plus wall heaters in every room. Our goal was to provide a warm and cozy cottage no matter the season. We have had reports that “the kids are pattering around the cottage in their bare feet” which we know is a comfortable improvement.
The recently tiled bathroom and shower is fresh, new and bright and as you say, “has plenty of hot water.” We will get the photos posted this week of the new bathroom…….a VERY welcome improvement.
We are pleased to know that the cottage is as expected which means we have designed our listing accurately. We always want our guests to have realistic expectations: private and secluded cottage on the water with sea views north to south. It is great to know that our kitchen is represented accurately as well…..simple, small and 1950’s authentic. Trust that your kitchen feedback will be taken to heart and as time progresses we will definitely add improvements.
Thank you so much for being our guest and we hope to have you return.
Best to you,
Jan and Charles.

A Perfect Way to Bring in 2014

  • 5 of 5
My husband and our two dogs wanted to escape the city for New Years but not go too far. We were so pleased with our stay at Eastman Waterfront Cottage! It was a perfect place to bring in 2014. This cottage was quaint, clean, cozy, and very charming. We loved the old wood stove to cook on as well as the vintage fridge. This cottage was just perfect to unwind, detach and be one with nature. Simple. The view of the ocean was fantastic, as well as the surrounding forests that tucked you in every night. In the evening we could watch the stars on the deck with our dogs. They were very happy to romp around in the forest too. There's a lovely beach near by so we walked there so our girls could play in the water. I love how close this cottage is from the hustle and bustle of the city but you get transported back in time where it's totally peaceful. We look forward to returning soon Jan, you were so great with everything :)
