The cozy 1 bedroom apartment (ohana), situated below a family home, that is in a garden setting with two separate entrances. The kitchen, located in a corner of the living room has a full refrigerator, range/oven, and microwave. A table and chairs are on the lanai and there is a fold out dining table for inside dining. The screened doors and windows offer gentle breezes and allow the bird songs to wake you each morning. Kealakekua Bay is a 2 minute walk away and Manini Beach is a five minute walk and a wonderful place to spend an hour or a day in the beautiful small park with a sandy cove and friendly people, or to snorkel among the many tropical fish that abound in this underwater preserve. Sunsets at Manini Point are spectacular, and the benches provide a nice place to sit and enjoy the view. Spinner dolphins leap from the bay most mornings and Humpback Whales are commonly seen in the bay or out breaching out at sea during February through April. They give birth to their calves is the bay and you can hear the slap of their tails and their vocalizations during the night. This area is a quiet village called Napoopoo and there are no stoplights, stores, or crowds. All shopping and dining are located up the hill 4 miles in Kealakekua, Capt. Cook, or the other local villages of Kealakekua or Kainaliu town.
This home has been in the family since 1979. The Ohana was built for our Uncle has been used by family and friends ever since. I live in rural Northern California on our beef ranch. My son and his family also live on the ranch. I am a retired Hospice Nurse and now that I have time, I split my time between Hawaii and home. And enjoy spending 3-4 months a year in the Ohana alone or with friends. I would like others to share this experience. I manage this property for my half brother and half sister and the trust since my step-mother's death.
Marilyn Azevedo purchased this apartment in 1979
This ohana is so very close to Kealakekua Bay that we spend most days while there snorkeling or swimming. The water is warm as are the local people which make special days and a unique true Hawaiian experience. You will love the old time feel of the Bay and quiet days away from the city. Exploring the small towns at the top of the hill give you a look at old Hawaii.
This Ohana is in a perfect location. The comfortable personal touches inside this little home make it easy to relax. The proximity of the Bay make this Ohana special. There is also a cot that is available for a child or extra visitor.
thank you for sharing your lovely little home with us. It was picked and spin and well-equipped. I have to agree with the writer of previously the neighbors upstairs were quiet and pleasant. It was a pleasant retreat.
It is the most wonderful location you can ask for. However what is not clear is that the couple that lives above has a family that comes to the house daily they are not a quiet retired couple. We met the brother, daughter, friends, grand- son and it is an action filled household. And they wake up very early in the morning. So we had to adjust to a 6 AM wake up every day. But if you can tolerate the noise they are all very nice people. The Ohona kitchen has everything you need to cook all dinners at home. We loved being able to walk to the bay every morning really such a precious place.
If you are looking for quiet, relaxation, or privacy, do not stay here. This place is not really appropriate to be a vacation rental. The full-time renters living in the upstairs unit are not only noisy, but their place seems to be a gathering spot for their family and the local community. The first night they had a gathering in the driveway (the driveway is your view from the Ohana living room) and we had to draw the curtains for privacy. We were also woken by a crying baby at 7 am on a Sunday morning. The walls are very thin and we were also woken up by someone upstairs getting sick each night for the three nights we were there. The vacation Ohana is okay for location but lacks charm, mainly due to the views of a messy garage from the kitchen and the storage space view from the bathroom.
Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the owners lack of response to our concerns. I expect a response when things are misrepresented in print and I have a certain expectation of experience based on that representation. I think if the price were half of what it is listed at currently, it would seem more appropriate for what you are actually getting.
Just a two minutes footwalk away from Manini Beach Park, this wonderful location gives you the opportunity of staying in an area wih easy Bay access and features a wonderful garden- and out-of-the-window-view of the Kealakekua Bay coastline. It features a small, but nonetheless well-furnished kitchen, a full bathroom with tub and a separate sitting room, in addition to the bedroom, where you will be awakening to the sound of the tropical birds. And most wonderfully, this area is free from Koki-Koki-frogs.
A place that one can be grateful to call home- if only for a short while. I will be happy to return and would gladly recommend this property to friends and relatives, especially as the owner was helpful and appreciative of any questions and wishes. This already started with the first e-mail after booking, when I was given really detailed descriptions of the most attractive beaches, as well as of dining places and places to see.
Sorry I am not a native speaker, but nonetheless I hope this review will benefit any new guests who feel attractet to Sweet Ohana, for it is really sweet and - to me - really Ohana! Mahalo nui loa for making it available for renting!
'A 'ohe mea 'imi a ka maka. (Nothing more for the eyes to search for. Everything one desires is in one's presence).
