Built in 1927, Robert Howden modeled his castle on his memory of native Scottish castles. The secrets of its history are here for you to discover. Howden Castle in its river setting and uniqueness makes it ideal for a vacation getaway. This completely furnished house is situated on a bend of the San Lorenzo River, with a few other homes and one block from down town Ben Lomond. Just bring the groceries and enjoy a fairy tale setting in the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains.' The location is on California Highway 9 in the charming town of Ben Lomond and just minutes from the quaint towns of Boulder Creek, Brookdale, and Felton. The Howden Castle is just a short walk away from full service market, antiques, library, coffee shops, nightly entertainment at restaurants, and nightclub.

Just minutes from Santa Cruz, local wineries, and golf courses or just hang loose and beach yourself next to the river or one can launch themselves from the dock, relax by the fish pond and admire the stone carvings on the castle exterior, read a book on one of the five balconies, put together a puzzle or play games. For the kid there's a new skate park, two city parks, and town pool. Our location offers convenient day-trips to Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and Monterey County coastlines Henry Cowell Park, Big Basin, Loch Lomond Reservoir, Roaring Camp railroad, Santa Cruz beaches, Boardwalk Amusement Park, Monterey Bay Aquarium, or drive over the hill to the many activities in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We had a great time renting this castle. The dungeon/bar is amazing and the perfect gathering place for close friends to have a great time. The rooms are all well-appointed, the views are fantastic, and the owner is friendly. We'll definitely try to stay here again.

We stayed here in January 2010. We loved it! !!! It's beautiful, super clean and lots and lots of space. We did lose power when the river flooded, which caused my son's school books to get damaged since the bottom floor (3 floors total) flooded. But from what I understand it hadn't rained that hard for 30 years. We highly recommend this vacation rental. It's a truly magnificent place. Lots and lots of details. Carvings, etchings, & paintings. Like it's out of a book... lots of history. The gentlemen who makes the reservations is super nice, and so is the staff who helped us with the flooding. I can't say enough about this wonderful vacation rental. We can't wait to go back. This will be a family tradition for us every few years. This place really is all they say and more. Love, love, love this place. Lots of wonderful memories.... Our children who were 9, 12, 12, & 15 at the time... they say it's the best place they have ever been.... They still talk about it. Enjoys yourself and make lots of memories.
